About this user

17percent is a new organisation to support and promote female playwrights. We'll do this through networking events, courses, showcases with opportunities for feedback and development. Our events are not for women only, though the training opportunities will be focussed on women, as there is an imbalance that needs to be addressed. But we believe that to achieve equality, women and men should work together: in a conversation not a competition.

And why 17%? It's a significant figure; it was quoted at Sphinx theatre's 2009 'Vamps, Vixens and feminists' conference as the percentage of UK women playwrights being produced and it's also the pay gap between men and women. When only 17% of UK produced plays are written by women, when women make up 52% of the UK's population, and 65% of the theatre audience, something is badly skewed.

The key aim of 17percent is to widen the debate and include the relevant organisations, agencies and bodies. The theatre industry should be made aware of the business, social, ethical and legal reasons why more plays by women should be performed in the UK, and the benefits it would bring.

We will redress the balance by providing women with opportunities to develop as writers, through peer-to-peer networking and educational opportunities, championing women's achievements in the theatre, promoting female writers and providing positive female role models and inspirations. We kicked off our events schedule with two successful and invigorating discussion and showcase events on 11 and 12 March 2010.
