Researcher Captures Rare Footage of Wild Baby Gorillas Playing in Rwanda

Twin mountain gorilla babies rolling and playing in the rain forest of Rwanda are the subject of a short video segment captured by a San Diego Zoo Global scientist during a recent visit. San Diego Zoo Global is sending the video out as a cute reminder of the appeal of this endangered species and the importance of conserving gorillas and other species for future generations. The video was taken by Oliver Ryder, Ph.D. at Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda earlier this year. The gorillas are part of the Hirwa group, one of ten groups that are being monitored and protected by Park staff. Dr. Ryder was in Rwanda meeting with local officials to discuss the establishment of future projects in the area that would benefit this and other species. http://www.sandiegozooglobal.org

Cutest Baby Koala Named Kirra!

Since January, the San Diego Zoo has been sharing the growth and development of a female koala baby, called a joey, on its online Koala Cam. Viewers have been able to watch as she emerged from the pouch, tried her first bites of eucalyptus and became more independent, venturing farther away from her mother, Niriah. Today, the 10-month-old joey reached another milestone: she has a name.
For two weeks, visitors to the San Diego Zoo's Koalafornia website were able to vote for their favorite name for the joey. More than 4,000 people voted and the most popular name was Kirra, a word for "leaf" in the Aboriginal language.
Keepers provided four names for the public to vote on and Kirra received 40 percent of the vote. The name is fitting, as the young koala started eating eucalyptus leaves at an early age. Kirra is the third joey born to her mother, Nariah, and can be seen in a temporary exhibit with females Orana and Sooki. Two jaguar siblings at the San Diego Zoo turned one today and received a birthday party complete with cake, banners and presents. One-year-old brother, Tikal, and his sister, Maderas, came charging out of their bedrooms with mother, Nindiri, and immediately knocked over their birthday cake and tore open empty boxes wrapped as presents.

100 Days Old! Panda Cub 12th Exam

Our panda cub weighs 9.2 pounds and is more than 23 inches long from nose to tail. During his 12th exam, the cub wiggled and tried to crawl despite the staff's best efforts to hold him still to try to get accurate measurements.

Endangered Clapper Rails Released

The endangered marsh birds were hatched at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and Living Coast Discovery Center.
