LANI HALL - MAGIC GARDEN
from album "DOUBLE OR NOTHING" (1979)

featuring Neil Larsen and Buzzy Feiten (who also wrote the song). I can hear them doing it themselves - I think it would've sounded a lot better. No offense to Lani - this is just so Larsen/Feiten it isn't funny, and I can hear Buzzy singing it in my head.
"Hip Hug-Her" - Neil Larsen (1987)

Neil Larsen Alborada
Neil Larsen born Aug 7, 1948 in Cleveland, OH. 1987 gem from the great keyboard player Neil Larsen. "Alborada from "Through Any Window".

I wish he'd played his B-3 on this. This is a rather cheesy synthesizer. But it's a great melody anyway. God, this man has a way with a melody.

The original is also by Neil Larsen but off the Jungle Fever album from 1978, available only as a Japanese import from Universal - it just was re-released as a lower-priced option back in January at about $20.

That's "PARA Los Latinos." Bobby Lyle on keys, Steve Gutierrez on drums, Willie Bobo on timbales, Vance Tenort on congas and percussion, Donnie Beck on bass. I've always liked this for the interplay of the guitar and organ; a very energetic feel to the whole thing. Much better than the rest of...

Good lord, who hasn't sampled this? That drum line by John Guerin is instantly recognizable no matter who uses it.

Rhythm Heritage's version is better but still sounds like a product of the late '70s. Oh, my, these synthesizers are so incredibly dated! I would've loved to have heard Victor Feldman (who wrote it) do a version of this in a more pop vein, but he only did a straight jazz version.

Victor Feldman wrote it and played the synthesizer, which sounds a little cheesy today. Michael Omartian on the other keys, Scott Edwards on bass, Jay Graydon on guitar, and the inimitable Ed Greene on drums. And yes, that's Ernie Watts on sax. Amazing how his sound doesn't sound like Sanborn ...

There's something about the clothes in this video that just makes me laugh my butt off. And that keyboard player is a very young David Benoit, believe it or not.

Read the liner notes from the CD reissues from 2001 (?) or so where Donald and Walter discuss it. As I recall it starts somewhere in the notes for Pretzel Logic and ends somewhere in Katy Lied, and they discuss how all the studio cats could add so much to the music, keyboard players too. They b...

Yeah, you're right - that is Barry Finnerty with his hair permed. This sounds really different from the version on "Scratch." Interesting that it's a Wayne Henderson composition and they're still playing it well after he had left the group. It really needs that trombone in the melody to make i...

Wilton Felder also played bass most of the time. Doubled on the sax parts too. Unclear as to what tracks Chuck Rainey played bass on. Arthur Adams played rhythm guitar (it doesn't sound like David T. Walker) and Larry Carlton played lead.

Joe Sample's "My Mama Told Me So." A very spare arrangement but it sounds great like this. Hearing Larry doing all the melody alone is awesome. I'd love to hear him do this on an album. Travis's funk work back there is great too, and the shuffle groove by Gene is different from Stix's work. ...

Oh, no, it's the Dan. It was recorded as part of Can't Buy a Thrill but never made it. That's the Skunk on steel and Jim Hodder singing and playing drums. Poco did a version of it on one of their albums. I prefer the Dan's version. This one here, not so much.

I wouldn't be so quick to judge. Homosexual men usually think women's parts are pretty gross. While I am glad I feel otherwise - and feel that men's parts are pretty gross - I'm not going to make snap judgments on a group of people who feel otherwise directed. The whole lot of them probably fe...

This is the extended version on Polydor 12" which is most often found with a version of "Turn It On (live)" on the other side. The A&M US 12" remix and dub versions are different and clock in around 7:08 and 7:30.
Nope, missing from "Can't Buy a Thrill" and released before the album as a promo-only single on ABC. Neat little find if you can dig it up.
