Merlin's magic is corrupting him as he becomes addicted to it. The need for more drives him to the brink of darkness and when Uther orders the execution of Gaius the fine line between good and evil is broken and Camelot suffers the full wrath of Dark Merlin.

Falling in love with the Master as a human isn't something the Doctor planned but it happened.
And when he became full Time Lord again the Doctor, in selfish desperation decides to trick the Master into becoming human again, with promises that it will finally silence the drumming.
It was a lie. As a human he still hears them and finds himself dreaming of the fob watch.
Hurt and betrayed he opens the watch to take revenge on the Doctor, the man who betrayed him for his own selfish reasons.
