Durex 'Fundawear': Vibrating App-Controlled Underwear Pioneering Skype Sex Of The Future

    by IBTimesTV 72 views

You may have seen this video after it went viral last month. Real-life couple Nick and Dani are testing out Durex Australia's latest "experiment" 'Fundawear'. It's pretty much what it looks like, smart-phone-activated vibrating underwear you can control through the internet, but unlike similar devices 'Fundawear' has a personal touch.
But, the real question is, is 'Fundawear' cheating?
Durex originally thought 'Fundawear' wouold be marketed towards young people, but, after rounds of testing and online reviews, they realized just about everyone wants to get their hands on a pair of 'Fundawear.'
In the year 2013 it seems like just about everything in our daily lives is tied to the internet and our phones, but should sex be one of them?
You can't get your dirty little hands on these just yet and they may never even go into production. But judging by the buzz so far it's hard to imagine a future without this titillating technology.

Has The World Stopped Beliebing? Bieber Booed At Billboard Awards

    by IBTimesTV 216 views

The music industry celebrated Sunday evening with the Billboard Awards which celebrate the industry's top artists as decided by chart performances, number of downloads and total airplay. One of the big winners was country star Taylor Swift who walked away with 8 nods. But not all stars shined- as pop star Justin Bieber was booed on stage when he collected his third award of the evening.
Bieber shot to fame from YouTube and has been a pop star since 2008 but recent behavior and scandal has led many to believe that the 19 year old could be falling from grace. Rumors of meltdowns and strange behavior beg the question has the world stopped beliebing?
Bieber has been in hot water over turning up late to concerts, the scandal around his pet monkey, scuffles with photographers, his strange message to Anne Frank and the odd images that circulated of the star wearing a gas mask in public. In addition his own health came into question when he fainted on stage and was hospitalized due to shortness of breath.
The young star when accepting the third award, asked that people respect that it's about the music by saying "I'm an artist and I should be taken seriously and all this other bull should not be spoken".
The booing of the young star may be an indication that the world has taken notice of the scandal and the rumors of the meltdowns and may show that when it comes to being a pop star it's not just about the music. So could Justin Bieber be the next star to fall from grace?

    by IBTimesTV 56 views

Jonathan Corpina, senior managing partner with brokerage firm Meridian Equity Partners Inc., weighs in on Thursday's conflicting jobless claims, the Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index, consumer price index (CPI), as well as housing starts and building permits.
The Commerce Department said on Thursday that starts at building sites for homes fell 16.5 percent last month to a 853,000-unit annual rate, which was below analysts' expectations of a 945,000-unit rate. However, building permits rose 14.3 percent from a month earlier to an annual rate of 1.017 million, the highest level since June 2008.
Also on Thursday, the Consumer Price Index slipped 0.4 percent, the biggest decline since December 2008, as analysts had expected a more modest 0.2 percent drop.
The Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index showed factory activity in the mid-Atlantic region fell to minus 5.2 in May from 1.3 the prior month, the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank said.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits jumped by 32,000 to a seasonally adjusted 360,000, the Labor Department said, which was the biggest jump since November.

Wal-Mart's Earnings Reveal Two Positive Takeaways: Ecommerce & International Sales

    by IBTimesTV 148 views

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT), the world's largest retailer, saw first-quarter fisacal 2014 earnings rise just over 1 percent as the company reported slightly stronger revenue amid continued challenges for its lower-income customers.
Same-store sales in the U.S. fell for the first time in seven quarters after delays in income tax refund checks, challenging weather conditions, and tax hikes from the payroll tax increase.
But Wal-Mart did see two positives: the company's international sales and its e-commerce. International Sales increased by almost 3 percent, while the company's market share increased in a majority of the counties where the retailer operates.
The second significant item is e-commerce. The retailer recently announced plans to expand its e-commerce services this summer by placing lockers in stores for customers to pick up items they ordered from the company online.
For the quarter, Wal-Mart reported a profit of $1.14 a share, down slightly from analysts' expectations of $1.15 a share.
Revenue rose 1 percent to $114.19 billion, missing the $116.29 billion expected by analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.
After the bell on Thursday, Retailers J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE: JCP) and Nordstrom, Inc. (NYSE: JWN) will also reporting earnings.
Struggling retailer J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE: JCP) reports first-quarter earnings Thursday, and analysts forecast that the company will likely miss estimates after it posted a disappointing performance in the last quarter. The company's poor sales results revealed that customers were unhappy with its new pricing mechanism. The Zacks consensus analyst estimate is currently at a loss of $1.17 a share with revenue likely to decrease 13.7 percent year-over-year to $2.72 billion for the quarter. For the year, revenue is projected to come in at $12.3 billion.
Finally, high-end department store Nordstrom, Inc. (NYSE: JWN) is expected to record single-digit profit and revenue growth on a percentage basis after the retailer has benefited from revived demand for its designer merchandise. Analysts are expecting Nordstrom to report earnings of 76 cents per share, up 8.6 percent from a year ago when it reported earnings of 70 cents per share. Revenue for the quarter is projected to finishing at $2.8 billion.

Cicada Invasion 2013: Brood II Ready To Hatch On East Coast After 17 Years

    by IBTimesTV 1,239 views

The Cicada's life cycle is what makes them so fascinating, but it's the fact that they all emerge out of the ground at the same time in swarms, after years of lying dormant underground, that scares people and gives this flying insect a bad rap.
The Cicadas we can expect to see emerging over the next few weeks are specifically categorized as Brood 2, and they wait 17 years underground, living off tree roots, before they are ready to take to the trees, then the skies, in search of a mate.
What exactly does Brood 2 mean? Ed Johnson, the Director of Science, explained...
The Staten Island Museum has the largest Cicada collection in North America, 2nd in the world only to that of the British Museum.
And it's all thanks to William T Davis, better known as the 'Cicada Man.'
Davis was a naturalist who helped found the Staten Island Museum. He was elected curator at the ripe age of 19.
It was Davis who referred to these insects as 'suh-KAH-duh,' NOT 'suh-KAY-duh.'
The public might fear Cicadas, but the truth is, they pose no physical threat to humans. They only emerge from the ground every 13 or 17 years to find a mate.
After nearly two decades in the earth, Cicadas only live for 2-3 weeks above ground, which is just long enough to locate a mate with their highly specialized and widely studied mating calls.
Ed Johnson has spent so long studying these special insects that he has begun to measure his own life in Cicada emergences.
For those living in Manhattan, you have nothing to worry about. Staten Island will be getting most of the cicada action in this spring.
Cicadas may be feared by most but they are hugely celebrated by some. They have amassed a huge cult following, spawning various fan sites and a vast array of Cicada merchandise.
The exhibit features Cicadas from around the world, from Australia, who has the loudest Cicadas, to Southeast Asia, who has the largest.
Cicadas are also a source of nutrients. People around the world regularly eat cicadas. They can be found deep fried, stir fried, skewered, or blanched. They have even been made into ice cream.
Brood 2 will be emerging on the east coast around May 21st, from North Carolina to upstate New York, But, by the end of June, the 2013 Cicada invasion will come to a close, and it will be another 17 years before we see these controversial creatures again.

