    Arcade Gambling Games Still Open

    by Don Browne 97 views

Despite Florida Governor Rick Scott signing into law Wednesday April 10, 2013 the banning of casino style gambling devices at "internet cafes" and "adult game arcades." one lone holdout still remains in rural Hendry county.

The Luxxor 777 arcade room in a small office mall on State Road 80 on the east side of the city of LaBelle was open and operating Friday. The lone attendant said she was aware of the new law signed this week but said, "No one has told us to close."

She described how her business operates, as one customer walked into the dimly lit room as several dozen brightly colored, flashing machines buzzed in the background. She said customers can get a pin code to operate the computer controlled machines by paying as little as $10. The first payment gets an additional $5 of free play she said.

When winnings points reach the $25 mark, the customer can collect it in cash. She said she didn't know the odds of winning or the "payout" percentage but said it should be marked on each machine. (Apologies for the misspelling of "gambling" in the opening video title!)

    Green Living-$19 Electric Bill

    by Don Browne 43 views

How I reduced my electric bill to $19.21 by conserving energy with better attic insulation, CFC bulbs, more energy efficient windows and doors, and a big saving on water heating using a timer connected to the heater. It only takes about 15-20 minutes to heat the water tank I found, so the timer can be set to turn on only when hot water is needed!

NASA Night Sky Of The World

    by Don Browne 322 views

The night side of Earth twinkles with light, and the first thing to stand out is the cities. "Nothing tells us more about the spread of humans across the Earth than city lights," asserts Chris Elvidge, a NOAA scientist who has studied them for 20 years.

This new global view and animation of Earth's city lights is a composite assembled from data acquired by the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite. The data was acquired over nine days in April 2012 and thirteen days in October 2012. It took satellite 312 orbits and 2.5 terabytes of data to get a clear shot of every parcel of Earth's land surface and islands. This new data was then mapped over existing Blue Marble imagery of Earth to provide a realistic view of the planet.

The image was made possible by the satellite's "day-night band" of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe dim signals such as city lights, gas flares, auroras, wildfires and reflected moonlight.

Named for satellite meteorology pioneer Verner Suomi, NPP flies over any given point on Earth's surface twice each day at roughly 1:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The polar-orbiting satellite flies 824 kilometers (512 miles) above the surface as it circles the planet 14 times a day. Data is sent once per orbit to a ground station in Svalbard, Norway, and continuously to local direct broadcast users around the world.

The mission is managed by NASA with operational support from NOAA and its Joint Polar Satellite System, which manages the satellite's ground system.

Gator In The Bay - Floating Art

    by Don Browne 272 views

Artist Lloyd Goradesky and Historian Cesar A Becerra are creating floating art with steel, tiled mosaic photographs and a floating barge. The "Gator In The Bay," shown here in LaBelle, Florida, when completed will be a 230-foot alligator designed to float in Biscayne Bay in Miami, Florida.

Made of 102 8'x4' floating mosaic photographs to give the illusion of an alligator body, and a large head of steel frame construction, the project will bring awareness of Florida's natural surroundings and the protection of the water and health of the environment using the iconic symbols of the alligator in a floating display in the waters between Miami and Miami Beach, Florida.

    Studio Sounds Hangout LaBelle Fl

    by Don Browne

In stereophonic sound. In what might be the echo eliminating solution when combining voice and sounds in Hangouts without any extra hardware or software, Vinnie Braco and Ian Bennett join a hangout experimenting with more sound settings finding ways to eliminate echoes in hangouts on both "studio" and "voice" settings.

03:00 In "studio" setting on Hangouts on Air, with google talk plugin set at 34% volume level in the computer's volume mixer, there was a large echo, lowering the plugin setting to 1% reduced the echo considerably to almost nothing.
06:00 combining voice and sound to see if there's echo and adjusting sound levels
7:36 switching to "voice" setting in Google Hangouts on Air, setting the google talk plugin to 54% and 100% shows not much echo because the echo canceling feature of Hangouts takes care of the echo (only in "voice" and in regular Hangouts) and my voice gets louder in "voice" setting.compared to the "studio" setting.

