Delaware-Lackawanna under the Jersey Cutoff rollinswitch - 272 views - 1 month ago
In a rare move east of Slateford yard the D-L Alcos pass under the ex-DL&W Delaware River Bridge, part of the Jersey Cutoff. The D-L had to retrieve a loaded set of cars left at Portland,Pa by Norfolk Southern. interesting how the trackage they are on was the old mainline for the DL&W which sees usage several times a week, while the Jersey Cutoff which became the new shorter high speed mainline in 1912 is abandoned with track removed. A 25 year dream of revitilizing the Jersey Cutoff for passenger use is still on the books and studies continue to be made with no results so far. The Delaware-Lackawanna is an all freight railroad and has headquarters in Scranton,Pa.

Loram Rail Grinder on the Lehigh Line of Norfolk Southern rollinswitch - 236 views - 1 month ago
This multi-unit giant machine grinds the rails back into the desired shape after wear from all those thousands of tons rolling over them every day. Smoke, noise and one giant moving sparkler about describes it. Water tanks spray the rails and ties to cool the molten slag formed by grinding and hoses put out small fires. One of the most dramatic maintenance of way machines on the railroad. Here it moves west on the Lehigh division between Easton and Bethlehem, Pa.

See a lot more of this in an upcoming DVD from http://www.americanrailvideo.c om/

Alco Diesel Steamer - Heat,Steam and Smoke rollinswitch - 330 views - 2 months ago
The day was extremely hot for mid April as the temperature soared to over 90 F. Normally it is in the fifties this time of year. As DL 211, an RS32, leads a five loco train up the Pocono Main, steam starts pouring out the top and bottom. Not a good sign. This combined with problems in three other locos stopped the train. The siren you hear in the background near the end is emergency equipment moving to a nearby forest fire. A bad day with heat, steam and smoke.

Helicopter Fights Pocono Mountain Fire rollinswitch - 126 views - 2 months ago
Sunday, April 26 2009, saw a forest fire outbreak occur near Cresco, Pa. The Delaware-Lackawanna railroad is nearby as well as one of the rare historical wooden stations along the line. This helicopter delivered water to douse and control the fire almost continuosly every few minutes to help save the day. Here it is seen grabbing water in a dump bucket from a nearby pond then flying over the station to head for the mountain and the fire. Great flying.

Norfolk Southern (NS) Railroad Scenes along the Bangor Portland rollinswitch - 210 views - 2 months ago
In the past, the Delaware Lackawanna and Western railroad used this line to access the cement region of eastern Pennsylvania. Today this rural line is owned by Norfolk Southern and is used to transport coal, grain, some light industrial products and deliver cars to a short-line railroad. The grades approach three percent in places as it passes over a rise through Bangor from Delaware River grade to Delaware River grade. That combined with a number of curves as the line follows a creek bed then approaches Portland. makes this a scenic but difficult run. The original DL&W wye is still in place.

Locomotives in common use on this rail are SD-40, GP-38 and 40, SD-60 and 70, along with Dash 9 and an occasional ES unit.

ALCOS OVER THE POCONO MAINLINE Vol 2 rollinswitch - 291 views - 2 months ago
For DVD purchase options, see below.

The Alco RS-3 was a premier freight and passenger locomotive in the early 1950's. It was steadily replaced by more powerful road switchers and Century locomotives in the 1960's, however you can still see these engines with their classic lines at work on an American short line. These and other Alco locomotives are hauling freight on a daily basis and occasionaly even haul passengers.

ALCOS OVER THE POCONO MAINLINE Vol 1 rollinswitch - 343 views - 3 months ago
See below for DVD purchase options.

Watch Centuries and Road Switchers built by the American Locomotive Company haul freight in active service over the Pocono Mountain route. The Delaware-Lackawanna railroad runs on ex-DL&W trackage with beautifully maintained Alco diesels, some over fifty years old. The Poconos are often thought of as a vacation spot but these engines are definitely not on vacation and often have to fight their way up the mountain twice in one run.

The Pocono Mainline was originally built in the 1850's by the what was to become the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Railroad. Originally built to connect the anthracite coal mines in Lackawanna valley to the Central Jersey and then to a port in Jersey City to feed the growing demand for industrial and home heating coal, the railroad diversified and became a general freight hauler as the 1900's progressed. As with many railroads in the eastern United States, dimininishing coal demand as well as competitiion from other transportation modes brought this profitable company to it's financial knees. The 1960 merger with the Erie Railroad was not successful in the long run and Conrail took over in the 1970's. At that time the Pocono route was deemed redundant and remained dormant for years. Local initiative revitalized the rails in the late 1980's and the current railroad, the Delaware-Lackawanna runs a thriving general freight hauling business over this section from Scranton,Pa to Slateford,Pa. They are an all Alco diesel railroad and since the American Locomotive company is long out of business, these are rare and historical locomotives that are still in everyday freight service.