How Electronic Trading Is Changing Tomorrow's Trading Floor

    by IBTimesTV 150 views

This is what many envision when they think of a trading floor like the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX); however, the day-to-day life of a floor trader has changed drastically from the old days as electronic trading becomes the new norm.
Jeff Grossman, President of BRG Brokerage Inc., has been working on the floor of NYMEX just about longer than anyone and has seen first-hand how the exchange has gone from a roaring trading floor, to what is now just a small band of traders who are losing their voice to electronic trading.
What began as the Butter and Cheese Exchange in 1872 evolved to the New York Mercantile Exchange in 1882: the world's largest physical commodity futures exchange and a preeminent forum for energy and metals trading.
NYMEX once held a virtual monopoly on commodity trading, but in the early 2000s the electronically based exchanges, such as the Intercontinental Exchange, Inc. (ICE), started taking away the business of the open outcry markets.
Although executives at NYMEX felt that electronic trading was the only way to keep the exchange competitive, most open outcry traders were against it because it threatened their jobs.
In 2006, NYMEX teamed up with the Chicago Mercantile Exchange to use the CME Globex electronic trading platform, which made CME the exclusive electronic trading services provider for NYMEX's energy futures and options contracts through 2016.
CME Group Inc. (NASDAQ: CME), which also owns the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Chicago Board of Trade, acquired NYMEX Holdings, Inc. in 2008.
Since then, the trading pits have emptied out as mostly computers are now performing the bids.
Grossman is one of the few traders trying to preserve the open outcry system.

Economic Calendar For May 13-May 17: Chinese Retail Sales And Industrial Production, U.S. Core CPI

    by IBTimesTV 67 views

Economists will be eyeing Chinese industrial production and retail sales on Monday, May 13 after data this week revealed that China's export growth unexpectedly accelerated in April even as shipments to the U.S. and Europe fell, China's Customs Administration said.

Analysts at Bank of America are skeptical that the figures were distorted by fake reports.

On the U.S. front, market professionals will be looking at Monday's scheduled retail sales report for April after a sluggish report for March.

A number of top U.S. retailers reported disappointing April sales on Thursday as consumers gravitated toward discount chains, and bad weather delayed spring shopping in much of the country.

Other data to watch for includes Core CPI scheduled for Thursday.

Strong consumer spending is vital to the health of the U.S. economy today since personal consumption is about two thirds of U.S GDP.

Also On Thursday, weekly jobless claims are issued. Recent reports suggest a strengthening labor market as claims for unemployment benefits fell last week to its lowest level in nearly five-and-a-half years.

Finally on Friday, consumer sentiment for May is released.

U.S. Budget Deficit: Will Tax Hikes And Spending Cuts Widen The Wealth Gap?

    by IBTimesTV 37 views

The U.S. posted its widest budget surplus since 2008 in April on revenue from tax payments by individuals and corporations, the Department of Treasury said on Friday. Joseph Greco, managing director with brokerage firm Meridian Equity Partners Inc., weighs in with IBTimes TV's Jessica Menton about the federal budget and its effect on the widening wealth gap in the U.S. The April surplus was $54 billion more than the same month a year ago. Tax receipts were $407 billion, up 28 percent compared to April 2012, while spending was $294 billion, 13 percent more than the year-ago period, MarketWatch reported. How will the sequestration cuts and recent tax hikes affect this growing disparity? "We continue to see a pushing up against that wealthiest band at the top -- the business owners, the wealthy individuals -- and where they continue to do much, much more, run their businesses, run their operations, with much, much less. They're less reliant on assistance. They're less reliant on workers around their mansions, their properties. And for businesses, they're less reliant on factory workers on the lowest level of employees in terms of wage earning, which is of course what we need to stimulate the economy," said Greco. "We don't need...We would love to have more millionaires, but to have that you actually have to have more people in the work force to begin with. So there's the upward pressure to push up on the wealthiest where they're doing much, much more with much, much less in terms of employees," he added. "Now in the lowest levels, they are required to do much more with much less, but in reverse. They have to do more and they're not given much in return for it. So these people are working significantly harder, they're working significantly longer hours and doing more tasks and more jobs, and they're getting paid less to do it, in which case that money is being spent out. As you have a little bit of inflation coming into the market, you're seeing prices rise, even though CPI may not be moving, real inflation is hitting the market place, is hitting the pizzeria, the gas pump, school costs, education costs, and the retail market. So those people are required to pay a lot more, but they're earning a lot less. So it is, most definitely, providing or producing a much wider gap in between the lowest and the highest bands of the economic strata," he said.

Nissan Earnings Preview: Can The Company Shake Off Sales Slump In Europe And China?

    by IBTimesTV 32 views

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. (NSANY) is gearing up to release its fiscal fourth quarter earnings results on Friday. According to Zacks Investment Research, the consensus forecast for the quarter is earnings of 44 cents per share, up from the reported 36 cents a share in the same period last year.
Recent data revealed that auto sales in the U.S. slipped in April for the first time since October last year, but it increased from the year-ago level of 14.42 million units by 3.5%. Total vehicle sales rose 8.5% to 1.29 million vehicles in the month.
Among the six major automakers, Nissan topped all of them in terms of sales growth.
Nissan Motor posted an impressive 23.2% rise in sales to 87,847 vehicles. Nissan Division sales rose 24.6% to 80,003 units, driven by models like Altima, Pathfinder, Sentra and Rogue. Sales of Infiniti vehicles grew 10% to 7,844 units in the month.

Toyota Motor Corp. sales slid 1.1 percent to 176,160 units due to weak car sales, while Honda Motor Co. recorded a 7.4 percent rise in sales to 130,999 vehicles.

Third quarter net revenue was 2.2084 trillion yen (US$27.23 billion, euro 21.01 billion), down 5.3 percent year-on-year. Nissan reported an operating profit of 62.1 billion yen (US$770 million, euro 590 million), down 47.4 percent compared to the same period in FY2011, and an operating profit margin of 2.8 percent. Ordinary profit was 89.0 billion yen (US$1.10 billion, euro 850 million).

"Nissan's performance in the third quarter did not meet our expectations. This was primarily the result of difficult operating conditions in Europe for the entire auto industry, in China for Japanese automakers, and in the U.S. for Nissan," said Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn. "We have taken action to reignite our sales momentum and growth under the Nissan Power 88 business plan. Looking forward, we have important vehicle launches. We anticipate further yen correction. We have made swift organizational changes to help stimulate our business performance. And we remain confident that we will meet our full-year outlook."

Nissan's forecast for the full fiscal year ending March 31, 2013, is unchanged. Although the operating environment remains challenging, positive contributions from yen correction, and disciplined cost management within the company will enable a renewed focus on achieving robust operating profit. Nissan has forecast full fiscal year operating profit outlook of 575 billion yen (US $7.21 billion, euro 5.65 billion) and net income of 320 billion yen (US $4.02 billion, euro 3.14 billion).

    struggle to re-build.

With summer just around the corner workers are plentiful as they try to re-build

Spring Makeup Trends 2013: How To Recreate An Expert's 'Make Up For Ever' Makeover

    by IBTimesTV 240 views

Edward Cruz has worked with A-list celebrities and top models, including Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Cindy Crawford, and Anna Wintour, but today he is going to show us how any girl on the street can achieve the perfect spring look using a few Make Up For Ever classics and their new colorful Aqua line, which is perfect for the season.

