I'm trying to decide how to handle the way YouTube compresses videos now. They're using a newer compression format (H.264) that unfortunately requires a lot more computer horsepower to play smoothly, even at standard quality. The videos I uploaded before February 2009 run nice and smooth, the ones after that look like they were shot with a cheap cellphone (i.e. awful) because "apparently" a 2GHz Celeron laptop (my primary computer) isn't fast enough to keep up with standard-quality YouTube video in a corner of a browser. And YouTube isn't important enough for me to retire a computer that does *everything else* at an acceptable speed.

I'm trying to see if uploading video that's exactly like a pre-2/09 YouTube format will slip through without being converted to the more demanding format. Similar tricks have been used before to get stereo sound etc, up, but these loopholes have been closed up. It remains to see if I can optimize my videos for older PC's. I may just find another video host if I can't bypass the elevated system requirements.
