Moonlight was inspired by the great composer Ludwig Van Beethoven and his masterpiece "Moonlight Sonata," written for piano. It was written for piano, of course, because the electric cello had yet to be invented...
"I used both of my 5-string electric cellos (one tuned extra high and one extra low) and the acoustic cellos to give this piece a unique feel and a high level of emotion.
I used another melody from Beethoven -- try and guess what it is (guess before you scroll down to the credits where it is listed!) It starts at 1:21 and reoccurs throughout the tune. This melody happened spontaneous in the studio and saved the tune from a bad case of writer's block." -Steven Sharp Nelson

(HD) Carl Orff - Carmina Burana | O Fortuna | Berliner Philharmoniker, Sir Simon Rattle
by lviscarlos 34,426 views
"Everything I have written to date can be destroyed. With Carmina Burana my collected works begin." Carl Orff writting to his publishers, Schott
"O Fortuna
velut luna
statu variabilis,
semper crescis
aut decrescis;
vita detestabilis
nunc obdurat
et tunc curat
ludo mentis aciem,
egestatem,
potestatem
dissolvit ut glaciem.
Sors immanis
et inanis,
rota tu volubilis,
status malus,
vana salus
semper dissolubilis,
obumbrata
et velata
michi quoque niteris;
nunc per ludum
dorsum nudum
fero tui sceleris.
Sors salutis
et virtutis
michi nunc contraria,
est affectus
et defectus
semper in angaria.
Hac in hora
sine mora
corde pulsum tangite
quod per sortem
sternit fortem,
mecum omnes plangite!
The text for Carmina Burana is drawn from the collection of sometimes bawdy twelfth-century Latin and German Poems written by the monks of Benediktbeuem.
Carl Orff repudiated its conservative trainning through an early infactuation with the music of Debussy and Schoenberg. In the 1920s, he began to immerse himself in the works of Monteverdi and other seventeenth-century masters.
A joyful celebration welcoming the New Year with one of the best orchestras in the world. The Gala from Berlin 2004 presents the outstanding Berliner Philharmoniker, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle with Carl Orffs well known "Carmina Burana". -

The Sixteen Miserere Mei Deus
by EtudeFidem 70,427 views
from my quick web search, this music is written by Allegri, in setting of Psalm 51 and used only at special Mass in Sistine Chapel. It was forbidden to public for reproduction untill Mozart at age of 14, transcribed the whole music in 2 listening. Instead of excommunication, Mozart was praised by the pope and the ban was lifted for rest of the world to hear.

All of the sounds you hear in this tune were created by the piano; electric, steel, acoustic & carbon fiber cellos; vocals; and a tambourine.
This video was filmed at Bryce Canyon National Park in cooperation with the Garfield County Office of Tourism. For more information go to http://www.BryceCanyonCountry.com. Thanks to Bruce Fullmer and Mark Wade for their assistance in location scouting and project management. See more of Bryce Canyon in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQA-qgjmfsw
Story behind the song:
Have you ever awakened with a melody in your head and you don't know how it got there? That was the beginning of our PianoGuys' version of David Guetta's "Titanium (feat. Sia)." Paul especially loved this tune -- he lobbied us to arrange the song, but after we could not find a way to begin the arrangement. Every time we tried it just didn't flow. We also were concerned that the hook of the tune was nothing but the beat :-) and lacked a lead melody, which would make it more difficult to convey with piano and cello. Steve woke one morning and couldn't get a melody out of his head. It was Gabriel Faure's "Pavane" -- a hauntingly beautiful melody that weaves in and out of richly sequenced harmonies and fluid counter-melodies. It had been a favorite of his as a child, but he hadn't heard it for years. In the studio that same morning we tried the melody over the top of the chorus of David' Guetta's Titanium and it was like witnessing a reunion of two childhood friends. The main melody of the Pavane and its supporting chords, transposed and changed stylistically to mimic Guetta, also fit nicely as the intro we had been searching for. And we thought since Guetta and Faure are both French it must have been meant to be! :-)
If you're not familiar with "Pavane" Listen to a version of Bobby McFerrin singing it with La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN-cY-f8Yqs (As a boy Steve heard this very version live in concert and it evidently had an indelible impression on him!)
Classical music is such a big part of who we, ThePianoGuys, are. You can hear it in everything we write. We love pairing it with the music of today.
This was the most difficult music video to set the "stage" for thus far. We considered so many locations -- a copper mine, a steel mill, an industry factory, a mountaintop ski resort, a wildflower meadow, a desert bluff, and many others. As you know we love putting pianos and cellos in crazy places (a common comment is 'how the heck did they get the piano up there??') -- places that show off breathtakingly beautiful landscapes. When Mark Wade with Garfield County's Department of Tourism called and offered full creative access to its national parks we abandoned all of our tabled ideas and focused on showcasing Bryce Canyon National Park -- an incredible place of raw beauty and geological history written in rock. It is a place like no other. We feel so blessed to have been able to film there.
This video features a NEW STEEL cello made by Dawson Swan: Thor II -- with significant improvements over Thor I. It's lighter, easier to play and it looks awesome! Dawson is an incredible artist! Check his website out here: http://dawesome.net. Thank you again, Dawson!

Earth Song - Frank Ticheli
by Chris Young 199,277 views
Sing, Be, Live, See
This dark stormy hour,
the wind, it stirs.
The scorched Earth cries out in vain.
Oh war and power, you blind and blur. The torn heart cries out in pain.
But music and singing have been my refuge,
and music and singing shall be my light.
A light of song, shining strong.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah.
Through darkness and pain and strife,
I'll sing, I'll be, live, see.
Peace.

