The Open University (OU) is the United Kingdom's only university dedicated to distance learning.

We have around 150,000 undergraduate and more than 30,000 postgraduate students. 10,000 of our students have disabilities.
The Open University's style of teaching is called supported open learning.

Nearly all students are studying part-time. About 70 per cent of undergraduate students are in full-time employment. More than 50,000 students are sponsored by their employers for their studies.

Agree with all comments above. Due to work prseeures the O.U. kindly let me defer my studies for which I am most grateful. I am thinking of taking my family to the Rock Opera on 28th June to celebrate 40 years of the O.U.

The OU is a great national treasure.

Although highlighted as a 'gifted' student as a child, my fathers unexpected death and my mothers progressive illness put pay to any dreams I had of an education. It took me another 20 years before I was in a position of financial stability that allowed me to continue my education.

A traditional bricks and mortar uni would never have offered someone in my position the opportunity that the OU has, for that I will be eternally grateful.

'Bang Goes the Theory (BGTT) - new OU/BBC science show
5 videos
Bang Goes the Theory is a 10 part series of half hour, magazine-style, programmes that aim to discover and explain the scientific principles that shape our world. Studio filming will take place at an ex-MOD facility near Bedford and you can follow the transformation of this space from a derelict supersonic wind tunnel facility to a fully dressed 'set' and studio over the next few weeks.

The series will be supported by a programme website hosted on Open2.net, which is The Open Universitys public facing website. The planned elements of the web support are an interactive science challenge, a downloadable activity pack with easy science activities to do at home or in school and a number of interactive elements including a virtual planisphere (to look at the planets and stars) and geology toolkit to identify rocks. There will also be a series of videos documenting a behind the scenes look at the making of the series, plus extended video clips with academics explaining the science behind the show in more detail, all of which will be available on The Open University YouTube channel. Further learning, relating to topics in the programmes can be found on The Open University on iTunesU
