Reformatting is horrible!!! But gives a clean start, for real. I know, as far as my home network goes, my computer is the one that I never back up!!! (Surprising. I know.) Are you natively testing the OS's or are you running them on a VM? Also, if you're just starting to sample ubuntu, you should take a good look at other linux distro's for awhile, I didn't take into account the features that certain linux distro's have until I sampled a few.
