The main reason why he can't be heard that clearly in this recording is because he isn't singing out to the audience. You'll notice that he is looking down into his music whilst singing, which means that a lot of the sound will be absorbed by the pages in the book and about 6 foot infront of him...

You have described (either accurately or inaccurately) the neural process involved in enabling a singer to sing, which logically thought through the process works the same way for all singers, not just tenors... so what exactly is your point?

Fabulous, Plácido Domingo is by far the best singer that sings this particular song. I have sung songs myself where emotion has prevailed and you are forced to temporarily stop singing, so I can fully understand what happened there and why.
