Popup - Love Triangle teamlovevids - 194 views - 2 months ago
Popup live like wolves on the outskirts of popular culture, protecting a territory it would not make sense for others to invade. They arrive, like foxes, without invitation at the gates of towns and cities, hoping to be fed without fuss. They sing at times as an owl will to his prey, at times as a panda will to her reluctant mate. They are the sound of birds migrating, of natures irregular beat. They move like mans heart racing, as the blood drains to his feet.

McCarthy Trenching - The Most Attractive Disguise teamlovevids - 1,274 views - 9 months ago
Notes On McCarthy Trenchings Calamity Drenching:

A. McCarthy Trenching just bought a packet of cigarettes and a bottle of Old Overholt and came home to write this intro for the blurb on his new record (here we are). After having played a benefit concert for a little boy who was badly burned when he tipped a vegetable steamer over onto himself. After having made a promise to an old friend that no songs about horse racing would be played at the concert, on account of the cruelties of the sport, a promise which was broken.

McCarthy Trenchings latest songs tend to be centered around rejections: romantic ones, religious ones, rejections of high holidays and of higher education, the rejection that happens when a driver hits eject on her tape player and throws the cassette out the window. McCarthy Trenching is probably a couple deep right now.

B. McCarthy Trenching spent most of 2007 touring, with an extended opening slot on the Bright Eyes Cassadaga tour, a date here and there warming the stage with the likes of M. Ward, Victoria Williams, Jason Isbell, Mark Olson and even radio hit Peter, Bjorn & John. Then we came home for a bad Nebraska winter, spending most of our time shoveling snow and recording songs.

The result is Calamity Drenching, a collection of songs about horse racing, the romance of cassette tapes (and losing that particular romance), piano practice, religious doubt, inclement weather, and Bar-B-Q. And there is an accordion solo titled after a line from Carl Sandburgs poem Happiness. We think its a worthy follow-up to our self-titled Team Love release from last year it captures a more concentrated period of songwriting and recording, but contrary to what Detritus implies, we have not quit drinking.

C. Disappointment is rife, but solace is also to be found: in friendship, in music, in horse racing, and in cutting close to the bone in all endeavors.

D. Having lost faith in Catholicism and Romantic Love, what does one look to? Such unreliable sources as friends, music, beer, bar-b-que, and gambling. Not bad, right?

E. Calamity Drenching collaborators include: Steve Bartolomei (Mal Madrigal), Ben Brodin (Before the Toast and Tea), Stefanie Drootin (The Good Life, She & Him, Bright Eyes), Tim Jensen (The Golden Age), Pearl Lovejoy Boyd (Outlaw con Bandana), Ted Stevens (Cursive, Mayday), Orenda Fink (Azure Ray, Art in Manila) and Phillip Too-Tall Shaffart, who says Trench is Omahas best songwriter, no big deal.

F. McCarthy Trenching prefers to record at home, since there is so much snow-shoveling to do during the winter. All of the songs were recorded on 8-track tape machines, mostly in the living room, because thats where the piano is.

G. Dan McCarthys multi-instrumental talent can also be heard on Bright Eyes Cassadaga, Maria Taylors Lynn Teeter Flower, Cursives Happy Hollow, The Good Lifes Album of the Year, and Tilly and the Walls Bottoms of Barrels and o.

H. So far in 2008, McCarthy Trenching has circled the states once already with The Felice Brothers and Justin Townes Earle and plans to visit every nook and cranny with a two month tour this Fall covering 50 cities.

Editors Note:

Team Love would like to interject that they believe, despite Dans humble portrayal above, Calamity Drenching is a monumental follow-up to the self-titled Team Love release last year exploring the power of piano driven songs and weaving clever tales of rejection and disappointment - wrapped in the feeling of solitude one can only experience in the depths of a midwestern Winter.

