Music Censorship
On March 23, 2004, a 12-year-old boy named Neil Kirkpatrick was expelled from his private school for listening to bands such as Korn and Rage Against The Machine. His parents weren't made aware of the expulsion until after the decision was made. Is this the future we want for our kids: the fear of getting fired from a job or kicked out of a church or group because of the music we listen to? Music censorship has been around for as long as music has been around. The fear of citizens revolting because of a song exposing a kingdom to the fear of children being exposed to inappropriate lyrics has always been more important than letting musicians express themselves as they choose.
It has been argued for a very long time whether or not censoring music goes against the first amendment. It is always agreed that since the music is owned by a record label instead of a government business that the censorship is okay. How many excuses like this one will it take until America is not unlike some foreign countries where musicians are killed because of the content of their songs? It seems extreme, but it isn't impossible. Some schools already search the lockers of fans of artists such as Marilyn Manson, Slipknot and Lamb of God. History has shown us that after a long enough period of time, a government will do anything to avoid rebellion. Who's to say that our government is any different?
