Lionel in their 2011 Signature Edition Catalog has the DD35A engines. They're just a touch shorter in length than the DD40X (22" vs. aprox 24 5/8") They have the UP (6-28311), Pennsylvania (6-38498), the Milwaukee Road (6-34650) & the Southern Pacific (6-38496). Hope this will help you.

I just got the Lionmaster Challenger # 3985 with that same metal rod. It is used to remove the nuts that hold the drive rod onto the wheels. You need that tool when you need to change the traction tire(s). If you look at the tool the one end looks like a HEX head. Hope this helps you.

Those engines are really "AWESOME". I had a Lionel engine from a year or so ago. Smooth running engine at slow speeds even in Conventional Control. Great sound system and really nice detail. Lionel is making some really nice engines.
