Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born in Brookyln, New York on January 16, 1979, and raised in Detroit Michigan. Aaliyah got her first big break, at the age of 11 singing "My Funny Valentine" on Star Search. At the age of 12, she was introduced to RNB artist writer/producer phenomenon R.Kelly, who would eventually become her mentor. Aaliyah went on to record her first album, "Age Aint Nothing But A Number" with hits such as "Back And Forth," and "At Your Best". Aaliyah quickly became known for her soulful, but yet street edge, girl-next-door appeal, and her mysterious and alluring beauty. "Age Aint Nothing But A Number," went on to sell 3 million copies. On Aaliyah's second project, she chose to work with up-and-coming producers Missy Elliot, and Timbaland in 1996. These producers gave her a diffrent, but more edgy sound that was something very new in the music world. It was in this era that she picked up the name "Baby Girl" given to her by Timbaland. She also opted for a more sexy image, and wore her hair over one eye, which became her signature trademark. "One In A Million" went on to sell 3 million copies in the U.S., and 8 million worldwide. Aaliyah also went on to star in major motion films, as well as releasing songs to its soundtracks. Her most known soundtrack songs are "Are You That Somebody" from the Dr. Dolittle Soundtrack (1998), and "Try Again" from Romeo Must Die" starring opposite Jet Li, which earned her a Grammy Nomination for Best Female RNB Artist in 2000. Her last studio album, was simply intitled "Aaliyah"(2001) . On this highly-anticipated album, she worked with Timbaland and also new and upcoming producers, such as Static from the group Playa, and Sean Garett, who is now a huge producer today. "We Need A Resolution" was its first hit single. Its video was full of "eye candy" as Aaliyah so sweetly described it. This was the new and beautiful Aaliyah. She sported a grown sexy and more mature look. Aaliyah had finally arrived in personal, proffesional and artistic growth, and was set to show the world just who she really was. " My mother always said I had sex appeal. Even when I was very young, when i would take pictures, there was something sexual about me. I do feel sexy for sure. I enjoy it." She told Vibe Magazine in 2001.For the taping of her "Rock The Boat" video she chose to film in The Bahamas.The taping of the video, was a long and exhausting process, but the end results were absolutely breathtaking. She danced on a beautiful white boat, with her dancers, and shot a underwater scene, where she was reminiscent of an angel, floating upward to heaven. Tired and ready to go back home to her New York Apartment, where her mom, family and friends were waiting for her arrival, she boarded a small Cesna plane, with her bodyguard and close crew. Aaliyah would not make it back home this time, but to a better home for our beloved "Angel On Earth." Aaliyah was only 22 years old, when she died in a tragic plane crash. At her funeral, a white dove representing each year of her life was released into the sky, while her Mother looked on. Aaliyah Dana Haughton ( January 16th, 1979- August 25th, 2001) will never be forgotten. For her final studio album realease, "I Care For You" Rapper DMX, along with a host of other celebrities and entertainers, gave her a heartfelt and emotional tribute for the video of "I Miss You." DMX said: " I can see why GOD wanted you closer to him, because you were truly an angel on earth. Her co-star from "Romeo Must Die" Isaiah Washington said: "People die everyday but I'm confused with God on this one. Obviously, He has a higher plan for her, and I'm sure she will fulfill it." Aaliyah has sold and estimated 32 million records worldwide, with dedicated fans across the world. At her young age Aaliyah had already became a world-class entertainer. She said in an interview " I have no regrets. I've lived a full life, at 21 I've done alot in just 21 years, I'm very happy." Aaliyah we love and miss you so much, there are no words imaginable. She will always be remembered for her physical and internal beauty, kindness, generosity, warmness to others, sense of humor, and her unforgettable smile and laughter.
