In 1974, the Endorois community of Kenya's Rift Valley was evicted from their land by the Kenyan government to make way for a game reserve and tourist resort. From generation to generation, the community continues to struggle for reparation for their loss and restitution to their land. Their efforts have been met by successive Kenyan governments with denial, harassment, and further eviction—this time to make way for mineral mining. Today, the Endorois have taken their claim to the highest regional human rights body, the African Commission on Human and People's Rights, demanding recognition as a distinct indigenous group and asserting their basic human rights. Through the personal stories of community members, Rightful Place tells the impact of displacement on individual, identity, and community, and of the struggle of the Endorois to reclaim their rightful place.
Modern-day slavery is a shocking reality: every year in Brazil, landowners, mostly in the Amazon region, enslave more than 25,000 rural workers. Men in search of work are taken to isolated ranches, only to discover they have been lured into debt bondage. Forced to do backbreaking work and to live in overcrowded shacks with no running water, they are treated like animals. "A bullet from my shotgun is what you have a right to here," one worker was told. With no way out, they toil in the hope of buying back their freedom.
Since 1995, the Brazilian Ministry of Labor has operated the Mobile Inspection Squad to investigate the claims of runaway workers. Every year, nearly 250 complaints are filed, involving nearly 8,000 workers.
In 2003, Brazil launched the National Plan to Eradicate Slave Labor, committing to end slave labor within four years. That same year, the Ministry of Labor created a "List of Shame" that publicizes the names of offending landowners. Since then, inspections have increased substantially, releasing over 4,000 workers a year. Yet half of the claims remain uninvestigated. While offending landowners have been sentenced to pay fines for moral damages, few have been criminally charged. Cases have stalled due to a controversy over whether they should be tried in federal or state courts. As a result, impunity is rampant and no landowner has ever been imprisoned for slave labor.
From http://www.witness.org | This five-part "How to Film Protests" series incorporates the best practices WITNESS has developed with over 300 partners in 80 countries who are using video for human rights documentation and to create lasting change.
From raw documentation of human rights violations in Syria to the Occupy protests and the range of police abuse and misconduct therein, citizen video is an increasingly powerful tool for human rights documentation.
Now more than ever we need to ensure that the footage that we capture as activists incorporates essential information like the exact date, time and location so it may best be used by the media, as evidence, and for advocacy. Additionally, we need to pay special attention to the unique safety and security risks that we face as filmmakers and activists, as well as risks to those we capture in our footage.
--- How-to Film Safely and Effectively for Human Rights ---
This video series is broken into small, two-minute videos, and focuses on how to best prepare to film, choose and test your equipment, get good footage, film as part of a team and conduct interviews.
Whether you're filming the May 1st Occupy Wall Street protests and events or just want to be prepared to best use your camera phone if you are in the wrong place at the right time, watch these how-to videos to be best prepared to capture good footage that will be engaging, informative and can be used for potential advocacy and evidentiary use.
We are excited to share these tips in video and text. Let us know how they are useful for you, and what you would add to make them even better by adding comments to the videos or at http://blog.witness.org
