We're bot chasing the same thing; megapixels don't mean all that much. However lens is the key when you're talking about photographing features. For example you can't get good telegraphic images with poor lens but you also need to "store" the light somewhere and in digital cameras it's the cell. You can have the state of the art lens but with poor cell the images will have lots of static, colours won't repeat themselves correctly and the entity doesn't represent the imaging situation in a correct way. For example during the Moon race Russians did have the technology to send a probe to photograph the dark side of the Moon but they didn't have film that could endure the conditions of space. They used the more high quality film which they acquired from the American high altitude spy baloons. The film those days can be compared to light sensitive cells in digital cameras nowadays.
