I had the great honor/pleasure to sing with Jimmy at my late teacher's (Walter Cassel) memorial concert at IU in 2000. He sang a beautiful farewell and I led the standing ovation - he deserved it for the singing and for his magnificent career. He paid me a wonderful compliment - "Boy, I hope yo...

I love this opera - I did "Daniel Webster" in two different productions with the Chicago Opera Theater - the first was on National Educational Television. Virgil wrote a nice remembrance in my score. Parts of this opera haunt me - some pieces just touch you that way. Thanks for posting this.

Beautiful voices, both of them, but in my opinion hardly what one might expect for Verdi - voices just aren't quite Capuccilli/Bergonzi; Bjoerling/Merrill; MacNeil and Tucker. I wish I could hear them in the Pearlfishers as well - it would fit their lyric voices much better than this.

It's Milnes - take it to the bank. Early in his career to be sure, but it IS Sherrill Milnes, and it's beautifully sung. Just my opinion, and I know many, many will disagree, but this and Donizetti and Mozart is where he should have stayed.

I love this - in no small part because Walter Cassel was my teacher and I knew him very, very well. But the tempi used by Leonard Bernstein are just plain odd. In some cases the singers have trouble staying with him. Wonder what he was trying to do and what his source was. Thanks for posting ...
There have been no baritones since who could handle this role and do it the justice that Tibbett does - that includes London, who recorded the aria, or Milnes, or Terfel or Morris or anyone. This is, by today's standards, politically incorrect - but it's absolutely stunning. They don't make 'em...