Story behind the song:
Ask any cellist. They'll tell you about what's it's like to play the cello part of Pachebel's Canon in D. It's the same 8 notes over and over and over again. The good news is, it's easy to memorize. The bad news is you don't know when to stop. There's a rumor floating around that says Pachelbel either died while writing it, never finishing the cello part, or that he dated a cellist and it did NOT go well. This arrangement is dedicated to all the cellists that have fallen asleep while playing this song...or at least wanted to fall asleep. Steven Sharp Nelson actually began writing this arrangment while bored at a wedding.
Ahem...all the bitter cello-malice aside, Pachelbel's Canon in D (written in the 1600's) has stood the test of time -- celebrated as the most recognizable piece of classical music. We like to call it the "one-hit wonder of the 1600's." It really is an amazingly-catchy piece of music. It demonstrates the musical form of the "canon," when a melody is played and then repeated in a round by other voices. (watch how the melodies are passed from one cello to the next - right to left)
ALL THE SOUNDS YOU HEAR WERE CREATED BY THE CELLO -- bowing, plucking, strumming, and beating the cello any way possible.
This arrangement was written before ThePianoGuys posted our first video, "Michael Meets Mozart" - but we hesitated filming it because of how involved the idea was. We've never used "extras" before! And the thought of staging a wedding, directing extras, and cloning Steve 4 times all in one video-shoot made us justifiably anxious. So we put it off. And put it off. And then put if off some more. One day Al van der Beek was skimming through our thousands of messages on Facebook and happened to see one with the title "wedding" in the subject line. A woman emailed us about an opportunity to film at a big magazine-spread wedding photo shoot. It was perfect--they would have the location, flowers, actors, and even a cake. Everything we'd need. To make a long story short, we excitedly scheduled our video shoot for the same day as their photo shoot, but a few days prior to the day it fell apart. After much discussion we determined to move forward on faith that we could still work it out. Paul Anderson marshaled all sorts of connections and called on whomever he could and by nothing short of a miracle in a matter of days the wedding was all planned -- complete with a beautiful location, stunning decor, sharp tuxedos, fancy flowers, a photogenic bride and groom, 60 energetic guests, and an iced cake!
The piece at the beginning that is just ending is Steven Sharp Nelson's 4-cello arrangement of "Thanks Be To Thee" (att. to Handel). Dowanload the full MP3 here: http://thepianoguys.com/newstore/tender-mercy-digital-singles-mp3.html?___SID=U (TRACK 7 on the album "Tender Mercies"

Paul Dyer, harpsichord / director .
G.-F. Händel ( 1685 - 1759)
Aria "Ombra mai fù " ( 1 Act ) from the Opera "Serse" (HWV 40), first performed in London at the King's Theatre, Haymarket , on 15 April 1738.
The libretto is adapted by an unknown hand from that by Silvio Stampiglia for an earlier opera of the same name by Giovanni Bononcini in 1694. Stampiglia's libretto was itself based on one by Nicolò Minato that was set by Francesco Cavalli in 1654.
The main role of the Persian King Xerxes sang Gaetano Majorano (Caffarelli), it was his first and only one season (1737 / 38 ) on the London stage, and Händel composed for his new Primo Uomo the roles of Faramondo ( premiered on 3th. January 1738, 8 performances) , Serse ( only 5 performances) and in pasticcio "Alessandro severo".
Unlike his other operas for London, Händel included comic (buffo) elements in "Serse" , but this Opera wasn´t an success because of " the libretto not old enough " and " the music too modern ".
Caffarelli left London quite disappointed.

The idea originated when Tel Stewart was editing THE CELLO SONG here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ry4BzonlVlw. As a joke he decided to add light sabers to Steven Sharp Nelson's bow during the outtakes. Fans cried out for more. Al van der Beek and Steven Sharp Nelson storyboarded the song and the video concept while they were scouting locations for MOONLIGHT http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRVvFYppU0w&feature=relmfu. But it was Steven Sharp Nelson's son Eli (6) that was the true inspiration for the project -- his enthusiasm for Star Wars, light sabers, and watching his daddy wield one while playing cello fueled the project continually.
We announced CELLO WARS on September 19, 2011 thinking we'd be able to deliver on our promise within a few weeks. We had NO IDEA. 70 days later, more than 7,000 frames, 72 audio tracks, 24 hours of filming through the night in front of a green screen, the most props and costumes we've ever used, several broken bows and strings, and over 1,000 hours of editing and rendering -- we felt like we had taken on the entire EMPIRE!
Tel Stewart is THE MAN. He is the reason this worked. He is the man behind the green screen -- behind the editing bay -- behind all the cool effects. He had to edit every single frame in order to make the light sabers work (a total of over 7,000 frames)! We now have a Piano Guys Hall of Fame and he was recently the first inductee.

