SpaceGhostPurrp is the latest artist to record a live performance as part of the label's ongoing 4AD Sessions series.

A recent addition to the roster, SpaceGhostPurrp put out Mysterious Phonk - a compilation of some of his early work and his first commercial release - back in June. Fleshing out most tracks and mastering them for the first time, he showed the wider world that not only was he worthy of the hype his early mixtapes had created, but was also primed for the bigger stage; "his singular sound gives the project a wonderful sense of cohesiveness and gels Purpp's vision together with a maturity beyond his young years." (HipHopDX)

Taking place in late Spring at Brooklyn Fire Proof in Williamsburg (an arts complex named to honour Brooklyn Fire Proof Sash and Door Company, a factory that had thrived at it's location at the turn of the last century), this 4AD Session is the third to be shot by director Robert Semmer. Revisiting three tracks from Mysterious Phonk, the intention of the shoot was to capture an intimate portrait of an artist who to date has favoured a more low key profile. Taking cues from the shadowy intrigue of Purrp's own Raider Klan collective, the rapper/producer is fore-grounded against a smoke-flecked backdrop, its monochrome intensity in-keeping with the claustrophobic nature of the music. Addressing the camera directly with a compelling intensity, the fully mic'd room details his lucid, hypnotic verses. A flexible approach to language - both written and spoken - is key to Purrp's aesthetic and the session highlights his interest in phonetics, the sound of the words themselves as important as their meaning. The result is syrup-thick head music, that nods to hip hop fore fathers, but also leans against conventions to formulate his own murky universe. Consequently it's unlike any 4AD Session to date.

With his second release for Planet Mu this year, 'Dream On' is more of a full-length outing for Ital aka Daniel Martin-McCormick and a much more substantial record than the popular and critically acclaimed 'Hive Mind'.
On 'Dream On' Ital takes his experimentation with house and techno forms even further, creating impressionistic deconstructions from the tropes of early house and techno. Sunny chords, laid back drum shuffle and rhythmic vocal loops are picked apart and threaded with a rich psychodrama of delirious textures, tidal chords and uneasy roughness and dissonance.
Having spent over 20 weeks on the road since the completion of 'Hive Mind', 'Dream On' reflects the raw energy of the live show and the touring mindset: the heady, dream-feel of house, cut with both dub's fracturing smear and an understanding of the power of distortion, honed from years working in DIY and noise.
'Despot' starts the album with a trancey bassline punctuated with off-key vocal stabs, the form of the track brutally prized apart with pitch-shifting seasick chords. It's the longest track and and a powerful opener. 'Boi's' mix of stuttering vocal loops, aqueous chords and frantic drums is tainted with sorrow and loss. It's got a nervous energy, always feeling like it's going to topple in on itself, lapsing from ravey propulsion into nauseated hiss and back again.
'Eat Shit (Waterfalls Mix)' is broken and distressed techno in miniature, making the most of distortion and echo to create shimmer and splinters of noise over rough, murky percussion.
The dark center of the album, 'Enrique', strips things back to a cavernous ambience with molasses-slow vocals and a heartbeat drum, building into pulsing tones and scratching noise pulled across the spectrum. Another miniature, 'Housecapella', is deep house smudged and deconstructed into weightlessness; it's over before it begins to drag you in.
'What a Mess' sounds like music rotting; running epic, wilting chords, soaring melodies and hysterical vocals through curdling effects. Following this year's hugely critically acclaimed new album Lucifer, LA duo Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis, AKA Peaking Lights released Lucifer In Dub -- a special collection of dub edits conjured up by Coyes himself which was released through Weird World. 'Beautiful Dub', the album's opening track, is a remixed version of Lucifer's 'Beautiful Son', the track inspired the couple's new born son. Although the dub influences were already there in Lucifer, Coyes had this to say about the ...in Dub album and how the difference in production helped get the sound they desired:

"Both of us really love how Lucifer in Dub turned out. We wanted it to have a different feel with the mastering; Shawn Reed of Night-People who put out our early recordings introduced us to Sonic Boom who we met while on tour and later worked with mastering some of our remixes. He really understood the sound we were after, there was no compromise in the low end, he gets our zone - warm; lush, round, heavy on the psychedelics."

The video was put together by Peaking Lights' friend Mike Seely in San Francisco, and features swirling psychedelic surf images which work effortlessly with the track.
