About Me:
I struggled with meaning deafness, meaning blindness, faceblindness, difficulty processing my body messages and struggled to hold a simultaneous sense of self and other. I acquired functional speech by late childhood (I was echolalic before that). I was diagnosed with Atypical Epilepsy after fugues in my 20s, then diagnosed with Autism a year later. In my 30s I was treated for PTSD and had treatment for mood, anxiety and compulsive disorders. In my 40s I was diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder and began the road to integration.
Coming from a very challenged family in which abuse, violence, crime and substance abuse was common, I left high school for homelessness as someone innumerate with literacy problems. With the help of a psychiatrist, however, I returned to school, gained a degree in linguistics, a postgraduate degree in sociology and became a qualified teacher and began to escape a life of 'domestic prostitution'.
I became a published author of ten books including two international bestsellers (Nobody Nowhere, Somebody Somewhere), four text books in the field of autism and two books of poetry and art. I became a painter and sculptor, selling my art internationally and singer-songwriter, produced 3 albums, formed a band called Donna and The Aspinauts, and wrote and performed rock musicals. I became a screenwriter with my first screenplay (Nobody Nowhere) now in active development as a future cinema feature film.
I speak several languages (Italian, German, French). I love to 'dag', be happy, silly, to skip and dance about like a fool. I don't consider interpretive language my first language but I'm glad I've acquired it. I see myself as an animal which happens to be human.
I'm a Taoist, a humanist, an atheist. I'm pretty easy going but really don't like petty judgmental rubbish. The world has enough hate without adding to it and we're destroying the natural world so why destroy each others souls too. I'm into diversity and equality and beingness.
I developed breast cancer in 2011 and underwent mastectomy and chemotherapy.
I lived in Australia with my wonderful techie husband, Chris Samuel and consider friends the family we choose for ourselves.