I Go Among Trees by Giselle Wyers
by thestonessang 4,636 views
Poetry by Wendell Berry. Performed by University of Washington Chamber Singers, Geoffrey Boers, dir.
I go among trees and sit still.
All my stirrings become quiet around me like circles on water.
My tasks lie in their places asleep like cattle.
Then what is afraid of me comes and lives awhile in my sight.
What it fears in me, leaves me, and the fear of me leaves it,
It sings and I hear its song.
Then what I am afraid of comes. I live for awhile in its sight.
What I fear in it leaves it, and the fear of it leaves me.
I,t sings and I hear its song.
After days of labor, mute in my consternations,
I hear my song at last, and I sing it.
The day turns, the trees move. -

Enter Into the Mystery (The Tree of Life)

Version 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3fSUBC3AQU
A cobbling together of clips from Malick's magnum opus The Tree of Life, set to my favorite song from the film, John Tavener's "Funeral Canticle."
The Funeral Canticle is one of two works inspired by the passing of the composer's father, Kenneth. The other, Eternal Memory, is a co-memorial to Tavener's father and to the late Lady Diana, Princess of Wales. While the ruminations of that work are more secularly philosophical -- it takes its text from William Blake's Auguries of Innocence and Eternity -- the Funeral Canticle is more explicitly religious, having been prepared for the interdenominational funeral service that his father had requested. Its texts include the kliros from the traditional Orthodox funeral service, interspersed with verses composed by Tavener's longtime friend, collaborator (Mary of Egypt, Akathist), and spiritual guide, Mother Thekla of the Monestary at Normanby. As is the case with many of Tavener's other works, an overarching motto permeates the piece. Here, it is a solemn chant in Greek: "Remember eternal things."
Though a sense of stasis pervades the work -- for there is no hurry when distances are traversed over eternities -- each sectional division is marked by a distinct kind of calm. The opening motto is given in what sounds like Byzantine chant; the subsequent lines, "We are born as naked infants, Then baptized into Christ our God," are set in delicate, sinuous parallel chords; the kliros that follows is set in rich chord progressions overlaid with solemn repetitions, the sustained tones in the upper voices hovering over a restlessly ponderous bass. The Greek chant returns, followed again by a lush texture of parallel thirds and a rich Alleluia passage. The warm harmonies of the kliros return, followed by another Greek chant, and another verse: "Grant O Lord in love unceasing ... rest among the faithful, in the life beyond compare." After the Alleluia, the final iteration of the kliros brings the work to a close.
One senses a deliberate (and to those familiar with Tavener's work, expected) attempt to create an air of timelessness in this work. There seems to be a circular trajectory to the repeating textural patterns: the liturgical and ancient sounds of the Greek chant give way to the parallel harmonies, which are supplanted by the rich chords of the kliros. Law, theology, speculation seem to fade and blend into the higher reality of the eternal unknown; material objects and mortal ideas, "the idols of the world," disappear in the wake of "eternal things." Tavener has constructed a terrestrial musical frame, made of simple signs and symbols, through which to view existence from a celestial perspective. [Allmusic.com]
A stirring piece from a metaphysical feast of a film. If you haven't seen it, you must. Contemplate the vastness of the universe and the strangeness and beauty of human beings. Enter into the mystery. -

All of the sounds you hear were created by cello, piano, and vocal textures
This video was all filmed at outdoor locations located within a 20-mile radius in Southern Utah. No green screens were used in the making of this music video. Read about the location miracle here: http://thepianoguys.com/no-such-thing-as-luck/
Story behind the song:
Since the beginning of The Piano Guys, "Lord of the Rings" has been our most requested work. As we reach one million subscribers we wanted to dedicate this arrangement to our "subs." This was an intimidating project -- encompassing the power and the beauty of the many musical themes throughout the movies; capturing the emotion and the "epic" nature of the story; and all with a few cellos, a piano, and a couple Canon 5D Mark IIs. We normally write our tunes during intense compositional binges -- the bulk of our songs have been written within the period of a few days. This one was different. It was a drawn-out process during which we studied the music of The Lord of Rings, contemplated what themes to incorporate, how they could tell the story by flowing from one to the other. We also spent a lot of time finding new ways to imitate instruments from various sections of the orchestra using Steve's cellos -- from the brass section through the woodwind section to the percussion section.
We love the story of The Lord of the Rings. It is a tale that has spiritual meaning for us. We love its messages -- that "even the smallest person can change the course of the future," that "there's good in this world and it's worth fighting for," "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us" ... and that everyone should have a "second breakfast." =) We love the poignant depiction of loyalty between the Fellowship of the Ring (we even included the "Fellowship" theme three times - at 0:18, 3:58 and at the end of the arrangement - to feel like a common thread in the music as it is in the story.) We wanted to paint these messages musically as vividly as possible. Like so many things in the creative realm, and to paraphrase Mr. Bilbo Baggins, the hardest part was the first step. After a brief introduction of the Hobbit Theme and Fellowship Theme (arguably the most relevant musical moments) we felt strongly that we needed to begin with the deeply touching melody that serves as the soundtrack to Arwen's vision of her future son (in the extended version of Return of the King). That gave way to a Divinely-led journey from the Shire and Rivendell through Isengard and Rohan to Gondor's victory over Mordor. We endeavored to represent each of the major allies and opposing forces in the story:
The Elves 0:44
The Ents 1:48
Rohan 2:08
Mordor and Isengard 2:32
Hobbits 3:08
Gondor 4:11
(There's also a little hint at Shelob -- see if you can find it) =)
After the music was complete we set out to find the right locations. We were determined to stay within Utah to see how well we could portray the incredible locations of Lord of the Rings without traveling too far from home. Paul, while driving with his family in St. George, noticed a grove of trees off to the side of the road across from an elementary school and convinced everyone in the car to hop out and take a look. It was as if they had stepped into another world...It's hard to believe the main locations you see in this video are just a few yards off busy roads in Southern Utah (with the exception of the mountain scenes, of course!) We didn't have as much time as we would have liked on this shoot -- the entire video was filmed within 24 hours! It's a miracle that it turned out. =) The scenes in our video are not meant to exactly "match" the Lord of The Rings locations, but rather allude to them abstractly.
If you've read this far you are a TRUE MELLON!! =)
We hope you enjoy this! Please "LIKE," share, comment, and subscribe!

