Hi Craig. The thing you might consider is this. For you, yes this is lighthearted, not meant to be taken seriously and showed no ill intent on your 'Nana,' (which I am sure it did not. But please ask yourself if your ability to be flippant about this is not a bit selfish because actually it has nothing to do with political correctness, just on sympathy for other people's point of view and their perspective. The character was created with exaggerated features resembling other minstrel characters at a time when black and brown people were discriminated against in all kinds of completely ridiculous and unfair ways and the stories of happy-go-lucky darkies were used to reinforce their place at the bottom of society. Just consider this for a second. It is how some people see the same doll that for you is innocent. And perhaps that will lead you to empathy and compassion. Of course, just in my opinion.
