I think he was asking Chad simply bc he had spent time at the Lopez-Fitzgerald household and might know what friends Miguel, Luis, or Theresa had before they got involved. He did see all the kids at the book cafe a lot so maybe he assumed he could pick someone out who hung around the kids.
