WE ARE A FREE DIY MUSIC VIDEOMAGAZINE

IMAGINE OWNING A CAMCORDER. IMAGINE MAKING VIDEOS IN YOUR BASEMENT. IMAGINE INTERVIEWING YOUR FAVORITE BANDS BECAUSE YOU'RE A FAN.

THIS IS WHAT PUNK EMPIRE HAS BEEN ABOUT FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS.

NO MONEY. NO SPONSOR. NO ADVERTISING.

BY THE KIDS AND FOR THE KIDS.

READ ON...
Name: JF Hayeur, DIY Producer
Age: 33
I am a French-Canadian living in Montreal, a welcoming and multicultural city in the province of Quebec, Canada.

I am the founder and director of Punk Empire, a DIY project created in 1994.

On our DIY Channel, we film and document different musical scenes such as: the punk and hardcore scene; indie-rock, roots-rock; jazz; soul; and just about any music done passionately. For us, music is universal. Creation is the only genre. Documentation is our contribution.

We've been archiving different types of artists our way for 15 years.

''Punk rock is not really a style of music, it was more like a state of mind.'' -Mike Watt

We document record collectors, record conventions, record stores, music history teachers, ...and the power that ignited passion in each and every one of them.

Our work is free for your viewing pleasure. Our activities are non-lucrative. We are proud to be an exemplary Do-It-Yourself (DIY)* organization.

''The art lover promotes culture as a universal value, because he can never own it'' -Jean Baudrillard

For those unfamiliar with DIY punk ethics, come have a look at an honnest, open minded, subworld not driven by financial gain but by sheer passion. We are sincere volunteers of our communities.

''You can play a shoestring if you're sincere.'' -John Coltrane

Like Folk music, our videos are made by the people and for the people. Like the Blues, they are raw and authentic. Like Jazz, they are improvised. Like Rhythm and Blues, we pour our hearts and souls into them. We do our best to capture the present moment on stage or on the street. Music is our biggest passion.

Our technique is easy and fair: A one-shot take, a tripod and an easy video edit. We wish to document authenticity this way. Less is more. Anyone can do this. We certainly are ! Freedom of expression. Do it yourself.

''I think the media is art''-Andy Warhol

We think a life worth living is a life worth documenting.

''If there's no audience, there just ain't no show.''-Chilliwack

And you and I are the audience. Artists go on tour and want to connect with us and we want to connect with them. We meet at a crossroad together.

Documenting is our way to give back and to participate creatively in the process. Everything we do is simple. We are here to support them and wish them the best because we think they sincerely deserve it. Not only do we support them but want to document how we support them. Just like a photo album.

It is often said that the vinyl LP was the last authentic feeling to get from Rock and Roll history. We hope our videos make people feel the same way someday. Every passing day turns our videos into music archives for tomorrow's new fan.

Videos are similar to the LP's; they become the living images of the past.

For the first time in history, it is possible for the music fan of today to communicate with the music fan of tomorrow. We hope kids in a hundred years get to watch our work and see what it was like to be kids like us. The phenomenon is already in motion. Kids worldwide, who weren't even born when we started this project and who are now between 10-16 years-old, are watching our videos right now, as you read this, and leaving us fantastic feedback.

PUNK EMPIRE members are more than music fans; they are missionaries. We hope our channel inspires you as much as these quotes inspire us.

''If people never did silly things nothing intelligent would ever get done'' -Ludwig Wittgenstein

Thank you for watching!

''I figured out that the interview and the media was a way of teaching. If you talk to people as if they were future buddhas that any bad karma coming out of it will be their problem rather than yours, so you can say anything you want, and you talk on about the highest level possible''-Allen Ginsberg

*DIY:

Do it yourself, often referred to by the acronym DIY, is a term used by various communities that focus on people creating things for themselves without the aid of paid professionals.

DIY subculture encourages people to take technologies into their own hands to solve needs.

In recent years, the term DIY has taken on a broader meaning. Today, DIY is associated with the international alternative and punk scenes.

These subcultures strive to blur the lines between creator and consumer by constructing a social network that ties users and makers closer together.

Hometown: Montreal
Country: Canada
Interests and Hobbies: We like quotes: ****************************** ''We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind. Mind is your only ruler, sovereign. The man who is not able to develop and use his mind is bound to be the slave of the other man who uses his mind.''-Marcus Garvey (1937) ****************************** "White men are taught to keep away from things because of ownership, not because of respect. In the old days, indians did not have locks on their doors, there was no stealing. We did not take things, out of respect. Owning things is what the white people's lives are about. Every ad you see tells you something is new and what you have is no good, what you don't have is new and better. You build fences around your yards and measure the ground to see if your neighbor's fence is one inch too close to your house. You give nothing away unless you can get something in return. White people have an endless hunger. They want to consume everything and make it part of them. Even if they don't own it physically, they want to own it spiritually. This is what is happening with indians now. The white people want to own us spiritually. Before, you wanted to make us you. But now you are unhappy with who you are, so you want to make you into us. You want our ways so you can say you are Spiritual. You are now trying to become white Indians." -Quote from an Indian elder ****************************** "What is best in creative mental activity cannot be produced by any system of monetary rewards. Opportunity and the stimulus of an invigorating spiritual atmosphere are important, but, if they are present, no financial inducements will be required. All the most important work springs from an uncalculating impulse, and is best promoted, not by rewards after the event, but by circumstances which keep the impulse alive and afford scope for the activities which it inspires." -Bertrand Russell (1918) ****************************** ''You're hurting no one, you're meaning good. If that's a problem, i'm a problem.'' -Johnny Rotten of The Sex Pistols ******************************
Movies and Shows: "Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent. And dont bother concealing your thievery—celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: Its not where you take things from—its where you take them to." -Jim Jarmusch
Music: Listen to The Beatles. Dylan. The Rolling Stones. Everything on vinyl from Aa to Zz including Mozart and Beethoven. Get yourself a turntable. It's more fun, take our word. Then, buy yourself the Top 1,000 albums of all time. You'll have fun for the rest of your life, we garantee it. There's been enough good music recorded in the last 100 years to last us a lifetime of old new discoveries.
Books: ****************************** Read the biographies of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs. Discover the Beat generation. Discover the Wisdom of the Native Americans. Read Spinoza's Ethics, Nietzsche's Also sprach Zarathustra. Read Bertrand Russell and Noam Chomsky. Read Alexander Berkman's ABC of anarchism. If reading is not enjoyable to you (not everyone enjoys reading), start with Jules Verne or J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the rye. Read on religions different than yours. Read philosophers. Memorise quotes. Read and question everyting you read. Your questions will move world conscience forward. Consciousness is a word often used in everyday speech to describe being awake and aware - responsive to the environment, in contrast to being asleep or in a coma. World conscience is the idea that with global communication we as a people will no longer be estranged from one another, whether it be culturally, ethnically, or geographically. Instead, we will approach the world as a place in which we all live, and with newly gained understanding of each other we will begin to make decisions based on what is beneficial for all people. ****************************** ''Be true to yourself and you will never fall.'' -The Beastie Boys

Hey I am Desmond Son . Edmonton Ab. Age 33. I am about to release an independent record and I have some simple but catchy material. I need a bassist and a drummer. I like bands like Cigar/ (early) ten foot pole/ (early) pennywise/ SNFU/ and tonnes more. Just no sappy crap for little girl ( not that there's anything wrong with that ). 33 year old's still skate and play punk rock ? Yes they do.
