ITV News was re-launched on Monday 2 November 2009, as part of a major brand re-alignment intended to bring network bulletins on ITV1 into line with the overall branding of the channel.
The main creative concept was built around the notion of 'Vivid and Visual' - two elements which the network identified in its core output but which it didn't feel were necessarily reflected in its news programming. The 2009 changes were aimed at rectifying this by providing more cohesion across the entire ITV1 schedule, and encouraging audiences to associate ITV News more directly with ITV1 itself. The network was also keen to create a strong brand for its news output, in response to the branding exercise undertaken by BBC News in 2008.
The opening title sequence (the short sting is included here) was designed by Bruce Dunlop Associates who also created the new studio set. Market research undertaken by ITV suggested that previous opening titles and set design (featuring the Big Ben clock face and panoramic view of the London skyline) were seen as being too London-centric by audiences outside the capital. As a result, the famous clock face features less prominently in the new look, although the Big Ben bongs have been retained to punctuate the opening headlines.
Other graphics such as animated title boards, panels and astons were produced in-house by the Graphics Department at ITN led by Kojo Boateng working in close partnership with colleagues at BDA and the marketing team at ITV. The new theme music (called 'News Centre') is essentially a new composition, although key elements of Johnny Pearson's classic 'News at Ten' theme ('The Awakening') have been retained. The version presented here is a special extended remix exclusive to this video.
This selection of clips includes highlights from the launch week, and is designed to showcase the new look - specifically the opening titles, graphics and how the new studio set is used. I've also tried to give a flavour of the stories covered during the first week, which demonstrates the breadth of ITV News coverage and the scale of its ambition together with the expertise of its presentation team and correspondents.
The weeks news was dominated by events in Afghanistan, following the murder of 5 British soldiers by an Afghan police trainee in Helmand on Tuesday. ITV News correspondents Bill Neely and John Ray provided live reports into bulletins from Kabul and Helmand, while Chris Ship offered expert analysis of the political fallout at home. Meanwhile, news of the massacre at the Fort Hood army base in Texas on Thursday, broke while News at Ten was on air, and John Irvine provided a live update during the bulletin followed by packaged reports and further lives across the weekend.
Other stories making the news during the first week included the falling number of organ transplant donors, a court case over the future a severely disabled child (Baby RB), the birth of footballer Wayne Rooney's son (Kai), a young girl's campaign for specialist medical treatment in America (Sophie Atay) and the 40th anniversary of 'Sesame Street'.
