Actually Handel had some brilliant Italian divas at his disposal - astonishing for the English audience of the day. But the first performance of this piece was by the excellent English tenor John Beard.
Julie Andrews didn't have the technique to cope with classical music at a professional level.

What an utterly stupid and dreary production. I admire how these fine performers put up with everything and still produce great music despite every attempt by the director to ruin the opera.
A horrible incident. Most white British people, like me, are not racist. There is a high level of friendship and inter-marriage between white people and other groups in Britain. We must not be too upset by a few racist nutters.
