I think it's largely to do with the evolution of historical performance, and players trying harder and harder to sound authentic - in the 1930s, people knew much less about bach, and so played it romantically, just as they would play brahms or mendelssohn, with lots of portamento etc. I think mod...

The reason they sound fantastic is because he rehearsed them well. His style is excellent, and highly praised by many orchestral players for its fluidity, and because he doesn't get in the way of their playing.
