Strongly agree with you, Rogue Linguist. My son has a lot of the behaviors, but also has empathy and much more social consciousness that other kids his age.

So true! But please know that if adoption does turn out to be the way you eventually build your family, it isn't 2nd best- and when you have your children, the pain of infertility goes away. You become a mommy to your child, and how they came to you becomes unimportant.