Aqua offers fresh bold colors that are waterproof and long-lasting, which means you won't need to re-apply.

Aqua is perfect for a night on the town or a day at the beach.

Edward began by applying Make Up For Ever's Liquid Lift Foundation #10 to give me even, clean looking skin.

He applied Liquid Lift with a dual fiber brush... which contains natural and synthetic bristles... to help diffuse the foundation, leaving a polished dewy complexion.

It's worth mentioning that the transition between winter and spring can often 'shake up' your skin, leaving you with uneven dry patches, so it's important to find a great moisturizer that compliments your skin.

After a quick dab of concealer Edward set my foundation using his favorite product, Make Up For Ever's Pro Finish Multi-Use Powder (#120).

For the cheeks, Edward decided to slowly build the color, because as he loves to say, 'less is more.'

He used a circular motion to apply Make Up For Ever's Sculpting Powder Blush to create a softer effect, helping to avoid any harsh lines.

He applied Sculpting Blush #18 and #20 to slightly contour my face and give it a sun kissed glow.

Make Up For Ever's Shine On Powder #4 was used to highlight the cheekbones, separating the eye from the check.

Edward emphasizes the importance of using the right tool to apply your makeup because the proper brush will give you 'more bang for your buck.'

So, next time, skip the applicator provided by the makeup brand, and find the right tool... just remember to maintain and wash your brushes regularly.

For the eyes, Edward applied Aqua Cream #54, which is a pearly lilac shade that he believes goes perfect with any skin tone.

He used a stiff brush, slowly layering the color from the lash line to the crease, but he said for this cream shadow, using your finger is just fine.

Just remember, Aqua Cream is smudge proof and won't crease, but it sets quickly so you've got to work fast.

Because color is hot for Spring, Edward added a touch of Aqua Cream #53, which is a light lagoon green, to the inner corners of my eye to brighten up the look.

Next, Edward used the new waterproof Aqua Smoky Lash to open up my eyes and make them pop.

He used a q-tip to gently apply mascara to the lower lashes... a fun technique he uses to avoid clumps.

Edward chose to skip the eyeliner, keeping my face subtle and fresh.

And, for the lips, Edward dabbed Aqua Rouge #18 to complete my spring 2013 look.

Aqua Rouge is a double-ended lip color that provides a long lasting lip stain with an eye catching shine.

One end contains a matte stain, while the other adds a layer of clear glossy moisture.

After Edward brushed up my brows to help frame my face, I was good to go!

Wall Street edged higher in early trade Thursday after an interest rate cut by the ECB and better-than-expected weekly jobless claims in the U.S. boosted investor optimism. On the earnings front, General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) said its first-quarter earnings fell almost fourteen percent on continued weakness in the European market. Also this morning, cereal giant Kellogg Company (NYSE: K) reported results that missed estimates after being dragged down by rising ingredient costs. Friday before the bell, Automatic Data Processing (ADP) will release its latest quarterly results and analysts polled by Reuters expect the company to report third-quarter earnings of 98 cents per share on revenue of $3.11 billion. Despite the slow recovery in the job market, ADP has still soared to highs it hasn't seen since the tech boom. The ADP National Employment Report on Wednesday showed private sector jobs added in April fell short of estimates. The weak report raises concerns ahead of Friday's highly anticipated jobs report about whether the figure is a true sign of weakness in the labor market. The consensus forecast is that the Labor Department will report one-hundred and forty-eight thousand job gains in April, but economists fear that the total could be lower following ADP's estimate. Also on Friday, Duke Energy Corp (NYSE: DUK), Newell Rubbermaid Inc. (NYSE: NWL), and Spectra Energy Corp. (NYSE:SE) report earnings results before the bell.

Staten Island, New York Still Struggling Six Months After Hurricane Sandy

    by IBTimesTV 78 views

It has been six months since Hurricane Sandy slammed the United States' East Coast. And New York's Staten Island, one of the hardest hit areas, is still struggling to resettle. We visited volunteer groups, the Yellow Team and the movement church, formerly known as the Brown Cross, to see where they are in terms of progress.

The Yellow Team, like many other volunteer groups, jumped into action immediately following the super storm. Dedicated to cleaning and re-building, the volunteer group is comprised of community members who have become a family dedicated to rebuilding their homes.

We spoke to Farid Kader, who described the ongoing battles facing the group every day, citing a lack of funds being a paramount concern. He also talked about mold becoming a huge problem for those rebuilding, as it could potentially affect the health of the workers and volunteers.

For contractors like Michael Gonzalez, work has been plentiful in the hard hit areas of Staten Island. But funding has been slow to come in, making attaining professional assistance difficult. Michael's team alone has worked on two houses in the past six months, while many people are left waiting.

The Brown Cross was started by a group of off-duty police officers, fire fighters and community members post storm. The group is now led by Pastor Steven Martino of The Movement Church. Humble about the work he has done, Steven works six days a week, and, according to some, has become somewhat of a local hero. He's the kind of man, Martino said describing himself, who " wouldn't ask anyone to do anything he wouldn't himself."

Like the Yellow Team, The Movement Church needs financial assistance, and the continued help of the volunteers.

The progress of rebuilding and recovering is far from over, but the people of Staten Island stand strong in their mission to rebuild their community.

While other Staten Island residents live in hotel rooms, waiting for a return home, or for funds that may never appear, the volunteers are continuing the fight to restore the city back to its citizens, despite the possibility that things will never be the same again.

Vaccine To Cure Cancer: New Breakthrough In Cancer Treatments By Northwest Biotherapeutics

    by IBTimesTV 164 views

Northwest Biotherapeutics, Inc (NYSE: NWBO), a development stage biotechnology company focused on discovering, developing and commercializing immunotherapy products that generate and enhance immune system responses to treat cancer, is leading the way to a new approach to cancer treatment, adding years of survival and doing so without toxic side effects at lower cost than pricier new cancer drugs. Northwest Biotherapeutics CEO and Chairman Linda F. Powers spoke about how cancer research is moving forward. One-hundred cancer specialists from around the world made headlines recently after they jointly appealed to the major pharmaceutical companies to curb the skyrocketing pricing of cancer drugs at $100,000 per year and up. NW Bio is cutting costs while adding years of survival, and doing so without poisonous side effects, and make these new breakthrough treatments available to all patients. High priced cancer drugs are delivering very little benefits and most of them come with serious toxic side effects, according to NW Bio. The company's new approach to fighting cancer at a cheaper cost involves personalized immune therapies, mobilizing a patient's own immune system to attack his or her cancer. These personalized immune therapies can apply to all types of solid tumor cancers, and there are two main versions: one for tumors that can be surgically removed, and one for tumors that are inoperable. These personalized immune therapies are made from two key ingredients: the master cells of the immune system, called "dendritic cells," which were the subject of the Nobel Prize in 2011, plus biomarkers of the patient's tumor. The immune cells are obtained through a blood draw from the patient, and are then activated and "educated" to recognize the patient's tumor biomarkers, making the immune cells into a powerful vaccine that naturally mobilizes the rest of the immune system to attack the cancer, and only the cancer, without poisoning or damaging the normal cells in the body. The vaccine, composed of these activated, "educated" master immune cells, is administered as a simple shot under the skin in the upper arm, like a flu shot. For inoperable tumors, the vaccine is injected directly into one or more tumors.

