Here's my custom Skyfire. It took 6 months of work. I bought a Classics Jetfire figure especially for this kitbash. Initially I wanted to create a cartoon Skyfire. I ended up making a Dreamwave Comics Skyfire. The only difference between the DW and cartoon version is the head. The kitbash was done by measuring, cutting with a dremel, drilling, sanding, painting, sculpting and a lot of patience. The paint apps on the figure were done in multiple sanded layers. I finished all paint apps with multiple layers of clear coat. The sculpting was done using putty.
used materials:
- electric drill
- electric cutting tool
- hammer
- hobby knives
- screwdrivers
- paintbrushes
- Enamel modeling paint
- clear coat
- Milliput hobby clay
- protective gear
the head:
I gave it a paint job and filled the gaps between his antennas and the top of his head with putty so that they become one solid piece.
chest:
The cockpit on his chest was given a repaint and an Autobot sign. I shortened his nose cone with a dremel and sculpted the ends. The removable chest pieces with outlets on the left and right side of his cockpit had to be custom-made. I used putty for this purpose. Since these chest pieces needed to be accurate and have the lines/details of Skyfire it was done in several stages of sculpting, drying, adding new layers of putty and more sculpting. Then ofcourse, the paint job and clear finish.
waist:
I created the typical Skyfire red hip parts using putty and gave it a red/white paint app.
arms:
Triangles were added to his lower arms. It makes no sense, but Skyfire has those things.
hands:
I painted his hands white.
legs:
I repainted them and gave them the red parts which I made with putty.
feet:
I removed the pointy ends of his feet and sculpted blocky Skyfire feet on top of it, after some serious sanding.
back:
I removed the wings from his body by cutting his upper backplate at the ends. I refilled it with putty, sanded it and gave it some paint.
backpack:
I had to reconstruct Skyfire's backpack. I took Classics Jetfire's rocket boosters, cut certain parts, reversed the upper booster parts and drilled holes. I made custom screws that hold the parts together. The gaps were filled with putty and sanded. I used the plastic strips included in the box, cut one of them and used it to connect both parts of the sliding mechanisms on the back with the center block. 2 small wings were sculpted on the center block. I provided the lower part of the center block with 4 holes and mounted it with custom made screws to the boosters so that I can still mount the backpack to Skyfire.
I mounted his wings onto the backpack in such a way that I can transform them. I bought some articulation parts to hold the wings upward when Skyfire is in robot mode. These parts are integrated into the backpack using putty.
