This camp only scratched the surface of the potential that these kids have. I was truly blessed to be a part of the first (of many) Mandinga kids capoeira camp...Wait until we have the next one!! As this video demonstrates, capoeira is for everyone regardless of age or athletic experience. Capoeira begins as a physical practice, but it's true gift is the community that begins to grow as people experience and share capoeira together. Our capoeira community is Capoeira Mandinga and our mestre is Mestre Marcelo. Mestre Marcelo has been teaching capoeira in the bay area (and around the world!) for over 25 years. If you like to learn more about capoeira, Capoeira Mandinga and Mestre Marcelo, or view our class locations/schedules please visit our website: www.mandinga.org.
This camp would not have been possible without the great people at Rhythmix Cultural Works in Alameda. Rhythmix Cultural Works (RCW) is a relatively new community arts center in the East Bay that brings people of all ages together for a wide range of high quality arts experiences(including kids and adult capoeira classes!). With a 200 seat theater space, art gallery, book arts store and classroom, RCW offers affordable space in a state-of-the-art facility for live performance, exhibitions, art education and cultural exchange for youth, families and adults. Through exhibits, workshops, classes and performances, RCW supports local, regional and international artists in the presentation of their work and hopes to encourage community participation in the arts. I can say first hand that the facilities at Rhythmix are amazing and were the perfect setting for the Mandinga kids capoeira camp. If you would like to learn more about all of the great stuff going on at Rhythmix you can visit their website: www.rhythmix.org. If you would like to see the capoeiristas (kids and some grown ups too) from Rhythmix and Capoeira Mandinga, we will be performing at the Webster Street Jam in Alameda on Saturday September 12th at 3:30pm
