Sarah Bernhardt - Queen Elizabeth (1912) swagner99 - 49,707 views - 2 years ago
This is a brief clip from the silent Sarah Bernhardt film "Queen Elizabeth" (1912).

In this sequence, Robert Devereux, the 2nd Earl of Essex is executed. Queen Elizabeth (Bernhardt) visits his corpse, and mourns for him.

There's a subplot involving a missing ring, which (in the context of the story) demonstrates Essex's fidelity to Elizabeth.

"Queen Elizabeth" was by far Bernhardt's most successful film.

Audio recordings of Sarah's voice can be found at the Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project website:

First Photo Interview - 1886 swagner99 - 47,351 views - 2 years ago
French chemist Michel Eugene Chevreul (1786 - 1889) was 100 years old when he became the subject of the first photo interview.

Such a large number of photographs taken in a brief period of time creates the impression of a movie. A movie starring a man born BEFORE the French Revolution!

(The first known film, "Roundhay Garden Scene" was shot 2 years after this photo interview took place.)

TEN FOR CARTER
In honor of Elliott Carter's one hundredth birthday

Composer Elliott Carter has said, "What I do is making America." The rich variety and dynamic movement of American life is reflected in Carter's music, and we've commissioned ten short piano works from ten composers, celebrating his century of innovation and creativity. Performed by pianists Marilyn Nonken and Stephen Gosling, these pieces pay tribute to Elliott Carter, "still America's most promising young composer."

Ten for Carter includes music by Milton Babbitt, Uri Caine, Jeffery Cotton, Alvin Curran, Jeremy Gill, Jennifer Higdon, Jeffrey Mumford, Augusta Read Thomas, Maurice Wright, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich.

All this, and a special treat! The virtuoso members of the Network for New Music Ensemble perform chamber music by Carter: his trio Con Leggerezza Pensosa, an homage to Italo Calvino; Steep Steps, for solo clarinet; Figment no. 2: Remembering Mr. Ives, for solo cello; and excerpts from 4 Lauds, for solo violin.