TILLY AND THE WALL HAVE A NEW RECORD teamlovevids - 14,523 views - 1 year ago

It was only four years ago that Tilly and the Wall burst like a popping balloon onto the independent music scene. A potent combination of sing-song boy-girl vocals, acoustic guitars, keyboard accents and a tap dancer instead of a drummer, the Omaha-based five-piece sang songs about not wanting to grow up, losing your love to the road, the urge to force the night as far as you could take it and more. Their debut, Wild Like Children, was a revelation to anyone who's ever wanted to sing their hearts out like vocalists Neely Jenkins and Kianna Alarid; anyone who's ever wanted to pummel big chunky chords from their acoustic guitar or keyboards like vocalist/guitarist Derek Pressnall and keyboardist Nick White; anyone whose love of rhythm meant letting their bodies create the song's beat through motion like tap dancer Jamie Pressnall. Their follow-up, Bottoms of Barrels, pushed their sound one step forward, taking Tilly's signature point of view of "we" to new heights: they told us we didn't have to back down and close our eyes to go to sleep; we could shout for our freedom; we could wake up your mothers and start a commotion, and this youthful excitement would never ever stop. And then something changed. Kind of.

Tilly and the Wall decided it might be time to move that energy of declarative exuberance in another direction. After extensive tours of Europe, Australia, and Japan with the likes of CSS and Lightspeed Champion, in addition to their first time playing at the Reading/Leeds Festival, Coachella, and Summer Sonic, the band knew they had to open their heads and their hearts to all they were seeing, and use those experiences to the fullest. When they finally came back home, they went back to their old stomping grounds, artist-in-residence center The Bemis Center for the Contemporary Arts in Omaha, where they wrote Bottoms of Barrels, and began to work on what would become their most collaborative effort to date, each person throwing his or her songwriting hat in the ring more than they had previously. Drawing on everything from nature and magic to sex, rivalries and astrology, and featuring more instruments, voices and bodily percussion than their last two records put together, Tilly and the Wall have begun to forge a brand new musical path for themselves. One listen to their newest album, and you know it's a special journey indeed, one we are very thrilled to take with them.

The album, produced by the acclaimed Mike Mogis, has no title. It could be called "O," because its cover is just that: an oval-shaped frame for the artwork that will go inside of it. As a band who surround themselves not only with artistic friends, but also artistic fans, Tilly and the Wall have invited everyone in their community to contribute to the cover art for their record. O will have limited edition runs of handmade prints available by different artists that will act as the record's cover, giving the band's fans a unique piece of art for both their album and their walls. Each month, the record will have a different cover; or, of course, you could very well create your own. The frame of the cover art allows the listener to put him/herself into the album, and believe us: this is a record into which you'll want to pour yourself.

David Dondero - Rothko Chapel teamlovevids - 7,047 views - 1 year ago
From the acclaimed songwriting troubadour David Dondero comes Simple Love, the follow up to his critically lauded 2005 release, South of the South. Few songwriters have experienced and expressed the sinking depths and uplifting optimism of humanity like David Dondero, and his ability to shine a light on the human condition (his own included) is inspiring. Dondero is best known for his narrative tales of America. Having spent most of his life on the road, Dave uses his staggering lyrical talent to paint tales of life in the US of A through clever word play and sarcastic humor (as represented in the album title) about some of life's most sensitive subjects. Simple Love is a poignant collection of songs woven with sentimentality, contempt, humor, and lust.

Simple Love was recorded and produced by Mike Vasquez in Austin, TX at Sweatbox Studios immediately after the original Sweatbox was burned to the ground. Ringing in the new and celebrating the old, David recruited long-time friend Craig D, Dave's drummer and tour companion, as well as some of Austin's best local musicians to accompany him during the sessions. Recorded on tape with minimal overdubs, the record features many new songs and a handful of unreleased tracks.

Veering away from the acoustic folk arrangements of previous albums, Simple Love, broadens its instrumental library and tackles much darker subjects of loss, lost love and death. Dondero sings "Rothko Chapel" about a non-denominational church in Texas which has blank paintings by Mark Rothko, meant to evoke soul discovery, strung about the walls. Spending an interesting summer in Alaska ("The Prince William Sound"), escaping reality at a favorite spot ("Mighty Mississippi"), feeling "stuck" in Oakland, CA ("Stuck on the Moon"), and an often requested live favorite about a Golden Gate bridge "jumper" ("Double Murder Ballad Suicide") connect the highway lines into a collection of literate, impressionistic, folk-blues mini-epics.
