I don't think the vocal styles are really a fair comparison. When Barbara sang it, the keys were higher and intended for a rich soprano voice like hers, but when Betty sang it, they lowered it and made it a power belt role. Vocally, the role was completely different in each production.

Choreography is meant to be understood as soon as it happens. If you have to explain verbally what it's supposed to represent, it isn't effective.

Anyone is capable fill a theatre without a mic, it just takes training and experience that most people don't bother to get anymore. Before the 1960's, musical theatre wasn't miced at all.
