Videos from author and educator Tim Grey covering digital photography and imaging.
About Me:

Tim Grey is regarded as one of the top educators in digital photography and imaging, offering clear guidance on complex subjects through his writing and speaking. He loves learning as much as he possibly can about digital imaging, and he loves sharing that information even more.

Tims work combines several of his greatest passions: technology, teaching, photography, writing, and travel. All of these have been part of his life in some way for as long as he can remember, and became a major focus starting in high school. He has been focused on digital photography and imaging for over 10 years.

Tim has written more than a dozen books on digital imaging for photographers, including the best-selling Photoshop CS4 Workflow and Take Your Best Shot. He has also had hundreds of articles published in magazines such as Digital Photo Pro, Outdoor Photographer, and PC Photo, among others. He publishes the Digital Darkroom Questions email newsletter, as well as the Digital Darkroom Quarterly print newsletter. Tim teaches through workshops, seminars, and appearances at major events. He is a member of the Photoshop World Dream Team of Instructors.

Hi Tim,

I attended your program last year at NECCC in Amherst, MA. Well done, easy to understand and thank you for the videos.

In response to sirius92119, the basic answer is that you need to very carefully create a selection that defines the sky (including all the gaps between the leaves and branches in the tree) and use that as the basis of the layer mask. You'll still need to fine-tune that mask by blurring it slightly (the Feather slider on the Masks panel in Photoshop CS4 is great for this) as well as fine-tuning the position of the mask (via the Contract/Expand slider in the Refine Edge dialog box). Of course, in many cases you'll still need to fine-tune your mask by painting on it with a very small brush using a soft-edge to blend the new sky carefully into the new image. I'll be covering this in more detail in upcoming videos.

How do you replace the sky in images that have trees with the "bad" sky visible through the branches and around the leaves?

Thank you for this excellent video.

Very nice. Thank you for the video. Your videos seem to have the read speed and details for following and understanding. I have seen other video tutorials were I simply get lost because of the pace the video jumps between menu items and tools without giving the person watching a chance to grasp what was going on.

Ditto the above comments! Video tutorials--The Best yet! I have pages and pages of cut and paste but now, the videos will mean instant access to what I need to know right now! Still, I love those hard copies. Thank you Tim for all your generous efforts.

If Tim Grey has done then it has got to be good. I enjoy the books, the articles, the lectures and workshops, and the DDQ's and I know I will enjoy this as well. Another great idea from Tim Grey.
