For theremin lesson videos, click the THEREMIN LESSONS playlist, and enjoy learning how to play the theremin as well as learning about the history, and manufacturing of theremins.

Theremin lessons are also available at Fondren Guitars In Jackson Mississippi for $80 dollars for 4 half hour session / month.

For Campanology, change ringing, carillons, and tubular bell ringing, click on "playlists", and then "change ringing campanology".

I play the theremin in the classical style, but I also enjoy experimenting with jazz, easy listening, and other forms of theremin playing.

ABOUT THEREMINS and WHERE TO FIND THEM
Thremins are electronic musical instruments which are played without being touched.

They can be built, or adapted for left-handed, or right-handed musicians.

Theremins consist of a wooden, plastic, or metal box which has a vertical antenna (fixed capacitence plate) on one side, and a loop, or hook like antenna on the other end of the cabinet. The vertical rod antenna is for controlling the pitch of the notes, while the loop antenna (mounted horizontally) is used for controlling expressive dynamics, and phrasing of musical passages.

Inside the cabinet is one, or more electronic circuit boards, on which are components which produce electronic tone, and the invisible field of energy around the antennas.

The tone generating circuit consists of a pair of beat frequency oscilators, one of which is set at a given or fixed frequency at or near 200 kHz (200,000 beats per second), which is inaudible, while the second BFO is variable, and is set to just a few beats fewer, or greater than the fixed BFO. The combination of these two UHF (inaudible frequencies) produces the audible tone we hear. This process is called heterodyning (differing energies).

The variable oscilator is controlled by the field around the vertical rod (pitch antenna).

The dynamics are controlled by a circuit which works in a simalar manner as the pitch side circuit. This curcuit uses the volume loop, and also has BFOs to facilitate control over dynamics.

The audible tone is then routed out to a sound system, amp, or recording device.

Theremins were invented by Leon Theremin, who in 1925, was granted his patent for the instrument after applying for the patent in 1919. He discovered the principals which we now call "theremin effect" accidentally when he moved his hand too close to a radio tube, and noticed a high shrill. Being a musician, he quickly realized the potential for this variable shrill to become a musical instrument with the right amplification, and control.

He later developed theremins for use as control, and detection devices for the New York prison system, as well as amusing control circuits for such things as motorized cake platters, and such which moved when you got close enough to them.

Theremins were later used in music starting in the late mid, to late 1920s, when he demonstrated the instrument in public, as well as being used by such musical masters as Clara Rockmore at about the same time.

After falling into obscurity for decades, they were later rediscovered by musicians like Samual Hoffman, and others. In the mid 20th century, they were used to produce mood altering music, and effects in horror, thriller, and science fiction films.

After falling into obscurity yet again for another decade or so, they were revisited by visionaries like Bob Moog, who produced small numbers of tube, and later transistor theremins in the 60s, and later went on to mass produce theremins as well as synthesizers throughout the 70s, 80s, 90s, and the first few years of the 21st century until his death in 2005. Bob Moog also invented the synthesizer.

Ever since the 90s, the theremin has been enjoying a return to the lime-light in movies, musical performances, and scientific research in the field of robotics.

For more information about theremins, please view the videos in my THEREMIN LESSONS playlist which contains 6 lessons by me, as well as other informative videos by other friends of the theremin throughout the world. Also, feel free to visit http://www.thereminworld.com and http://www.thereminvox.com for information, and forums where you'll meet other theremin enthusiasts, and professionals in both the musical, and manufacturing aspects of all things "theremin".
