God Bless You, Howard Ashman is a feature-length documentary on the life and work of the critically acclaimed and award winning lyricist, director, and producer. Ashman wrote the book and lyrics for Little Shop of Horrors (LSOH), Smile, and he produced and wrote lyrics for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin before dying of complications from AIDS in 1991 at the age of forty. The intent is to create an intimate portrait of Howards life, an exploration of his challenges and struggles that reveals the enduring strength of his work and the redemptive power of the creative process.
God Bless You, Howard Ashman will feature imaginative visuals, high profile interviews, and incredible musical performances of classic songs that are widely known and loved. Ashmans life was a beautiful, tragic, and inspiring testament to the human spirit, and using raw, verité style, the film will capture the humanity of the person behind the magical work, the true stories behind the fantastical scenes, and the delicate but eternal nature of creative genius.