    Giant Oak Tree Falls

    by Don Browne 149 views

What has been labeled the second largest Oak tree in Hendry County, Florida split in two during the night leaving Springview Circle in Port LaBelle partially blocked.

The giant tree, probably several hundred years old was believed to be the second largest oak in the county as determined by the LaBelle Garden Club several years ago.

The tree had been carefully pruned every few years by an arborist and had also been reinforced with dacron ropes and slings to try to stabilize the weight of the huge limbs.

It's not yet know if any part of the fallen sections can be saved and how significantly the main portion of the giant tree might be damaged.

11:20 Switching google+ setting to "voice" quality from "studio" to compare video quality from previous run - video/audio is out of synch probably because my computer CPU is maxed out at 100% - changing the setting didn't make any difference
19:10 Adding a 2nd camera to the broadcast view
21:30 Switching to stereo "studio" audio quality
    24:06 Adding a 3rd camera to broadcast
25:50 Adding a video to the broadcast with 3 cameras - the audio and video are out synch probably because my CPU is at 100%
27:13 Lost connection as computer crashes - "We'll be right back" sign appears when connection lost
29:40 Kevin's picture comes up and my voice as I try to end the broadcast and close down two of the cameras to lower my CPU.
32:00 Switching Google+ settings to switch from Xspilt to direct from my camera to lower CPU. Closing Xsplit lowered it from 100% to 50%
36:00 Sound now in monophonic "voice" mode
39:30 I yawn and Kevin does likewise

    Mixed Media Broadcast Test

    by Don Browne

Test of Xsplit Broadcaster for combining media to broadcast on google+ hangouts on air and YouTube Live. Using 10 fps video setting, normal would be 25 fps. Google+ audio "studio" setting.
Notes: the sound from the video did not come through, or was very low. Fuzzy video as well maybe because of "studio" setting or 10 fps. Video froze at 05:33 and lost connection.

    3D Hangout

    by Don Browne

Hangout on Air - Live YouTube broadcast test to determine if the YouTube video player 3D controls for anaglyph glasses will work on this type of video (hangouts on air). For some reason, this will not work when using hangouts on air or YouTube Live, although the controls work fine when uploading a 3D video from the computer to YouTube. (Watch http://youtu.be/arpfvZhLcfU for an example of how it works perfectly in stereoscopic 3D if uploaded from the computer video file)

    Using Internet Explorer to broadcast.

To watch in "parallel" viewing format without glasses, make sure to reduce the video with to about a handwidth or less, by using the zoom control to 75% or cntrl -

(Relax eyes as you do when looking into the distance, and a third picture will appear in the middle of the two picture, and will be in 3D)

To watch in "cross eyed" format without glasses, any size video width will work, although some discomfort will happen if doing it too long!

Note: Minoru 3D camera used at 1280x480 HD left/right format set at closeup range -36

    Take 2 - 3D Glasses

    by Don Browne 67 views

How to select which 3D glasses for YouTube's 3D videos.

If you want to watch with no glasses in the "parallel" format make sure to reduce the video width to about 75% by using you browser zoom control or ctrl - to make it a handwith wide or less. Also try starting with you eyes about 6 inches from screen, relaxing eyes until you can see a third pic in the middle in 3D. For cross eyed viewing there is no limit on video width but there is some discomfort in crossing eyes for any length of time!

Note: using a Minoru 3D webcam set at 1280x480 HD with focus set a closeup -36 and left/right mode "non squashed". The color was reset from the previous video, making it more realistic. To make the anaglyph mode video size normal, the tag yt3d:aspect=4:3 must be added.

Which 3D Glasses To Use On YouTube

    by Don Browne 80 views

Using different 3D glasses for viewing on YouTube. Click on the 3D icon to select which color or glasses, or alternatively select "no glasses" or parallel or cross eyed methods for those without any glasses.

My favorite is green/magenta for viewing on YouTube for a bit better 3D effect and better reds.

