It was an SCCA sanctioned rally cross, so yes it was private land. The owner helped organize the event.

I just bought some crappy mic from best buy. As long as it is external you can play with mic setups. You may need an extender cable, but any external mic for your camera will do.

You should pick up a lipstick style camera. You wont fear camera mount failures, especially during rallycross.
