The most memorable symbol of the revolution that swept across Eastern Europe two decades ago is the November 1989 opening of the Berlin Wall. Soon after, East and West Germany were reunified, and in the ensuing months the almost unthinkable happened: the Soviet Union was dismantled. The FALL OF THE WALL (working title) tells that story from the unique perspectives of world leaders including, George H.W. Bush, 41st President of the United States and Mikhail Gorbachev, former General Secretary (later President) of the Soviet Union. In the FALL OF THE WALL they take us back to that tumultuous era and tell us the story of how history unfolded. James A. Baker, Condoleezza Rice, and former officials of both German governments also give inside perspective of the delicate diplomatic maneuvering of the end of the Cold War. Additionally, we meet people whose lives were caught up in these turbulent times: families torn apart by the Berlin Wall; student leaders who risked their freedom to agitate for change; and Stasi (East German secret police) officers forced to choose sides. The FALL OF THE WALL, coming in 2010 from HoustonPBS; www.houstonpbs.org