Note: Using a Minoru 3D camera and it's microphone set at 1280x40 left/right "squished" mode and closeup focus -36. To make the anaglyph mode video size normal, the tag yt3d:aspect=4:3 must be added.

To see in parallel viewing mode reduce video width to about 75%, or less than handwidth wide by cntl - or zoom control.

    3-D Camera Test 2

    by Don Browne

To see properly in 3D (the "hangout" slide should appear correctly once the following is done)

    1. click on 3D 2. click on viewing method - side by side 3. click on half width

    4. relax your eyes as if looking into distance, don't focus on screen, a third picture will appear in the middle in 3d

    5. You may want to start with your eyes about 6 inches from screen until you get the hang of it, then back away to normal distance. Make sure the video width is less than a hand in width: click anywhere except on video then use "ctrl -" to zoom screen out. ("ctrl +" to zooms it back in)

    6. This 3D viewing method is called "freeviewing" or "parallel" side by side viewing since your left eye is looking at the left pic and your right eye at the right pic when they are relaxed as if looking into the distance.

Note: using a Minoru webcam 1280x480 squished, through ManyCam (it has reduced the width compared to direct to YouTube), horizontal alignment -19 (at my face) The YouTube anaglyph with glasses setting doesn't work on this video.

Amazing 3-D Sound And Video Hangout

3D video and sound live Hangout On Air. Stereo Headphones and 3D glasses recommended (red/cyan).

3-D note: When pausing the video to practice viewing the side-by-side photos, try reducing the screen size so the photo is less than a hand width wide by using your zoom control or "ctrl -"
I find about a 75% reduction works well. To get back to full screen size use "ctrl +"

Audio note: the first 9 minutes were in "voice" mode or monophonic sound, the remainder of video is in "studio" mode or 3D stereo. Notice the much better sound quality through your headphones in stereo.

    Stereo Studio Hangout

    by Don Browne

Testing all possible sound setting combinations for stereophonic Hangouts On Air "studio" quality audio setting to eliminate echo the guests hear back through their audio of their voice.

Thanks to Ian Bennett of London for helping with the tests. And thanks to "Lefty" the squirrel, whom you can see visiting the room through the doorway to taking peanuts from the bag.

02:08 See the squirrel on the chair?
02:40 Playing chords through the computer speakers recording sound with computer mic
03:42 Playing chords this time with Google "voice" setting instead of "studio" - note the much lower quality of sound
04:50 Now switching back to "studio" setting for best quality sound and using now external mic (note: when switching mic I have to go back to Google settings and touch the device setting again or doesn't work as you hear here as no sound is coming through and I don't realize it for several minutes of no sound until 08:58 !)
06:08 See the squirrel again on the chair?
09:21 Now in "studio" setting hearing stereophonic sounds and using rec. playback setting on computer. Without headphone plugged in it appeared that the chords were not playing through, but it turns out they were, I just couldn't hear them and they weren't showing on the green sound bars.
13:00 Ian does a "test" sound and listen for the echo about 1/4 second later
14:10 Ian does test sound after I turned of the "studio" setting and changed to "voice". The echo seems to be largely eliminated. But the chords are in mono with the "voice" setting on
    15:16 See the squirrel again?
16:20 Turning off the rec. playback setting on the computer to eliminate echo, but that does not allow the chords to play through. And I have to go back to google setting to touch on the device setting each time I change recording device.
19:00 Now enabling the rec. playback on computer to hear the stereo chords, and I have to remember to go to the Google settings to hit the device button again.
    21:36 The squirrel is back!
25:06 Turning on Logitech 9000 Pro mic and the rec. playback is off. The sound is a bit garbled and no echo.
28:46 Stereo is on and echo from Ian's "test" (about 1/4 second) with rec. playback setting on computer on.
30:40 Setting google settng to "voice" eliminates most of the echo with a bit of artifact at end of "test" (The chords would be in mono though)
32:20 Chords in mono, "test" with slight artifact at end
33:00 turning off "enhancements" in rec. playback. "Test" seems to have a bit more echo than before still using the "voice" google setting (in mono)
35:15 changing back to "studio" setting (in stereo)
    35:48 Squirrel is back
39:15 Turning off external mic to use onboard computer mic (picks up room and fan noise and keyboard clicks) Chords heard through the computer speaker
42:00 Using "voice" quality and onboard mic and speakers for chord then switch to "studio" quality on the fly. "Studio" is better.
43:45 Ian's "test" playing through speaker has echo
44:40 Back to external mic and rec. playback on computer (squirrel back) in stereo and turning down headphone/speaker volume on computer doesn't change the mic volume but does change the volume of the chords coming through the rec. playback so I turn up the player volume all the way up.
48:00 Ian does "test" with echo about 1/4 second later with my volume turned down.
48:48 "test" again with volume down seems to be less noticeable echo. (Just about to lowest level seems to be the best)
51:10 "test" seems to eliminate echo if I have my headphone/speaker volume turned almost all the way down. Is this the solution to the echo problem using rec. player on computer and "studio" setting on google hangout on air?

