Upper Rouge River Salmon Float Trip..Fantastic fun fill 3 days of salmon and steelhead fishing the Upper Rogue River with guide Harold Hanson with his drift boat. Score 1st day hooked 5 landing 2 with one released wild fish (estimate 25 pounds) and one keeper. We caught all fish on 1st day with sardine wrapped Kwikfish and nothing caught on roe...2nd day hooked 9 landing 2 with one wild released fish and one keeper. One on salmon roe and rest on Kwikfish...... 3rd day hooked 7 landing 4 with one steelhead kept and releasing a big wild salmon (estimate 25 pounds). We stayed at Edgewater Inn in Shady Cove and we launched at Richard Cole launch and floated approximately 14 miles. Early morning producing the most activity. Great weather and safe drift. Highly recommended float...........
Anglers were Bill Shelton and Bill Gygax. We had one incredible shot of a large salmon jumping out of the water and throwing a lure back at us and impelling the seat...Perfect shot angle with a slow motion of that clip. Lots of scenery, rapids, and saw eagle, osprey, deer and various birds ducks and geese. There were two hook mortality study done with them in the Eastern Sierras and sponsored by US Forest service and local business men in Mono and Inyo Counties that proof the mortality rate was equal to or less than fly fishing mortality. Since you aren't breaking off hooks in fish and with the TadPole snagless weights, not breaking off in rocks, you get in more fishing time because you are not down re-rigging so that gives you more time with your bait in the water and you improve your catch. This is especially important when you have kids, as you will not spend all of your time re-rigging them. It is especially a good feeling seeing them swim away. Berkley Power Bait and these hooks and TadPole make one of the most effective trout bait rig there is. Catch and keep, no problem, you get the hook out instantly, and catch and release couldn't be easier. Regarding self-releasing hooks. They are design to release fish without touching them. Basically how they work is the eye of the hook is at the bend of the hook and the leader line goes through a flexible plastic sleeve that goes over leader line and when the sleeve is slid down over the shank of the hook it is set and fish just like a regular fishhook. The sleeve has a second line tied to the top of this and parallels the main leader line and is attach by a sliding 3 turn uniknot tied with thread. When you slid the red knot up by pinching it or using a pocket comb it slides the sleeve up and the hook rotates and self releases.

Fish that have their air bladder inflate and float can be kill by birds and other predators. Using a SFD™ inline with standard fishing gear gets the fish back down and lets the water pressure recompress their air bladder. Do this with minimum loss in fishing time.

Shasta Lake WFO trout bloom bite Pit Arm fishing a 1/2 day prefish for Shasta Derby with Bill Shelton, Gary Mirales and Ray Link. We were fishing the bloom bite in the pit arm of Lake Shasta. Incredible hot action with the hot rod being Bill's downrigger rod set at 8 feet. We fished til 9:30 am then dropped Gary off so he could attend business then went up and fished the McCloud Arm for big quality action on the Baby FBR. Then rain storm moved in at 11 so shut the camera off for the rest of the trip as it was an incredible rain storm for the derby. Went striper fishing in the Delta with Craig Wood and grand son Trevor Watts, for a couple days. It was great trip with good company. We stayed at Sandy Beach Campground near the shore of the Sacramento River just 1.5 miles west of Rio Vista on the north side of the River. Pull through spaces and easy to work with Ranger made staying there enjoyable. We were fishing at anchor for stripers using exclusively the SBR™ (Shad Bullet Rotator™) We purchase a pound of shad at Haps Bait in Rio Vista which last for all the time we were there, as SBR™ get a lot of milage out of a shad and in some cases caught more that one fish on a shad. We were running small weights with some poles just sliders and some with a dropper weights and some with a splitter with weight on one side and the leader on the other side. We used our favorite scents and of which one was shrimp oil and the other was a shad bang and other favorite scents used in the Delta. We fished all the way from Rio Vista, Decker Power lines and even down as far as Antioch area. No certain area was hot for us. I ran mostly just plain shad with scent and with hooks free hanging and occasionally I filet back one side from tail up so some flesh was exposed as recommend by Sal. Craig did a flop butterfly which also was rigged in the SBR™. On the last day I ran a FBR™ (Franko Bullet Rotator™) on one rod (2 rod stamps) for a short period before leaving for home an just before the rain arrived. We caught 2 catfish many stripers and one squaw-fish and one sturgeon, all on the SBR™ with shad. Below is a video of some of our action so you too could get a feel for the fabulous Delta fishing available to you with just a short ride from the Bay area.

Fish for big hog salmon at Monterey famous Hog Farm bite off Point Pinos. Got into them right away...with first one on a clear FBR™ at 90 feet depth on downrigger. Shortly the second salmon came on a red FBR at 90 feet on the wire. Had more take downs but nobody home. Weather was turning bad and headed back before it got to rough. The Hog Farm is the 300 foot line around Point Pinos and is referred to that as that where a lot of big hog salmon or caught real early in the season. This is a beautiful Coastline area near Monterey and Camel and not far from the ramp.
