The progress of insight is a set of psychological "stages" experienced in a curiously consistent sequence by those who practice insight meditation. Some of these stages are pleasant, while others are unpleasant. Some stages feel intensely trippy, others feel actively mundane. Some can persist for years, others last only moments. Some are easy to describe, while others are so esoteric that their central character has yet to be more than impressionistically gestured at. Some transitions are one-way. Some effects are permanent.
Progressing through the stages of insight is quite difficult, but it's so simple that it can be done without realizing it. As civilization gets faster and more complicated, a more powerful vocabulary is required to maintain one's grip on reality, and increasingly precise and sensitive attention is required to wield that vocabulary skillfully.
