Octavio Sanchez, Marine A person I believe to be a survivor is Octavio Sanchez, a marine that served his country greatly. He was a marine that was driving back towards Balad Air Base in Iraq on April 29, 2005, when they, overcame a roadside bomb. A roadside bomb is a bomb that is intended for destroying vehicles. That bomb did what it was intended for and more. So then was the explosion that changed Octavio's life forever. Well, it all started after they had gotten a call to go back to the base. Once they had taken off for the base, they had approached a roadside bomb, without knowing what it was there, and before they knew it, the explosion went off, Octavio noticed his comrades were dead, also when he got out of the vehicle he was on fire then put out, by nearby allies. He then quickly reached for a rifle because he heard gunfire, but trying to shoot he realized his hands were a gooey green color. Octavio was taken by plane to Brook Army Medical Center when they figured out that 70 percent of his body burned and a fractured left hand. Octavio had not realized what was going on while first arriving at Brook Army Medical Center. It wasn't until two years later that Octavio was able to leave Brook Army Medical Center, due to all of his injuries from the explosion. After leaving the medical center, Octavio had to go through two years of physical therapy to learn how to use his limbs again. The day Octavio signed up to become a marine and serve our country he was weighing 250lbs, soon after the explosion and recovery he weighed 150lbs. After four years of treatments, Octavio was in need of financial assistance. The corporation that helped him out was December Five, they helped him get into a home, pay his bills, and get him back on his feet. Octavio is inspirational because most of the time that person will give up in life and commit suicide. Octavio was a different story. He fought through his difficult time and refused to give up. He came over all the obstacles that came is way no matter how hard or painful the challenge was. He inspires others by telling his story and by not giving up on life. He can also inspire some injured veterans to just strive for life and have others know about your story. What Octavio learned from this incident is that life is not over just because of something very tragic, and that it is over when it's over. He was changed by knowing that his life is not over and you can still live your life happily. I believe he appreciates life more than he used to because if that were to happen to me then I would. To this day he has not given up on life and just strives for it. That is why the person I believe to be a survivor is Octavio Sanchez; The Marine.
