For anyone interested this turned out to be a case of warm out rubber bushings on the dog bone (torque strut). Fix was a replacement unit from the parts store for about $20.

I owned an '87 bonneville - handsome car, good fuel economy, and good power for the time. Very reliable engines (3.8L V6) that later became known as the 3800 Series II and III.. constantly made Ward's best engines lists. Those engines run forever.