by CourtsCorner 323,022 views
Hey everybody! First video for this new channel! Sorry that this isn't AS interesting as other videos, but it's the ACTUAL recording of the song composed by Eric Whitacre.
Hope you enjoy!
Lyrics:
Night with the eyes of a horse that trembles in the night,
Night with eyes of water in the field asleep
Is in your eyes, a horse that trembles is in
Your eyes of secret water.
Eyes of shadow-water,
Eyes of well-water,
Eyes of dream-water.
Silence and solitude,
Two little animals moon-led,
Drink in your eyes,
Drink in those waters.
If you open your eyes, night opens doors of musk,
The secret kingdom of the water opens
Flowing from the center of the night.
And if you close your eyes,
A river, a silent and beautiful current, fills you from within,
Flows forward, forward, darkens you:
Night brings its wetness to beaches in your soul. -

Story behind the song:
The American Heritage Lyceum Philharmonic (Youth Orchestra) and its director, Kayson Brown, approached us with this idea. We loved it. It combined two of the things we are working to accomplish -- inviting people to classical music and inspiring young musicians. Steven Sharp Nelson had soloed with the orchestra the previous year and loved the spirit and the talent that the orchestra showed at such young ages (ages 13-18!) Together we developed the concept of "Beethoven's 5 Secrets," combining OneRepublic's tune "Secrets" with melodies and moments from all four movements of Beethoven's 5th Symphony.
We used 5 different melodies from the 4 movements of Beethoven's 5th Symphony (not including the "bridge" the orchestra plays in the middle). Try to guess where they are and where they come from!
What are Beethoven's secrets? He had many. His most prominent secret that he desperately tried to keep from the public and that caused him to be considered extremely eccentric, irritable, and hermit-like was his "weakness." He was deaf during most of his life. Imagine that...one of the greatest composers that ever lived could hardly hear. And yet, he wrote his life's greatest works after becoming deaf. He believed that art itself had "secrets" that had to be "forced into" in order to obtain art's highest level. There is no doubt Beethoven discovered many of the "secrets" of art -- people all over the world enjoy them every day. He was a true master of music, blessed by God. This piece and video are dedicated to him.
Perform "Beethoven's 5 Secrets" and the entire Beethoven Symphony No. 5 with Steven Sharp Nelson at Lyceum Music Festival this year! Work up-close and personal with Steven and other amazing professional musicians like the concertmaster of the London Symphony and Rotterdam Orchestra. Advanced players ages 13-21 are invited to audition. Visit http://www.LyceumMusicFestival.com or http://american-heritage.org/music/orchestra for details

Story behind the song:
It was impossible to turn down an invitation from one of our fans (Brad and Andrea Harker) to visit a private race track in the middle of the Nevada desert just outside of Las Vegas. We took our cameras with us and a new tune that we created just for the occasion. Thanks to a number of subscribers for the suggestion to remake this epic classical piece by Carl Orff! It was one of three possibilities we were considering when writing with the race track in mind. In the end it was no contest; especially when we read the English transition of the Latin lyrics in the piece -- which speak of fate like a "wheel" and a "driving force!" Our version of O Fortuna was so much fun to create that it was done in a matter of three days (we couldn't let ourselves do anything else until it was finished). It consists of 6 piano tracks, 43 acoustic cello tracks, 3 percussion tracks, and 48 vocal tracks.
A special thanks to Orin Harker (He owns the white car) , along with his wife Val, who hosted us, gave us all the ride of our lives, and taught us about the coolness of Radical Racing! They definitely went the "extra mile" with us in so many ways -- we are indebted to them. They even treated us to a steak dinner...good thing too, because we would have just had some cheap pizza! =)

Check out our special Christmas version of this video here: http://youtu.be/ugV6QGcafEE
We love the Holiday Season. Why? It's a great excuse to be extra nice to each other. =) ... And we love Christmas music, lights, presents, and the excitement of our sleepless children anticipating the advent of Christmas day. We know there are many out there who do not celebrate Christmas or believe in what it may represent. This song is not meant to exclude anyone. We hope this song is an opportunity to reflect on everything we are blessed with in life -- family, a beautiful earth, a place to rest our head, the warmth of the sun. The lyrics of this piece speak of being "ransomed" from captivity. In general terms, at some point or another in our lives we find ourselves at the receiving end of a "ransom" -- a rescue by someone or something -- even as simple as a note from a friend, a hug from a child, a much-needed vacation, or the unconditional affection of a loyal dog. That is what this song represents to us. People may define the "rescue" moments in life differently, but the meaning of the moments remain the same. To many, including us, the story of The Savior is the sweetest and most priceless "ransom" of all. To Him we dedicate this song.
And with this video we wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a bright future filled with "rescue" moments. We love you!
A thousand THANK YOUs to John Garbett and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for allowing us access to their beautiful Jerusalem Movie Set where this was filmed. We felt transported to the Holy Land as we played music and filmed there. It was an incredible experience.
And many many thanks to Marshall McDonald, an incredible friend and example who co-wrote this arrangement.

