"New Yorkers are perpetually trying to explain the musical gazingstock that is Sxip... With a musical arsenal that includes the industrial flute, the mutant harmonica, the obnoxiophone, the triple-extended penny whistle, a miniature hand-bell choir, and a regurgitated music box, he conjures a world of infernal calliopes and cotton candy machetes wielded by Gypsy crones with angel feet." --SF Weekly
A beautiful confusion of novelty, experimental and electronics / also a member of the splendid Luminescent Orchestrii

Hey, Sxip, if you don't mind me asking--have you had any compositional training? How did you learn to compose? I'd really like to get into that stuff myself, I took an easy intro to composition class last year (the only one they let non-music majors in) but that wasn't a whole lot of help, I can barely get myself out of the standard verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/verse/chorus framework, let alone play with dynamics much like you do on some of the pieces on your site. Short of dropping out of college to go to a conservatory (which I couldn't get into anyway, as I am a rather poor sight-reader), what kind of education/learning resources might one pursue for composition? What was your approach?

Dan