How We Turned Bitcoins Into Beer

    by IBTimesTV 603 views

While bitcoins may be rising in popularity there are still only a handful of brick-and-mortar stores to spend the new digital currency.
EVR Lounge, a bar in midtown Manhattan wants to change that. They began accepting bitcoins as payment a few weeks ago. We thought it would be fun to see how the technology works and turn some bitcoins into a round of drinks so we bought 50 dollars in bitcoins and headed uptown.

EVR Lounge started accepting bitcoins as payment a few weeks ago. For, Alex Likhtenstein, the switch was a no-brainer.

The technology is designed to be user friendly. The waiter just has to enter the amount of the bill in dollars, the app calculates cost in bitcoin and generates a qr code. The customer then scans the code and the payment is sent. Payments to EVR are automatically transferred to dollars so they never have to actually carry the digital currency and therefore avoid any risks in fluctuation.

Hearing about it was great, but we wanted to see what it was like to actually spend bitcoins.

    by IBTimesTV 76 views

On Tuesday, investors will be eyeing tech giant Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) as it's scheduled to release results after the closing bell. Although Apple Inc. Investors will be keeping a close eye on the earnings report to gauge demand for the company's iconic smartphone as Samsung and other rivals try to grab the market share. iPhone rumors constantly swirl for every new launch, but this year much of the speculation has focused on whether demand for the iPhone is fading as an increasing number of consumers choose alternatives, including phones from Samsung and those produced by other adopters of Google's Android software. Fed's Beige Book: "Fear Of Not Accumulating Enough Wealth Has Passed" Says Corpina

    by IBTimesTV 102 views

Jonathan Corpina, senior managing partner with brokerage firm Meridian Equity Partners Inc., weighs in with IBTimes TV's Jessica Menton about the Federal Reserve's Beige Book report which showed the U.S. economy is growing at a "moderate" pace. The Federal Reserve released its Beige Book collection of economic anecdotes on Wednesday used by the Fed for making interest rate decisions. The report showed the U.S. economy is growing at a "moderate" pace, as housing's rebound and the continued recovery in the auto sector offset weaknesses stemming from federal government budget cuts, the expiration of the payroll tax cut and winter weather, the Federal Reserve said Wednesday. The Beige Book released by the Fed, covering the period from late February to early April, is just slightly stronger in tone than the last Beige Book, which said the economy was growing "at a modest to moderate" pace. Economists and analysts will eye it for clues as to whether the Fed's business contacts see the same slowdown as recent economic reports, such as weak payrolls growth and retail sales have shown.

FDA Bans Generic Original OxyContin: New Form Of Painkiller Will Be Abuse-Resistant

    by IBTimesTV 194 views

The Food and Drug Administration announced on Tuesday that they will not approve any generic versions of the original form of the widely abused painkiller OxyContin.

In April of 2010 the FDA approved Purdue Pharma's reformulated version of the drug that is resistant to chewing, crushing, breaking, or dissolving in water.

OxyContin is one of the most powerful and abused painkillers on the market.

The original form can be snorted, injected, or smoked to produce a quick high.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, overdoses from painkillers in the U.S. caused more deaths in 2010 than heroin and cocaine combined.

Purdue's new version was designed to discourage the painkiller's abuse, and when dissolved in water, it simply turns into jelly.

When FDA approved Purdue's reformulated version of Oxycontin three years ago, they called it a "step in the right direction"... but now, in 2013, the FDA has banned the original form of the drug, barring it from the legal U.S. market.

The FDA said in a statement, "The FDA has determined that the benefits of original OxyContin no longer outweigh its risks."

With Purdue's exclusive patent rights to produce the original OxyContin approaching its expiration date, generic pharmaceutical firms were eyeing the opportunity to produce the potentially dangerous drug.

    Thumbnail credit: Flickr user 'pingpongdeath'

But, sadly for them, Purdue Pharma now has many more years of exclusive patent rights over its new abuse-resistant version of Oxycontin.

Class Aims To Teach The Art Of Reading Micro-Expressions

    by IBTimesTV 147 views

Its something we do every day... at work, on the bus, at home, on the street -- We read people.

But the question is, are we any good at it? Are we just 'looking' at people? Or are we truly 'seeing' them...

We stopped by LifeLabs in New York to learn how to notice and read micro-expressions, which, unlike regular facial expressions, are much more difficult to hide.

Micro-expressions are the small contractions of the facial muscles that last only tenths of a second, and Dr. LeeAnn Renninger, the teacher of LifeLabs's 'Seeing People' course, is an expert on what those contractions mean.

In this 2.5 hour class, people learn how to detect and read these micro-expressions, giving them better insight into someone's true intentions.

The lab is based on Dr. LeeAnn Renninger's reseach on memory and the 5 senses, Paul Ekman's research on facial expressions, and Karl Grammer's research on movement cues.

Through the use of high tech imaging software, used to train detectives and secret service abroad, we were able to โ€ƒ
test our people reading skills at the beginning of the lab and again at the end, to measure our progress.

LeeAnn must know what she is talking about, because my score for the pre-test was a 9/14, and by the end, I got 100% of the questions correct.

There are 7 universal expressions that each have very unique characteristics, they include happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, disgust, and contempt.

Some emotions have clear hotspots, such as an inner corner eyebrow raise for sadness, one corner of the mouth raised for contempt, and a tense lower lip for fear.

The trick is learning how to see these signs, and act accordingly.

Occasionally you will witness a mixed emotion, which is some combination of the 7 universal expressions, and it takes a little more time to pinpoint the various key indicators.

Everyone in the class had to pair up with a partner and give examples of what they believed the 7 expressions looked like.

LeeAnn, the Director of LifeLabs which she founded in 2002, wanted to provide a place where people can learn useful life skills.

LeeAnn explained that one of the most common misconceptions about the 'Seeing People' lab is that people go in โ€ƒ
thinking they will learn how to become a human lie-detector.

Instead, LeeAnn wants people to learn how to read people better in order to facilitate better honest communication, not call them out for lying.

The target audience for these labs is broad. These unique classes attract business men, teachers, students, law enforcement officials, and many more.

LifeLabs has a few classes every week, for 30-40 people, and they are continually booked.

Some of the other labs they offer include body language, decision making, and productivity lab.

Google Glass Already Banned In Many Places Months Ahead Of Release

    by IBTimesTV 47,266 views

One of Google's latest projects, Google Glass, isn't even available yet, but some businesses and establishments are already preemptively banning the product!

Google Glass is a pair of glasses connected to the internet that allow you to take pictures, record videos, and access the internet hands free, right in front of your eyes.

You can shop, check the weather, check your email, video chat, send messages and pretty much everything else you would do online.

Co-founder of Google, Sergey Brin, announced Google Glass last year, and it's clear he has high hopes for the augmented reality glasses. It sounds cool, but I have to admit, they do look pretty silly, and they are raising some serious privacy concerns.

So, let's go over the places you are NOT allowed to wear the smart glasses you can't even buy yet...

It all started with a bar in Seattle called the 5 Point Cafรฉ, who decided to ban Google Glass ahead of its release date later this year, mainly as a publicity stunt or social statement.

The posted a message on their Facebook page that read 'For the record, the 5 Point is the first Seattle business to ban in advance Google Glass. And [butt] kickings will be encouraged for violators."