Lyrics to O Come, Emmanuel
O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
[Refrain] Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, Thou Wisdom from on high,
Who orderest all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show,
And teach us in her ways to go.
[Refrain]
O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,
And give them victory over the grave.
[Refrain]
O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
[Refrain]
O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
[Refrain]
O come, O come, great Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes on Sinai's height
In ancient times once gave the law
In cloud and majesty and awe.
[Refrain]
O come, Thou Root of Jesse's tree,
An ensign of Thy people be;
Before Thee rulers silent fall;
All peoples on Thy mercy call.
[Refrain]
O come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind;
Bid Thou our sad divisions cease,
And be Thyself our King of Peace -

Secret Garden- Song from a Secret Garden
by Gawaine687 703,512 views
This is the third song from Secret Gardens album Songs From a Secret Garden, from 1995.
"The idea of Secret Garden is one that everyone can relate to. We all have landscapes inside us, secret rooms where feelings and impressions grow as a little garden. We have individual ways of finding this garden. Some talk about it, write poems or letters, paint, or even talk a walk to reflect over life. We all have our own way. But what is common to us, is a strong emotional feeling that is an essential part of our nature. My way of dealing with this is through music, and everything I write comes from my secret garden. This simple piece had no other name than Pianopiece in C Minor for many years. But when the Secret Garden project evolved, I felt this piece could express the essence of my ideas- the simple melody strait from the heart, expressed through Fionnualas soulful, vulnerable and naked violin playing." -Rolf Lovland -

Eva Cassidy - Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Tribute to the Extraordinary Eva Cassidy ~
I discovered the profound beauty and talent of Eva Cassidy just recently while recovering from surgery. Laptop surfing, I was searching for something to take my mind off the emotional anguish and physical pain of my recent wounds. Somehow I stumbled across the videos of Eva Cassidy's Live performance at Blues Alley.
From her first notes, I was stunned and captivated. And comforted. Her musical selection, interpretation, range, enunciation, sustaining notes, phrasing, rich timbre and vocal acrobatics are exquisitely overwhelming. Her power and softness are a constant marvel. Her delivery is perfection.
The sheer beauty of her music reaches very deep inside me and yet simultaneously transports me far beyond myself.
It is rather foolish to do what I've just done (and have never before felt compelled to do); put together a simple, inadequate slide show. Especially when we are blessed with the great and haunting footage of Eva's live performance at Blues Alley. But it is my humble, yet passionate thank you to Eva Cassidy for sharing her unforgettable music, art and spirit. Her voice is a conduit to something bigger, more profound and extraordinary than words can express.
My heartfelt appreciation goes to Barbara and Hugh Cassidy for bringing Eva into our world and to Chris Biondo for believing in Eva and making it possible for us to still hear her.

Mother of God - John Tavener - Libera
by nosajeken 10,476 views
This video was created for the end of the schoolyear 2010 at EDUGO secondary school in Lochristi (Belgium).
Choir: Libera
Composer: John Tavener
Lyrics:
Mother of God, here I stand now praying,
Before this icon of your radiant brightness,
Not praying to be saved from a battlefield,
Not giving thanks, nor seeking forgiveness
For the sins of my soul, nor for all the souls.
Numb, joyless and desolate on earth,
But for her alone, whom I wholly give you.
Dutch:

ALL THE SOUNDS YOU HEAR WERE CREATED BY THE INSTRUMENTS SHOWN
The Story:
It was May of 2011... a few days after Lindsey Stirling and ThePianoGuys had each filmed their first official YouTube videos ("Spontaneous Me" and "Michael Meets Mozart"). Lindsey and Steven Sharp Nelson (cello guy) shared the stage at a concert. After the show they talked enthusiastically about a YouTube collaboration down the road. A year and a half and a million fan requests later and it's finally here! We love Lindsey Stirling! It feels like we're family -- we started on YouTube around the same time, we "grew up" in the same place, we all LOVE what we do and we're all REALLY good dancers...except for ThePianoGuys. =)
We chose the theme from "Mission: Impossible" because we thought it would be a great music video to "be ourselves" in -- to play off each other, throw in some special effects, a couple "stunts," and some slapstick! The concept for the song and video began with spy gadgets -- we wanted all of them to be string instrument parts! Then how would we pair up graceful, pro-dancer Lindsey and not-so-graceful Steve? =) It was simple. Steve had to carry around his own chair! Then the graceful/not-so-graceful thing contrasted beautifully! When Jon Schmidt (Piano Guy) was cast as the "villain" and donned an eye patch we knew we were on to something...
We composed this arrangement with the story of the video in mind -- a tense beginning building up the intrigue, a back-and-forth theme traded between violin and cello implying the partner-agent roles, lasers, the "reveal" moment of Jon, rappelling, and the hectic, scrambled ending. We wanted a little more thematic material to work with, so in addition to some original material, we merged Mission: Impossible with the first movement of Mozart's "Piano Sonata in C" (here's a recording of the original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcUh-ggBfzI). But, of course, we sped it up, transposed it into A minor and changed the time signature to 5/4! It became Jon's "villain theme." And yes, Jon is really playing THAT fast. At the end in order to create a musical feeling of "pandemonium" we wrote the piano part, reversed it and randomized the notes, tweaking them until they clicked. And for you rhythm enthusiasts, at times you'll hear a 4/4 time signature in the percussion imposed on the 5/4 timing to add to the intrigue and mayhem!
This video was in over its head before we even started filming. We planned a base-jumping scene for the beginning that didn't end up working out. The restaurant was a last-minute idea that we threw together as an intro. We were concerned that the laser and rapelling scenes would also die from over-complicatedness, but thanks to the genius and hard work of Paul Anderson and Tel Stewart we pulled them off!

