About Me:

Since 1982 I have been a student of the work of the late Suzanne Haik-Vantoura, which work concerns the musical accents [te`amim (טעמים)] of the Hebrew Masoretic Text. I am interested in many other things, but this is my academic specialty.
Country:
United States
Occupation:
Researcher and writer
Companies:
Living Church of God
Schools:
Ambassador University, University of Arizona
Hobbies:
The Hebrew and Greek Scriptures, natural sciences, music (including songwriting, piano, Celtic harp and keyboard), literature, creative writing, Web page design.
Movies:
Too many to list -- I do have a special fondness for animation (traditional and CGI).
Music:
Strong classical and folk leanings, but find much to enjoy in many kinds of music from around the world. I am a fairly serious collector of Celtic harp recordings.
Books:
Judging by their proportionate number in my library, my favorite books must be the various editions of the Hebrew Masoretic Text and of translations of the New Testament into Classical or Modern Hebrew.

MustyOldBooks, it's Michael V. Fox's sort of disinformation which is the myth. First, the Song of Songs is best explained as being written in the "Royal Hebrew" of David's and Solomon's time, with influences from Phoenician as well as Israelite and Judahite dialects. Later Hebrew drew on Royal Hebrew, not on Torah Hebrew, as its primary model, explaining the superficial similarities. Second, Egyptian chronology is badly flawed to this day, thanks to Manetho's chronology; correct it and one sees that it was Solomon who influenced Egypt, at least as much as vice versa (just as the Bible says). Third, making large revisions to such a self-contained, elegant text as the Song would simply shatter the melopoetic structure, which has no awkwardness at all. I could say more if space allowed, but something tells me that Fox is working from false premises or is grinding an axe, or both.

The Song of Songs and the Ancient Egyptian Love Songs by Michael V. Fox compares the Hebrew version of the Song of Songs (written around the 2nd or 3rd century B.C.) with the original ancient Egyptian love songs/poems written centuries before Israel existed. He examines them nearly line for line including places where the Hebrew scribe clipped off the end of lines because of the awkward translation. I don't know whether the knowledge would help or hinder the musical notes claim since I am not a musician. I was surprised to hear in the NPR story that the Song of Songs was written by Solomon. I thought that myth had long since been done away with.

Hello

I appreciate your comments on my channel. I do find the information on klezmer and its roots in ancient musical traditions interesting and informative. It does underscore the inter-connectedness of all of human cullture and the benefits of borrowing from various cultures. What, for instance, would modern jazz be without the influence of klezmer-originated clarinet licks?
