Symbols are important, but they don't fully reflect all the hard work that goes into a peace process. Beyond doves and ribbons, peace is a demanding job for over 100,000 United Nations Peacekeepers.

The first UN peacekeeping mission hails back to 1948. UN military observers were deployed to monitor the Armistice Agreement b/w Israel and its Arab neighbors. Since then, the Blue Helmets have been a driving force behind protecting civilians and resolving conflicts around the world. Guatemala, Namibia, Cambodia-- UN Peacekeepers go to places others simply can't or won't go.

This is what peace really is. It's 60 years of creating chances for peace to blossom. 60 years of overseeing elections and disarming ex-combatants. 60 years of proving that peace, like war, must be waged.

It's interesting that people will risk their lives, and take searing criticism, just for another country's peace and security.
Truly these men and women are some of the most selfless people on earth.
someday I hope more will appreciate their sacrifice.

What an excellent capsule of the amazing work the UN and its member nations do all around the world. Of course, we all have so much more left to do!

I have worked for a United Nations agency in Geneva, and I know many, many people who have toiled diligently on behalf of the forgotten masses of humanity.

Sure, there are problems with the U.N., just as there are with General Motors and General Electric, but the basic idea behind all of these international organizations is certainly a sound one.

It's a bureaucracy, but it is a bureaucracy with a positive mission that we should all support.

Sincerely,

A real person who knows what he is talking about.