Secret Garden- The Rap
by Gawaine687 20,119 views
This is the tenth song from Secret Garden's album Songs from a Secret Garden, from 1995.
"The Rap is a strange story. I originally wrote it as a Norwegian traditional tune in 4/4 time. Fionnuala Sherry and I recorded a demo of it in my home studio. It was the last song that late evening, and it had no title. Fionnuala said Lets do the rap, and ever since the title has been The Rap. One night during the recording of the CD in Iceland, I heard the tune in 5/4 time in a dream. When I woke up the next morning, I was singing it in the way I had dreamt it. The subconscious had been making a successful twist and all of a sudden, The Rap began to swing. We welcomed the Irish influence with the use of whistles, pipes, and drums. The rhythm seems complicated, changing from 5/4 to 6/4, but Im sure you will find the melody quite natural and easy to sing, without having to count!" -Rolf Lovland -

Sir Simon Rattle & the Berliner Philharmoniker: The Rite of Spring
by emiclassics 7,848 views
Pre-order at: http://www.smarturl.it/RattleROS
Digital Release: MARCH 25th, Physical Release: APRIL 8th 2013
Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker, whose Grammy® award-winning accounts of Stravinsky's Symphony in C and Symphony of Psalms are among Gramophone magazine's Top 10 Stravinsky Recordings (2011), return to the composer with a recording of the ground-breaking ballet Le Sacre du printemps, whose premiere a century ago marked a turning point in 20th century music history. The programme on this release also includes new recordings of Stravinsky's Symphonies of Wind Instruments and Apollon Musagète, another of the Russian master's breathtaking ballets.
Although the premiere of Igor Stravinsky's Le Sacre du printemps in Paris on 29th May 1913 famously set off a near-riot, the work quickly became recognised as one of the most influential musical works of the 20th century. The 100th anniversary of the premiere will be commemorated with performances all over the world in 2013 and, no doubt, with some new recordings. On record and in performance, Simon Rattle has championed the orchestral works of Stravinsky with insight and dedication over many years and this latest recording is an important addition to his Stravinsky discography. -

Bach: Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565
by Reuben Markham 1,946,336 views
Posibly my favourite Bach composition.
The Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565, is a piece of organ music composed by Johann Sebastian Bach sometime between 1703 and 1707. It is one of the most famous works in the organ repertoire, and has been used in a variety of popular media ranging from film, to video games, to rock music, and ringtones.
As indicated by the accepted title of the piece, the Toccata and Fugue is scored in D minor. It is not in dorian mode as the key signature supposes, as it was common practice in the Baroque period to write in leading tone accidentals rather than in the key signature. It begins with a single-voice flourish in the upper ranges of the keyboard, doubled at the octave. It then spirals toward the bottom, where a diminished seventh chord appears, built one note at a time. This resolves into a D major chord, taken from the parallel major mode.
The subject of the four-voice fugue is made up entirely of sixteenth notes, with an implied pedal point set against a brief melodic subject that first falls, then rises. The second entry starts in the sub-dominant key rather than the dominant key. Although unusual for a Bach fugue, this is a real answer and is appropriate following a subject that progresses from V to I and then to V below I by a leap. A straightforward dominant answer would sound atonal and odd in a Baroque piece.
After the final entry of the fugal melody, the composition resolves to the key's corresponding major, B-flat, that is held. From there, a coda is played as a cadenza much like the Toccata itself, resolving to a series of chords followed by arpeggios that progress to other paired chords, each a little lower than the one preceding, leading to the signature finale that is as recognizable as the Toccata's introduction.

Story behind the song:
This week we thought we'd reach back to our roots. We rolled the cameras in a place where they have rolled many times before -- Sundance, Utah. Steve has spent many summers there in a cabin built by his grandfather. It's also where he proposed to his wife (she said yes, by the way =) Such an incredible place of beauty and raw nature merited a piece of music that matched the setting. This arrangement of Nearer My God to Thee was the first song Steve and Al recorded together. It is based upon and inspired by an arrangement of James Stevens for 9 voices (arranged for the BYU singing group "Vocal Point"). For us music often is a spiritual experience -- a way to connect with others, with nature, and with a loving God. This video is not meant to exclude those that do not believe in God. We hope everyone can find beauty in this music and relate it to how they feel when they experience joy—whether it's joy from hiking in nature, spending time with family, serving others, or relaxing on a beach. Enjoy!