Stereo Sound Test - LaBelle, Fl

    by Don Browne

Test of stereo sound for Google Hangout On Air - Youtube Live Broadcasts with Vinnie Braco.

01:00 in monophonic sound using the "voice" setting on Hangouts
03:03 in stereophonic sound using the "studio" setting on Hangouts (note Vinnie's audio starts echoing but the sound is in stereo)

Solution is to either set audio to "voice" setting (and mono) when others are speaking or set my audio recording Google+ input setting to "microphone" or "default device" instead of "Rec. Playback" and keep in "studio" setting and all audio will then be in mono but no echo. Note: when Rec. Playback is set the mic input is used. When Rec. Playback not used the computer switches to the current default mic.

    by Don Browne 539 views

Hendry County, Florida Sheriff Steve Whidden is proud of the recent certification of the department's dispatcher unit. All employees have completed 32 hours of course work, taken certification in CPR, and experienced "ride-alongs" with EMS personnel on emergency calls to qualify for the Emergency Medical Dispatch program.

The new Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) programs aims to save lives by providing specialized training to Sheriff's dispatch personnel to enable quick and efficient handling of emergency medical calls. Previously, dispatcher's only job was to take calls and send emergency personnel to the location.

Dispatch Communications Supervisor Margie Phipps says one of the most important things for the public to remember if they call the Sheriff's office is to remain calm. Sheriff Whidden points out that in cases of emergencies where a life is at stake, emergency vehicles are dispatched immediately, but persons calling 911 should try to remain as calm as possible so the dispatcher can garner important information about the emergency.

The new EMD program allows dispatchers to give instruction to callers to be able to better handle an emergency and possibly save a life because of the knowledge they are able to provide to callers.

Also seen in video, dispatchers at their stations and Lieutenant Susan Harrelle, Public Information Officer.

1:21:00 Test of duet timing with Mark and Don
1:29:00 Vinnie from Hawaii joins tests for audio timing and latency
1:34:20 Vinnie records the audio to test the latency among the three audios
2:03:00 Mark does live guitar strum perfectly to Vinnie's drum beat, but as recorded by Vinnie it was off. (Answer is to perform 1/2 second after performer hears the beat so as to come out on YouTube recording as synchronized)
2:27:00 Mark strums guitar along with Vinnie's beat track perfectly on this YouTube recording (by delaying his strum by 1/2 second each time). Vinnie's recording however, shows not in time because of additional latency of Vinnie's computer.
2:35:30 Don plays drum track to try synchronizing for Mark's guitar strums
2:52:00 Don plays more drum tracks for Mark to try synchronizing with
2:58:28 Don tries synching with Vinnie's synthesizer (singing 1/2 second late) which works for the YouTube recording but not when Vinnie plays it back on his recording because of his latency.

    Test 'Full Screen' Hangout

Anyone know some undocumented keystrokes or easter egg to do full-screen Hangouts where the video is enlarged while the small thumbnail videos at the bottom are deleted? (other than F11 or zoom) I managed to do it by mistake and can't find the keystroke I used to do it. Probably an alt or function key did it while refreshing the screen after the connection was lost.