Some casinos and strip clubs, in places like Las Vegas and elsewhere, have banned Google Glass, along with other electronics patrons can use for filming.
Some major movie theaters, including Regal Entertainment Group, have banned Google Glass, which makes sense seeing as how no recording devices are every permitted inside a movie theater.
Cars are also an issue. Legislators in West Virginia have already proposed an amendment that bans Google Glass or any head-mounted display while driving.

There is even an organization called 'Stop The Cyborgs' founded in response to the Google Glass project. Their aim is to stop a future in which privacy is impossible.

They are calling on Google to ban face recognition systems for the glasses, asking them to implement a 'do not track system,' and promise that all information gather by Glass will remain the property of the owner or subject. And that information will be encrypted so that it is impossible for it to be data-mined.

If you'd like more information about the 'Stop The Cyborgs' movement, visit stopthecyborgs.org.

Many companies are not ready to make a statement regarding the new Google technology, but as a generic rule, if an establishment doesn't allow cameras/photos/video, it's pretty safe to say they won't welcome Google Glass.

Google actually responded to these recent events surrounding Google Glass, telling Forbes, "It is still very early days for Glass, and we expect that as with other new technologies, such as cell phones, behaviors and social norms will develop over time."

Skeptical Chinese Data Casts Doubt On Expected Growth

    by IBTimesTV 40 views

China's run of better- than-forecast export growth has analysts suggesting that the country may be hiding slower than expected growth. Mark Otto, director with trading firm Knight Capital Group Inc., weighs in with IBTimes TV on the latest Chinese macrodata as well as a preview of China's GDP forecast.

Bloomberg News reported that Goldman Sachs, HSBC and Nomura theorize that companies may be inflating the value of shipments to bring money into China and evade currency controls and that companies might be exporting the same goods twice to claim tax rebates.

China's GDP is released April 15 and the country forecasts that its economy will grow around 8 percent.

Bikinis Trademarks The Term 'Breastaurant': Is Hooters Shaking In Their Booty Shorts?

    by IBTimesTV 648 views

The terms 'breastaurant' is often used to describe eateries where scantily dressed waitresses serve their patrons food and drinks. But Texas chain, 'Bikinis Sports and grill' has trademarked the term, as confirmed by a press release by their CEO Doug Guller. The chain first opened in 2006, and has huge plans to expand, with a strategy to open fifty more restaurants around the country in five years.
Hooters is an American Icon and arguable the first 'breastaurant': They do however have a lot of competition from places like The Tilted Kilt, Bone Daddy's and Twin Peaks. With over 460 restaurants around the country, the favored American chain is struggling to stay number one as evident in a 4% sales drop in the past year.
The 'breastaurant' industry is lucrative making over $1 billion dollars annually. The trademark of the term has generated a lot of publicity, and time will tell how it affects industry leaders like Hooters.

Haven't Filed Your Taxes Yet? Here Are 5 Last-Minute Tips

    by IBTimesTV 1,029 views

Well, it's that time of year again that most of us try to avoid until the very last minute: tax season. With the April 15th deadline quickly approaching, here are five last minute tax tips for filers:

    1. File Online

There are multiple free tax-filing options online and you don't have to waste time having your taxes prepared. Visit the IRS website by clicking on the free file link to see if you're eligible to free file.

Participating software companies such as TurboTax, H&R Block and many more make their products available through the IRS. Some also support state tax returns. Review the three-step process on the IRS website, and you'll be on your way to e-filing your return--for free!

Another advantage to filing online is the ability to E-file with direct deposit.

In addition, you can avoid long lines at the post office if you e-file your tax return. Your e-filed return is safely transmitted to the IRS and you can track the status of your tax refund.
If you, instead, mail your tax return, you won't know where your tax refund is for at least a month and have to deal with the fear that the IRS may not have even received your tax return! The big benefit is that when you e-file with direct deposit, in most cases you'll receive your refund in a more timely manner.

    2. W2express.com

If you've somehow lost your W2 form, visit www.w2express.com where many large companies have W2 forms available. You will need a user ID from your employer. Another benefit of using this is that you can import your W2 directly if you are using an online software program to file your taxes, such as TurboTax.

    3. Identity theft

The Internal Revenue Service issued its annual "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams two weeks ago, reminding taxpayers to use caution during tax season to protect themselves against a wide range of schemes ranging from identity theft to return preparer fraud.

One example is a phishing scam, typically carried out with the help of unsolicited email or a fake website that poses as a legitimate site to lure in potential victims and prompt them to provide valuable personal and financial information. Armed with this information, a criminal can commit identity theft or financial theft.

Another scam includes return preparer fraud where corrupt preparers prey on unsuspecting taxpayers. The result can be refund fraud or identity theft.

You can find the list at irs.gov by clicking on "Avoid dirty dozen tax scams" tab.

In many cases, an identity thief uses a legitimate taxpayer's identity to fraudulently file a tax return and claim a refund.

    4. Deductions & Credits

There are so many deductions and credits that people overlook each year during the tax season.

Tax service provider Jackson Hewitt has a list of the 50 most overlooked tax deductions, and you can find that list by going to Jackson Hewitt.com/mytaxmanager. Then select the tab called "my resources" and a deductions tab can be viewed on the right hand side of the screen under "My Tax Resources." Click on "Top 50 overlooked deductions" to see common deductions many overlook. You can also select credits under the "My tax resources" list that shows overlooked credits that are commonly missed.

Some of the most commonly missed tax deductions and credits include Job search expenses, moving expenses, charitable donations, the earned income tax credit plus many more.

    5. File an extension

If you aren't able to file your federal individual income tax return by April 15, file the IRS form 4868 online or by mail to apply for an automatic 6-month extension of time to file.
However, it's important to note that submitting form 4868 doesn't extend the time for payment of tax, which is still owed by the April 15 deadline of your return.

If you find you owe money and can't pay after preparing your taxes, file your taxes and apply for an installment agreement by using form 9465 available at irs.gov which provides relief to struggling tax payers.

If you owe less than $50,000, you may be able to establish an installment agreement on-line, even if you have not yet received a bill for your taxes. Go to IRS.gov to apply to pay on-line.

Click on the payments" tab and click the link called "apply for an installment agreement." This way, you can still file and lessen some of the penalties incurred on your unpaid tax liability.

Do not file this form if you are currently making payments on an installment agreement or can pay your balance in full within 120 days. Instead, call 1-800-829-1040.

Bottom line, regardless if you file an extension with form 4868 or apply for an installment plan by using form 9465, you still will be hit with fees, fines and penalties by not paying by the April 15 deadline.

    Next Year -- Get Organized

Use this year's return as a tool for reducing next year's taxes!

This CEO Wants To Change The Way You Read Web Comics

    by IBTimesTV 55 views

Webcomics have exploded in popularity in recent years. But unlike videos and blogs, there are few major platforms online for the new medium.

Chang Kim, CEO of Tapas Media, wants to change that with his new project called Tapastic.

Tapastic has become the new consumer destination for webcomics, providing various indie comic artists and writers the chance to share their work for free.

Tapastic provides over 50 original 'bit-sized' serialized visual stories covering a wide variety of genres.

Kim, who was a PM of Blogger at Google, was inspired by the popularity of Korean Webtoons, which is one of the most popular Internet services in South Korea.

