more
Theatrical trailer for the 1938 Republic Pictures' cliffhanger classic, THE FIGHTING DEVIL DOGS, starring Lee Powell, Herman Brix and Hugh Sothern. Built largely around stock footage from previous serials including DICK TRACY (1937) and ROBINSON CRUSOE OF CLIPPER ISLAND (1936), plus incorporating two budget-saving retrospective/ economy chapters within its brief 12 chapters, FIGHTING DEVIL DOGS was the studio's most inexpensive chapterplay with a 20 day shooting schedule and a final negative cost of $92, 569.00.
Despite its budgetary shortcomings, THE FIGHTING DEVIL DOGS featured one of the screen's most colorful and memorable villains, The Lightning. Having chained the power of electricity along with an arsenal of other futuristic weapons, including a giant flying wing, the leather clad, masked menace set about, in classic pulp style, to being the entire world under his domination.
Doggedly opposing these nefarious machinations were two United States Marine Corps officers, Lieutenants Tom Grayson and Frank Corby, played by Lee Powell and Herman Brix, both of whom had been seen together in the studio's previous serial, THE LONE RANGER, with Powell ultimately being revealed as the famous masked rider of the plains.

Theatrical trailer for Shirley Temple's first Technicolor film, THE LITT...
more
Theatrical trailer for Shirley Temple's first Technicolor film, THE LITTLE PRINCESS (1939).
Based the novel called "Sara Crewe; or, What Happened at Miss Minchin's" by Frances Hodgson Burnett, the author later adapted her work for the stage with the title, "A Little Princess", which debuted in London in 1902 and the following year in New York. Ms. Hodgson's publisher, Charles Scribner and Sons. requested that she expand her original novel to include scenes from the play. The result was the final novel, "A Little Princess; being the whole story of Sara Crewe," which was published in 1905.
With her plucky personality and well-crafted musicals, the dimpled, depression era darling was the number one box-office attraction for three consecutive years -- 1936, 1937 and 1939 -- outdistancing such first magnitude screen stars as Clark Gable, Bing Crosby and Joan Crawford.
By 1939, ten year year old Shirley began losing her ticket appeal and even an additional outing in Technicolor, THE BLUE BIRD (1940) failed to re-establish her former status. As a teenager, she appeared in several well-rspected films including SINCE YOU WENT AWAY (1944), BACHELOR AND THE BOBBY-SOXER (1947) and FORT APACHE (1948). Though her final theatrical film was in 1949, she had a very successful career in television as the host and sometime star of SHIRLEY TEMPLE'S STORYBOOK, which had a network run from 1958-61.