Murray Perahia - Felix Mendelssohn, Fantasy in F#- ("Scottish Sonata") Op.28
by Stravinskij0 160,767 views
Murray (Moshe) Perahia was born in the Bronx borough of New York City to a family of Sephardi Jewish origin. According to the biography on his Mozart piano sonatas CD, his first language was Ladino. The family came from Thessaloniki. His father moved to the United States in 1935; many family members perished in the Holocaust a few years later.
Perahia began studying the piano at age four with a teacher he says was "very limiting" because she made him play a single piece until it was perfect. He says his musical interests blossomed at age fifteen for reasons he can't explain, and he began to practice seriously. At seventeen, Perahia attended Mannes College, where he studied keyboard, conducting, and composition with his teacher and mentor Mieczysław Horszowski. During the summer, he also attended Marlboro, where he studied with musicians Rudolf Serkin, Alexander Schneider, and Pablo Casals, among others. He played duets for piano four hands with Serkin, who later made Perahia his assistant at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, a position he held for over a year.
In 1965 Perahia won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. In 1972, he was the first North American to win first prize at the Leeds Piano Competition, helping to cement its reputation for advancing the careers of young pianistic talent. Dr. Fanny Waterman recalls anecdotally (in Wendy Thompson's book Piano Competition: The Story of the Leeds) that Horszowski had phoned her prior to the competition, announcing that he would be the winner. Other American contestants had apparently withdrawn their applications upon hearing that Perahia would be competing.
Perahia resides in London.
]Music career
In 1973 he worked with Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears at the Aldeburgh Festival, and with fellow pianist Radu Lupu. He was co-artistic director of the Festival from 1981 to 1989.
In the 1980s, Perahia was invited to work with Vladimir Horowitz, an admirer of his art. Perahia says this had a defining influence on his pianism.
Perahia's first major recording project was the complete piano concertos by Mozart, conducted from the keyboard with the English Chamber Orchestra. In the 1980s, he also recorded all the Beethoven piano concertos, with Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
[edit]Hand injury
In 1990, Perahia suffered a cut to his right thumb, which became septic. He took antibiotics for this condition, but they affected his health. In 1992, his career was threatened by a bone abnormality in his hand causing inflammation requiring several years away from the keyboard, and a series of operations. During that time, he says, he found solace through studying the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. After being given the all-clear, he produced in the late 1990s a series of award-winning recordings of Bach's keyboard works, most notably a cornerstone rendition of the Goldberg Variations.

Russian Basso Profondo: The Lowest Voices
by johnxxx20000 1,010,249 views
Here are two short extracts of an exceptional record of Russian choral work (which includes anonymous ancient liturgical chant, popular folk songs, and music by well known Russian choral composers, such as Tchesnokov and Gretchaninov), introducing some of the lowest voices in the world. The two singers here are Vladimir Pasuikov and, with an even lower voice, Yuri Wichniakov, one of the most famous Basso Profondo, who are unique to Russian singing. Their vocal range is at least one octave below the normal bass range (think Paul Robeson). In the first extract the bass hits the low Ab1; in the second the bass hits a G1. Not only do they possess the lowest notes of any choral singer, but the soloists have such full voices that the effect is immediately striking.
Enjoy those exceptional samples of the magnificent Russian choral art! -

Like all the music of the East, it should reveal in tranquility an eternal, angelic, ecstatic breath which liberates and humanises." -

Tread lightly, she is near
Under the snow,
Speak gently, she can hear
The daisies grow.
All her bright golden hair
Tarnished with rust,
She that was young and fair
Fallen to dust.
Lily-like, white as snow,
She hardly knew
She was a woman, so
Sweetly she grew.
Coffin-board, heavy stone,
Lie on her breast,
I vex my heart alone,
She is at rest.
Peace, peace, she cannot hear
Lyre or sonnet,
All my life's buried here,
Heap earth upon it. -

Mozart Requiem Mass in D Minor XII - Communio
by ClassicalMusicGuide 118,063 views
John Eliot Gardiner conducts the English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir. This performance was filmed at the Palau de la Musica Catalana, Barcelona in Dec. 1991.
A Requiem Mass in the Roman Catholic tradition is a service designed to pray for the souls of the departed. The parts of the liturgy that are meant to be sung are what constitute all Requiem Mass compositions, including Mozart's.
The structure is as follows:
1. Introit
2. Kyrie
3. Sequence: a. Dies irae b. Tuba mirum c. Rex tremendae d. Recordare e. Confutatis f. Lacrimosa
4. Offertory: a. Domine Jesu Christe b. Hostias
5. Sanctus
6. Benedictus
7. Agnus Dei
8. Lux Aeterna
Mozart died before finishing the Requiem Mass, and his wife Constanze gave the task of finishing the work to a pupil of Mozart's named Süssmayr. From the Sanctus onward, the Requiem is the creation of Süssmayr, though he did use portions of the Introit and Kyrie for the Lux Aeterna, as requested by Mozart and as per tradition.
Despite, or maybe partially because of, the controversy surrounding this Requiem Mass, it is widely regarded as Mozart's greatest masterpiece.

