Longarm Quilting- How to Load quilt with magnets

Let me show you how I save time loading my quilt onto my longarm frame with magnets! I started using this technique about 2 years ago and have never gone back to zippers or pinning. I only load the quilt backing onto two rollers with magnets and then the batting and quilt top are floated. Meaning, I don't roll my quilt top on any roller.

When I purchased my longarm setup I got it with the zippered leaders that go taped on to the electrical conduit poles. After I discovered the magnet method I considered removing the zippered leaders but figure the tap would leave them too gummy and I didn't want to go through the hassle of cleaning them up or buying new poles so, I just left them as is and I place the magnets over all the layers of fabric- zippered leaders and quilt backing with no real problems. I show you how I do just that in this video as well.

The magnets are not only great for loading the quilt backing but for keeping a little allen wrench, seam ripper, small pair of scissors, etc. stuck on the machine for easy access while quilting.

    Longarm Quilting- Basting your quilt

In this video I show you how I baste my quilt tops on my longarm frame. This video is Part 2 in a tutorial series of how to load your quilts on a longarm frame. For part 1 on loading the quilt click here:http://youtu.be/28pS90e2-jI

I no longer use side clamps when loading or basting my quilts on the longarming frame. I just find that I don't need it because I roll my rollers until my quilt backing is pretty tight but not too taut. I also use straight pins to help keep the quilt top in place as I baste. I like to start my basting stitches at the top center of my quilt top and stitch it down to one edge. Then I return to the center and baste in the other direction. I also baste down the vertical sides as far as I can go.

Longarm Machine Quilting- Loading your quilt

    by TheCraftyGemini 42,888 views

In this video I cover the basics of loading your quilt onto your frame. The setup I use is the Stretch Frame and Voyager 17 (V17) by Hinterberg.

I specifically cover how to pin your backing, how to layer your batting and quilt top, how to baste your quilt sandwich together. The loading method I prefer is the "floating" method where the batting and the quilt top are floating atop the backing fabric. I show you how I load my layers on my frame.