San Jose, Calif.-based Tapastic is the first major project for Tapas Media, which was founded by Kim in March of 2012.

Tapastic had no trouble raising $750,000 from investors that include 500 Startups, SK Planet, Strong Ventures, and more.

Tapastic is available online at Tapastic.com and as a free Android and iOS app.

Preview Of U.S. March Jobs Report 2013

    by IBTimesTV 99 views

The March payroll report is released on Friday, April 5, and investors will keep an eye on the unemployment rate and job numbers to see whether hiring maintained the momentum seen in February.
According to the Wall Street Journal, forecasters expect only a small deceleration in the change in nonfarm payrolls. The median forecast with a survey compiled by Dow Jones Newswires expects 200,000 jobs were created this month, on top of the 236,000 new hires in February, the Wall Street Journal said.
February's unemployment numbers ticked down to 7.7 percent from January's 7.9 percent rate. The March unemployment rate is expected to remain at 7.7 percent.
Market professionals will be eyeing the jobs report to see how the spending cuts that took effect on March 1 from the sequestration affected consumer spending, as well as employment.
Will the gauge of recent data and positive trends in the Dow and S&P 500 be enough to sustain growth in 2013? "The U.S. has generated a burst of job growth in each of the past two years, only to see hiring soften by midyear as key sectors of the economy faltered," MarketWatch said.

Easter 2013: Why The Easter Bunny And The Eggs? The Easter Bunny's Pagan Roots

    by IBTimesTV 4,880 views

Easter Sunday is the most well-attended Sunday service of the year. Easter is a Christian holiday intended to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the 3rd day after his crucifixion at Calvary, as described in the New Testament.

Today, the meaning of Easter, a lot like Christmas, has become overshadowed by modern mythologies, traditions and commercialization. Now it has come to involve colored eggs, candy, huge feasts, and people dressed up like rabbits

So, it begs the question; why the Easter Bunny and why the eggs?

Most traditions are based on the welcoming of Spring. Today's Easter Bunny is representative of much older pre-Christian Pagan traditions that were centered around Spring and fertility. The rabbit was sacred to the mythic goddess of Spring Ostara, or Eastre, which is where Easter takes its name. Rabbits have frequent multiple births so they became a symbol of fertility. As for the egg? Eggs are a symbol of rebirth, and were often used in Pagan Spring celebrations. Christians then adopted the egg symbolism to represent the rebirth of Jesus Christ. The egg can also represent the tomb from which Christ arose.

Rumor has it, as Christianity spread, they kept some Pagan Easter traditions to make it easier for people to convert to Christianity. It's unclear why the eggs are dyed, but some believe dyed eggs were used in ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman Spring festivals, and some were even given as gifts during the Spring season.

We scoured the floor of the 2013 New York Auto Show to find some of the hottest car models and see what they had to say about the industry and what it's like to have to stand in front of a car for 8 hours at a time. We expected stories about unwelcome advances, but one this we didn't expect to find was Luis Santiago, a Dodge Ram spokesmodel who's been in the business for 7 years. He said he's become used to being asked, "Where's the girl?" and takes it in stride. Luis was the only male model at the 2013 New York Auto Show and the field is still dominated by women. That's probably not going to change any time soon, but we'll expect to find more Luis' in the future now that more and more women are purchasing cars.

Powerball Winner Surfaces: What Would You Do With The Winnings?

    by IBTimesTV 5,136 views

Making history as the fourth largest win in Powerball History, Pedro Quezada had every reason to smile today. The father of five from New Jersey walked away with a whopping $338 million dollars from Powerball. The father has already affirmed that he wants to use his winnings to help others. But learning from history, what have other Powerball winners done with their cash?

Philip Pina a mechanic won $29 million dollars in 2007. The bulk of his cash was used to invest, as he went to a financial advisor for help. He then spent some cash renovating his shop where he works as a mechanic.

Patrick Nowlin won $19 million dollars and he used his cash to help those closest to him. He assisted in helping his town pay for the 4th of July fireworks, contributing to a celebration that everyone close to him could enjoy. He then donated $2 million dollars to the diabetic wing of The University of Wisconsin. His son suffers from diabetes and he also used the cash to fund his treatment.

But with money, comes problems: Past winners by all accounts have affirmed that once people know you're an instant millionaire they want financial help from you. The question is who would you help if you could? And if you were an instant millionaire how would you spend your fortune?

New York International Auto Show 2013: Concept Cars We Can't Wait to See

    by IBTimesTV 4,600 views

Auto shows are the fashion runways of the car world. And like fashion shows much of what we see will drive innovation and inspire future designs even if it never makes if off the runway. With that in mind the New York International Auto Show kicks off this week and here's a look at some of the concept cars we look forward to seeing.

The Acura NXS. Acura showed off the latest iteration of the 2015 NSX at this year's Detroit Auto Show to much fanfare. The Japanese supercar went out of production in 2005 after shaking up the world of supercars for nearly a decade and a half. The concept will utilize Honda's hybrid technology and will be propelled by a four-wheel drive setup they're calling 'Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive'. The 3.7 Liter V6, engine will be supplemented by an electric motor, typical of Honda's hybrid's. But the front wheels will also have a pair of electric, electronically-controlled motors, giving them the freedom to adjust their power and improve handling during turns. Given that the car is far from production lines specs are limited, but Car and Driver asserts that likely competitors will be the Porsche 911 and Audi R8 and is expected to cost north of $100,000. On a side note the iconic Japanese vehicle will not be produced in Acura's home country. The entire production will take place in Ohio.

With its chubby cheeks and expressive eyes complete with eyebrows the Smart's ForStars concept certainly turned heads at the 2012 Paris Auto Show. And with a more sporty body the European carmaker seems to be hoping to make moves into the crossover market. The interior is fashioned like a spaceship with grand sloping curves and a steering wheel pulled from Star Trek. The most playful aspect of the ForStars is most likely the movie projector built into the hood of the vehicle. Operated by an iPhone the projector can be shined onto a flat surface and speakers built into the sides create the complete cinematic experience.

The BMW i3 concept is a completely electric car with a range of 80 to 100 miles. Through what BMW is calling "optional DC fast charging" the battery can supposedly be charged up to 80% in 30 minutes. Plus, the car is outfitted with a gps that will tell the driver where the nearest charging station is, although that won't be practical in most locations. Beyond that, the car is quick, able to do 0 to 60 in under 8 seconds. Rounding off the car and giving it a futuristic look are those sleek banks of windows meant to give passengers a larger sense of space.

BlackBerry Z10: Does It Compare To The iPhone 5 And Samsung Galaxy S4?

    by IBTimesTV 5,074 views

The new BlackBerry Z10 hits stores today, which is a big test to see if BlackBerry can reinvent itself.

The launch of the Z10 is exciting because it means a lot of firsts for Blackberry.

This is the 1st major phone launch since RIM rebranded itself as Blackberry.

The Z10 is also the first flagship BlackBerry phone without a keyboard OR buttons.

AND the Z10 is the first flagship BlackBerry phone to run the all-new gesture based BlackBerry 10, or BB10, operation system
    Now let's cover the specs...

The Z10 boasts a 4.2 inch display, 16GB of internal storage, an 8 megapixel rear camera with 1080p recording, and a new text prediction function.

