Consider the AK-74; it corrects the AK-47's accuracy & recoil shortcomings, while retaining the traditional AK virtues of ruggedness & reliability.

Well, exaggerating for effect, anyway. But, the M-16's lack of a gas piston means that its action is doused with hot, corrosive gas every time it's fired. And, its tight tolerances tend to make it intolerant (as it were) of grit.
