ShoeShine was born on the West Side of Detroit on October 06, 1983. He began rapping at the age of 16, experimenting with free-styling with his friends and acquaintances. ShoeShine grew up on Schoolcraft and attended Catholic School in his formative years. It was there he first experienced the difficulties of being different, however, his shiny ways, charming demeanor, and the support of his parents helped him to succeed and develop his distinct personality.
Shine began shining shoes at the age of 12, continuing the legacy he inherited from him father, and his grandfather before him. It is through this venue that he comes in contact with so many different people of various persuasions, another large influence on his music. His steadfast presence at the DTW Metropolitan Airport for over 13 years, along with his cultivated penchant for conversation and verbalism, has lead to his popularity and helped him make a name for himself.
It was in 1999 that ShoeShines life was uprooted by a move from The D to Ypsilanti, MI. At 15 years old, Shine took a potentially traumatic situation: moving from The Hood to The Suburbs, and turned it into a positive thing. Indeed, one that would come to largely define his career. He began rapping as an outlet, and though he did not take it seriously yet, he nevertheless was developing his talent.
Shine began his entrepreneurial career with an international clothing line entitled Young & Company in 2003. This venture took him various places around the world, where his discovered his love of travel, commerce, and style, and began to recognize his desire to be an international figure. Shine decided to take his keen and prolific business sense, and launch it into a music career. He founded Textile Entertainment in 2004, named for the Ypsilanti street he learned to call home, and came to represent. He is also the C.E.O. of S.O.D.A., Shine Or Die Association.
ShoeShine represented and focused on several various artists from his label before deciding it was time the world heard what he had to say, as well. His style is a blend as diverse as his experiences, which spans his childhood in Detroit, to his love of Shanghai, and his loyalty to Textile. Shines music reflects all of these things, mixing hard, driving Michigan beats, with lyrics slightly different than anything anyone else has yet had to say. His music is about shining, a concept that any and everything can be attained through confidence in oneself. It is the belief that though sometimes it is necessary to establish ones status as someone to be respected, it is possible to make something of yourself and find pleasure and satisfaction in life without resorting to crime. This is the central message that ShoeShine conveys. His very name represents taking an occupation of service, and indeed, any occupation, and turning it into something beautiful, substantial, and fulfilling. As long as you do the best you can do, sustain a good work ethic, and stand for something positive, you too can Shine, as ShoeShine does through his music.