The company hopes the Z10 will revamp their image and make them a major competitor for top dogs like Samsung and Apple, but how do the phones differ?

The iPhone 5 and BlackBerry Z10 have the same $199 price tag, but the Z10 is longer, wider, and a little thicker than the iPhone5, but nothing compared to Samsung's bestselling Galaxy Note 2.

The iPhone 5 and Z10 both run on the high-speed LTE networks, and have similar processing speed.

The Z10's removable battery can achieve 10 hours of talk time, compared to the Iphone 5's 8 hours.

Blackberry's CEO Thorsten Heins actually said he believes the iPhone is outdated, but that's probably because BlackBerry has been losing ground to Apple's iPhone since its launch in 2007.

Now, when it comes to the new Samsung Galaxy S4, its Exynos 5 processer is a true beast. I'm not sure is the Z10's dual-core CUP processor can quite compete, but it's a close race.

The Galaxy S4's screen is slightly larger at 5 inches and has a 1080p HD AMOLED display, which tops the Z10's 720p display.

The S4 is powered by Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, but we don't know yet if its better than the Z10's new BB10 OS.

The BlackBerry Z10 is available on AT&T, T-mobile, and Verizon, but NOT Sprint Nextel.

Whale Exhibit At Museum Of Natural History Highlights Majestic Giants

    by IBTimesTV 309 views

Whales: Giants of the Deep opens at the American Museum of Natural History on March 23 and the exhibit transports visitors to the stunning underwater world of the mightiest animals on Earth.

The new exhibition highlights whale evolution, biology, diversity, and whale conservation.

By the mid-1900s, commercial whaling left many whale populations severely depleted, as Europe and America actively hunted whales for their rich blubber.

While much is known about whales and their ancestors, there is still a lot to learn and new discoveries are being made every day.

Whales are mammals, like us, and their ancestors used to walk on land, but some 55 million years ago whales evolved to live in the sea.

Whales features more than 20 skulls and skeletons, including many rare specimens, on tour from the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

New Zealand is home to the Maori people, whose mythologies and histories are deeply tied to whales.

The day IBTimes TV got a sneak peak of the new exhibition, the Senior Curator of Maori, from Te Papa in New Zealand, explained the relationship between the Maori tribe and whales, why it's important to carry on Maori traditions, and even blessed the exhibit space with a traditional Maori song.

While there are many fun interactive spots in the Whales exhibit, it's clear that the life-size replica of a blue whale heart is the main attraction.

According to a group of kids exploring the whale heart, the Whales exhibit is going to be a hit.

Whales: Giants of the Deep runs from March 23 to January 5, so you have all summer to come learn about these fascinating marine mammals.

Does A Drop In Jobless Claims Really Reflect An Improving Labor Market?

    by IBTimesTV 71 views

Wall Street suffered its biggest loss in nearly a month on Thursday after increasing fears over a banking crisis in Cyprus, as well as weak euro-zone economic data disappointment investors.

Although initial jobless claims in the U.S. rose to 336,000, from an upwardly revised 334,000 the previous week, the Labor Department said Thursday that a four-week moving average showed initial claims are at their lowest level in five years.

According to the Department of Labor, the number of Americans designated as "not in the labor force" reached a record high in February at 89,304,000, up from 89,008,000 in January, CNS News reported. Americans not in the labor force are defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as those who are unemployed and no longer looking for work, including those who retired on schedule or retired early.

The unemployment rate in the U.S. decreased to 7.7 percent in February from 7.9 percent in January.

Other data Thursday showed a pickup in manufacturing growth for March as Markit's Flash U.S. Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index rose to 54.9 this month from 54.3. In addition, existing home sales increased 0.8 percent to an annual rate of 4.98 million units last month, the highest level since November 2009, the National Association of Realtors said on Thursday.
Separate data showed HSBC's flash China PMI rebounded to 51.7 in March after dropping to a four month low of 50.4 last month.

    Spring Has Sprung: Here's Why

    by IBTimesTV 356 views

Spring is here. And so is the Spring Equinox. Or is it the solstice?

Equinoxes occur twice a year. The one in March is also referred to as the Vernal equinox, the one in September the autumnal equinox. Simply put, it's the day during which the sun rises and sets directly above the equator. To better understand why this phenomenon occurs and what it signals, it helps to understand how the Earth rotates around the Sun. Rather than circling the Sun at a right angle the Earth's rotational axis has a 23.5 degree tilt relative to the Sun. This means that for half of the Earth's rotation or half the year either the northern or southern hemispheres are tilted towards the sun, warming that region and resulting in the changing seasons. The equinoxes are those two times during the year when neither the northern or southern hemispheres are tiled towards the sun. For about a day both the northern and southern hemispheres receive the same amounts of sunlight.

The shift by the earth means the Northern hemisphere will start receiving more sunlight and gradually grow warmer until June 21st, the Summer solstice, when the tilt of the Earth reaches its zenith and the Southern hemisphere again begins tilting closer to the sun until the Fall equinox when the Northern hemisphere begins to tilt back towards the sun and so on and so on.
So, if you're not aware IT'S NOW SPRING IN THE NORHTERN HEMISPHERE AND FALL IN THE SOUTHERN.

But, you probably knew that already.

Is The Troika To Blame For The Cyprus Contagion Fear?

    by IBTimesTV 207 views

Wall Street fell on Monday for a second consecutive session after a proposed bailout for Cyprus ignited fears that it could threaten the stability of banks in the Eurozone.

The controversial Cyprus bailout, that puts a levy on bank deposits, rattled the global financial markets. Early in the day, the Dow Jones industrial average tumbled more than 100 points to an intraday low of 14,404.21.The Dow Jones, Standard & Poor's 500 index and Nasdaq Composite initially fell in early trade, however, stocks briefly rebounded in the afternoon.

Cyprus, now the fifth nation in the Eurozone to seek a bailout since the debt crisis began three years ago, has delayed voting on a plan to tax bank accounts to help pay for the country's bailout.

The Cypriot government and officials from the troika of lendersโ€”the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fundโ€” are seeking ways to make a series of cuts to the size of a bailout package.

Under a plan backed by the Troika, Cyprus is proposing to levy a one-time tax on savers as part of a $13 billion bailout that would put the burden of rescuing the country on bank depositors, according to MoneyWatch.

The proposed plan is the first time during the Eurozone debt crisis that depositors in any member country have been required to take a cut on their bank holdings, MarketWatch reported.
The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI dropped 62.05 points, or 0.43 percent, to 14,452.06 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX slipped 8.60 points, or 0.55 percent, to 1,552.10. The Nasdaq Composite Index .IXIC fell 11.48 points, or 0.35 percent, to close at 3,237.59.

The Dow has gained around 10.3 percent for the year, while the S&P 500 is up 8.8 percent for 2013 and is currently on track to post its best quarter in a year.

St. Patrick's Day Hangover Cures Plus A Big Drinking Myth

    by IBTimesTV 165 views

The first and most simple hangover cure is of course to drink in moderation. If that's not an option you can prepare yourself for a night of drinking by eating fatty foods before you imbibe. The fats will line your stomach and slow down the absorption of alcohol.

Drink vodka. A study published in the journal 'Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research' found that vodka gave participants less of a hangover than Bourbon. They attribute this to the higher amount of toxins, called congeners, in dark liquors created by the fermenting process.

