STEREO version guaranteed to have you snapping your toes! Stan Kenton was a pianist who led a highly innovative, influential, and often controversial American jazz orchestra. In 1941 he formed his first orchestra which later was named after his theme song "Artistry In Rhythm". Its soloists during the war years included Art Pepper, briefly Stan Getz, altoist Boots Mussulli, and singer Anita O'Day. Calling his music progressive jazz, Kenton sought to lead a concert orchestra as opposed to a dance band. His popular recording of "Laura", the theme song from the movie "Laura", featured the members of the band on vocals. He was a salient figure on the American musical scene and made an indelible mark on the arranged type of big band jazz. His albums "Adventures in Jazz" and "West Side Story" each won Grammy awards in 1962 and 1963. After his first recording in 1946 of "Intermission Riff" he became identified with this jazz classic. A later recording by Kenton of "Intermission Riff" became a jukebox mainstay during the early and mid 1950s. One of the bands I played with used an abbreviated version of this song before each of our breaks. This stereo re-recording is from his album "Live At Barstow 1960".

Formed in 1953, The Platters were one of the most successful singing groups of the 50s. Their first big hit was the classic "Only You" released in 1955 and was followed by a string of top 10 hits. Over the next decade they had a total of 26 top 40 hits and 6 songs reaching the #1 position. Notable memories include "The Great Pretender", "My Prayer", "Twilight Time", and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". Total records sales to date are in excess of 80 million, making them one of the most successful vocal recording groups ever. The Platters were the only act to have three songs included on the "American Graffiti" soundtrack. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Although almost all of their hits featured Tony Williams at lead, all 5 members were soloists in their own rights. This selection is from their album "Remember When" released in 1959 and features David Lynch on lead.