ALL THE SOUNDS YOU HEAR WERE CREATED BY 105 CELLO TRACKS (and a kick drum)
Filmed all on location in Berlin, Germany
Story behind the music and the video:
What do Bach, Beethoven, Strauss, Brahms, Schumann and many more of the world's greatest classical composers have in common? They are all from Germany! While we were on tour there we wanted to drink in Germany's musical genius. It was an amazing experience. We had a chance to tour Europe twice in the same month. Prior to our first trip we had been brewing an original tune. We wanted to write a cello "hook" that could grab people and that could be looped throughout the tune. We then started building more cello loops and moments with unprecedented sounds from the acoustic (wood) cello, carbon fiber, steel, and electric cellos. When the dust settled we had four minutes of layered, edgy, sort-of dubstep-with-a-U2-influenced goody-bag -- on the electric cello loops we used some of the same cool delay effects and chord style of legend guitarists such as The Edge, Ewan Dobson, Buckethead and Yngwie Malmsteen. We were excited but a little unsettled and we couldn't figure out why. It was incomplete. We then left to Germany. We had some incredible adventures while we traveled and performed there. Upon return we had a week between our two Europe trips and we were determined to finish the song. Al and Steve were a little discouraged after having put so much work into a song and feeling good about it, and yet not knowing exactly what it needed. This is a good moment to say again how grateful we are for our supportive families. They are the true "Behind the Scenes" of ThePianoGuys that make everything possible and give us the happiness we draw our inspiration from. If it weren't for Rachel (Al's wife) and Julie (Steve's wife) this song would have failed. They gave us the encouragement and the ideas we needed to sprint the last mile. We had one day to finish it up. That morning inspiration struck Al and Steve at the same time in different places -- we still have the iPhone voice memo recordings (recorded at less than an hour apart) that we used to sing the capstone melodies that came to us. When we met at the studio we simultaneously announced we had the melody the song needed -- only to find out that the song needed BOTH melodies -- separately in different places and then together as a duet at the end of the song. As we listened to the final product we couldn't help but feel the picturesque classical vibe mixed with a pop/dubstep vibe was an abstract depiction of what we felt as traveled through and performed in Berlin. We decided just days before we were to board the plane again that the song would be called "Berlin" and that we should film it while we were in the city -- a place so richly steeped in classical heritage, history, and vitality. Filming in front of its incredible landmarks was such an unforgettable experience.
The video shoot had its share of challenges and blessings. Paul was the only cameraman—he was jetlagged and didn't get a wink of sleep the night before (he even fell asleep while filming during one of the takes -- and we still used the take!!). We didn't have much time so we filmed 13 hours straight in pure COLD and snow (we're still thawing out!) But we felt blessed by the all-day cloud cover, no problems at the locations (except the subway), an awesome cab driver, and just the right amount of time to get the shots we needed.
Thank you to all of those that helped us make this video possible! Saskia, Frankie, Garrin, Shelley, David and all the awesome peeps at Sony Germany and Sony International!

The Creation (German: Die Schöpfung) is an oratorio written between 1796 and 1798 by Joseph Haydn (H. 21/2), and considered by many to be his masterpiece. The oratorio depicts and celebrates the creation of the world as described in the biblical Book of Genesis and in Paradise Lost.
Haydn was inspired to write a large oratorio during his visits to England in 1791-1792 and 1794-1795, when he heard oratorios of Handel performed by large forces. Israel in Egypt is believed to have been one of these. It is likely that Haydn wanted to try to achieve results of comparable weight, using the musical language of the mature classical style.
The work on the oratorio lasted from October 1796 to April 1798. It was also a profound act of faith for this deeply religious man, who appended the words "Praise to God" at the end of every completed composition. He later remarked, "I was never so devout as when I was at work on The Creation; I fell on my knees each day and begged God to give me the strength to finish the work." Haydn composed much of the work while at his residence in the Mariahilf suburb of Vienna, which is now the Haydnhaus. It was the longest time he had ever spent on a single composition. Explaining this, he wrote, "I spent much time over it because I expect it to last for a long time." In fact, he worked on the project to the point of exhaustion, and collapsed into a period of illness after conducting its premiere performance.
In 1801, Haydn reused some ideas from this oratorio for the Schöpfungsmesse.
Haydn's original autograph score has been lost since 1803. A Viennese published score dated 1800 forms the basis of most performances today. The 'most authentic' Tonkünstler-Societat score of 1799, with notes in the composer's hand, can be found at the Vienna State Library. There are various other copyist scores such as the Estate, as well as hybrid editions prepared by scholars during the last two centuries.
The text of The Creation has a long history. The three sources are Genesis, the Biblical book of Psalms, and John Milton's Genesis epic Paradise Lost. In 1795, when Haydn was leaving England, the impresario Johann Peter Salomon (1745-1815) who had arranged his concerts there handed him a new poem entitled The Creation of the World. This original had been offered to Handel, but the old master had not worked on it, as its wordiness meant that it would have been 4 hours in length when set to music. The libretto was probably passed on to Salomon by Thomas Linley Sr. (1733-1795), a Drury Lane oratorio concert director. Linley (sometimes called Lidley or Liddel) himself could have written this original English libretto, but scholarship by Edward Olleson, A. Peter Brown (who prepared a particularly fine "authentic" score) and H. C. Robbins Landon, tells us that the original writer remains anonymous.
When Haydn returned to Vienna, he turned this libretto over to Baron van Swieten. The Baron led a multifaceted career as a diplomat, librarian in charge of the imperial library, amateur musician, and generous patron of music and the arts. He is largely responsible for recasting the English libretto of The Creation in a German translation (Die Schöpfung) that Haydn could use to compose. He also made suggestions to Haydn regarding the setting of individual numbers. The work was published bilingually (1800) and is still performed in both languages today. Haydn himself preferred for the English translation to be used when the work was performed for English-speaking audiences.
Van Swieten was evidently not a fully fluent speaker of English, and the metrically-matched English version of the libretto has given rise to criticism and various attempts at improvement. Indeed, the English version is sufficiently awkward that the work is sometimes performed in German even in English-speaking countries. One passage describing the freshly-minted Adams forehead ended up, The large and arched front sublime/of wisdom deep declares the seat. The discussion below quotes the German text as representing van Swieten's best efforts, with fairly literal renderings of the German into English. -

Filmed in Southern Utah's Color Country--in locations such as Zion National Park, Snow Canyon State Park, and Kolob Mountain--this short video captures the unique desert landscape of our area. This film also features the Yamaha Disklavier, which we placed in a scenic meadow on Kolob Mountain at sunset. Both the song and video are by Shaye Scott of The Piano Guys. If you enjoy the music, please show your support by downloading the song, "Desert Symphony," on iTunes. -