Drinking alcohol dehydrates you and that is the chief cause of hangovers. So drinking water before, during after a night of heavy drinking is the best way to cure a hangover. Energy and sports drinks with electrolytes are also a good idea.

But, if you're still feeling terrible the morning after a night of heavy drinking the best thing to do is to nourish your body with nutrient rich foods like fruits and vegetables.
One common remedy is the so-called 'hair of the dog'. The idea is that the morning after a heavy night of drinking, drinking a little more will trick the body out of the hangover temporarily. However, we weren't able to find any science to back up the claims, so we can't recommend this method.

Last, but not least, get lots of sleep.

U.S. Unemployment Hits four-Year Low: Preview Of Next Week's Economic Calendar

    by IBTimesTV 161 views

Wall Street surged again on Friday, hitting yet another closing high, after data showed that U.S. employers stepped up hiring in February.

The unemployment rate fell to a four year-low even after taxes increases and spending cuts from the fiscal cliff crisis.

But December and January's employment data was actually revised to show 15,000 fewer jobs added than previously reported, however the details of the report showed that construction added the most jobs since March 2007.

The jobs report today helped continue to propel the Dow to record highs.

Next week's economic calendar includes key events such as euro zone industrial production and employment data.

On Wednesday we'll see February retail sales and January inventories data and for Thursday, weekly jobless claims are released.

Dow Closes At Third Straight Record High, But How Long Can the Streak Last?

    by IBTimesTV 162 views

Jonathan Corpina, senior managing partner at Meridian Equity Partners weighs in with IBTimes TV on the latest economic data and a preview of Friday's unemployment rate.

U.S. stocks edged up in early trade on Thursday, after jobless claims data suggested a pick-up in the labor market recovery. The Dow hit record highs this week, hitting levels not seen since October 2007, shortly before the Great Recession began. The Dow hit an intraday record for now the third session in a row, climbing as high as 14,345 after the Dow surged to a record on Tuesday.

China has overtaken the US as the world's largest net importer of oil, the Financial Times reported.

The European Central Bank announced this morning that they were keeping interest rates unchanged even though last week unemployment in Europe hit a new all-time high. The ECB held its benchmark rate at a record low and the Bank of England stuck with its target for quantitative easing, while the Bank of Japan dismissed calls that it begin asset purchases.

The number of Americans filing claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell last week to a seasonally adjusted 340,000, and it was the second straight week of declines.

Investors are looking ahead towards Friday's unemployment rate as analysts expect no key changes on February's nonfarm payrolls and unemployment. Economists are predicting that the Labor Department will report a gain of 160, 000 non-farm payroll figures, and that the unemployment rate will stay at 7.9 percent.

The Future Of China's Growth And Next Week's Economic Calendar

    by IBTimesTV 225 views

Kenneth Polcari, Director at O'Neil Securities, weighs in on the latest global manufacturing data, how growth in emerging markets is declining and finally a preview of next week's economic calendar.
China's February official purchasing managers' index (PMI) came in at 50.1, slightly below a 50.2 Reuters poll consensus and the 50.4 posted in January. Another survey indicated the final HSBC PMI fell to 50.4 after seasonal adjustments from January's two-year high of 52.3, in line with a flash reading.
The European Union's statistics office reported Friday that unemployment in the Eurozone rose to an all-time high in January, with an estimated 19 million people in the bloc out of work.
Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, announced on Friday that January's unemployment rate rose to 11.9 percent in the 17 countries sharing the euro, which was up from 11.8 percent in December, with another 201,000 people out of work.
There are multiple central-bank meetings next week in Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and Japan, holding separate meetings, and markets will watch for any clues of new policy announcements, or signs that central bankers will take actions later in the year.
China's manufacturing numbers were slightly above the contraction levels, yet still failed to beat estimates. Out of the four major emerging markets, known as the BRICs, including Brazil, Russia, India and China, India is actually the only one continuing to pick up growth. Now, U.S. corporations saw profits at their operations in China decline for the second year in a row, and because of this, companies are saying they moving some manufacturing out of China and bringing it to the U.S.

As Waiting Period Expires for ICE Acquisition of NYSE, What Will Happen To The Trading Floor?

    by IBTimesTV 152 views

The IntercontinentalExchange announced in December that it's agreed to acquire NYSE Euronext in a deal that would create one of the largest global exchange groups.

IntercontinentalExchange (NYSE: ICE) and NYSE Euronext (NYSE: NYX) said Tuesday that the expiration of the waiting period in connection with the proposed acquisition ended on Friday, February 15 2012, which satisfies one of the regulatory requirements for completion of the merger. The transaction remains subject to additional regulatory requirements with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, including competition approvals in Europe.

Merging NYSE Euronext with the second-largest futures market emphasizes the diminishing influence of the 220-year-old New York Stock Exchange as it's seen its share of trading in stocks listed on the exchange decline to 21 percent from 82 percent in the mid 1980's.

But what will happen to the future of the historic trading floor?

Will A Looming 'Currency War' Also Lead To A Global Trading War?

    by IBTimesTV 979 views

Wall Street edged higher in early trading after data showed that consumer sentiment rose in the U.S.
and manufacturing activity expanded in the New York region.

Also in the spotlight, finance ministers and central bankers from the Group of 20 countries are meeting
in Moscow against a backdrop of rising currency tensions.

Jonathan Corpina, Senior Managing Partner at Meridian Equity Partners, will weigh in about the latest
positive data coming out of the U.S., as well as if a possible currency war could also lead to trading wars.

Consumer sentiment in the U.S. jumped in February, rebounding after a disappointing showing the
    previous two months.

The University of Michigan preliminary index of consumer sentiment climbed to 76.3 this month from
73.8 in January, beating analyst expectations of a projected rise to 74.8, according to the median
    forecast in a Bloomberg survey.

G20 officials struggled to find a common form of words on currency manipulation ahead of a summit on
Friday where divisions within the group over growth versus austerity looked set to flare back to life.

A draft prepared for the Group of 20 finance leaders will omit part of this week's Group of Seven
statement declaring fiscal and monetary policy must only be used for domestic economic aims,
    according to Reuters.

Central banks in Japan and the United States have policies of buying government bonds to boost credit
to the economy, and Japan's government also wants to additionally stimulate the economy fiscally.

Such policies have led to a weakening of the dollar and the yen, making exports of these countries more
competitive, in what some policy makers refer to as "currency wars".

They G20 Summit will take place in Moscow for the first time this weekend, and officials are expected
to discuss whether the loose monetary policies of the U.S., Japan, Britain and the euro zone depart from
the group's commitment to market-driven exchange rates.

Falguni And Shane Peacock Rock The Runway At New York Fashion Week

    by IBTimesTV 84 views

Designing duo Falguni and Shane Peacock rocked the runway at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York for their fourth season running.

The brand is known for its dramatic, futuristic, embellished looks, and the Fall 2013 collection was no exception.

The models seemed empowered by an armor of silver bodices that accentuated classic femininity through peplum shapes.

Silhouettes reminiscent of the 40's were decorated with a sophisticated mix of lace and unique carnation cotton suede.

The edgy pair designed a collection full of sparkle, shine, and 3D optical illusions through the use of metallic jacquard.

The looks featured luxurious silk velvets in dark hues balanced by bursts of carnation, sea green, and cobalt.
