Men In Black: Clevver U Lesson 9!

http://Twitter.com/ClevverU - Follow Us!
Welcome to clevver u! Today we embark on a new mission, with men in black releasing, we decided to give a lil background on the men in black! Ready? Let's get started!
Men In Black have been associated with aliens since way back in the 1940's when the first modern UFO sightings began. Increased reports of strange men wearing black suits grew throughout the 1950's and 60's. Most believe these men to be members of a secret government agency sent to thwart the existence of aliens, while other believe these "Men In Black" could in fact be aliens themselves.
The Men In Black as we have grown to love started off as a comic book series created and written by Lowell Cunningham first published in 1990. These Men In Black not only took on aliens, but also dealt with baddies like demons and mutants. They took their jobs seriously and weren't above killing to keep their secrets from the populace.
The top-secret government agency responsible for monitoring and policing paranormal life forms on Earth got a bit of a facelift when it hit movie screens in 1997. They traded in lethal force for their patented Neuralizer, a pen-size device that wipes the memories of those that encounter either them or aliens, and is also used to wipe the memories of former agents when they retire. The Neuralizer has become so popular, it was ranked number 4 on a list of film inventions that people wished were real.
So who are these Men In Black? Agent K, played by Tommy Lee Jones is a veteran of the agency. Little is known about his early life, but has been with the agency since his 20's. His real name is Kevin Brown and he grew up the son of a drill Sargent. After his partner retires, Kay recruits a young, NYPD officer named James Darrell Edwards III to not only take the place as his new partner, but also be Kay's replacement.
That new partner is found in Agent J, played by Will Smith. Jay brings a youthful, energetic and often unorthodox approach to the MIB organization. After Kay retires, Jay has trouble training a new partner and eventually recruits Kay back to MIB to take down the aliens and restore peace to the universe. In the third installment of the franchise, Jay must travel back in time to save a young Kay, played by Josh Brolin, from being murdered. His journey will lead him to unknown secrets of the universe that could be the key to saving the future of humankind.
So there you have it, everything you need to know about Men In Black. Your homework assignment is to go see Men In Black 3 and report your findings below in the comments section. Until next time, I'm professor Carrier and we'll see you in class. -

http://Twitter.com/ClevverU - Follow Us!
Welcome back to clevver u! This week we will learn everything you need to know about The Amazing Spiderman, starting with LIZARD!!! Get out your notepads and lets get started!!!
Dr. Curtis "Curt" Connors aka the lizard made his first appearance in 1963 in The Amazing Spider-Man #6 and quickly became one of Spider-Man's most popular archenemies. There have been several versions of Connors including that of a surgeon in the U.S. Army, a Columbia University physics professor and a geneticist working with Peter Parker's father, Richard Parker at Oscorp Industries.
No matter what the occupation, Connors has always been obsessed with one thing and that's reptilian regeneration in order to find a way to regrow his amputated arm. Like many of Spider-Man's foes, Connors is not an evil person by nature, but becomes evil through circumstances. In Connors case, those circumstances are the serum he creates to regrow his arm ultimately turning him into a giant lizard.
A few of lizards fancy attributes that make him a villain not to be reckoned with include a six-and-a-half-foot long tail that can destroy anything in its path, even concrete! He possesses superhuman strength and speed and can even go toe-to-toe against Spider-Man in wall climbing skills with the help of razor sharp claws. His tough, scaly skin is virtually impervious to most weapons, but if for some reason he is injured, he has the ability to heal at a rapid rate, making him invincible and nearly impossible to kill. In addition to all those traits, the lizard also can use telepathic power that allow him to communicate and command reptiles.
Most renditions of Lizard portray him as very animalistic in nature with a long snout. In Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man, the Lizard appears more like a human/lizard hybrid with his eyes, nose and mouth retaining much more human-like features.
Though The Amazing Spider-Man marks the first appearance of Lizard on the big screen, this is not the first appearance of Dr. Connors. Connors was mentioned in Sam Raimi's 2002 version of Spider-Man and appeared as Peter Parker's quantum mechanics professor in Spider-Man 2 and the person Parker goes to for advice on the Symbiote in Spider-Man 3. Actor Dylan Baker played Connors in both films and would have most likely played the main villain had Raimi and his cast returned for Spider-Man 4.
We will all finally get to see the lizard battle Spider-Man on the big screen when The Amazing Spider-Man hits theaters July 3rd.
Thanks for attending class, and I hope you took notes, a quiz is on the way!!! we will see you next time! -

Spider-Man: Clevver U Lesson 13!

http://Twitter.com/ClevverU - Follow Us!
Hello and welcome back to clevver u! We are continuing our lesson on the amazing spider man and today we learn about the guy that this is all about, peter parker, aka spiderman!
The character of Peter Parker/Spider-Man first appeared in 1962 in Amazing Fantasy #15. Creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko were inspired by The Spider pulp hero from the 1930's and wanted to create a teenage superhero. Despite a surge in teens reading comic books, the demo tended to be relegated to sidekicks in comics up to that point.
As a child, Peter Parker was orphaned when his parents were killed in an airplane crash. He then went to live with his uncle and aunt, Ben and May Parker, who raise him in Forest Hills, New York.
Peter was SUPER SMART and became a stand out in school for his genius. However, his shyness and love for scholastics made him a total social outcast.
At 15, Peter is bitten by an irradiated spider which empowers him with superhuman strength, reflexes and agility (similar to that of a spider) and the ability to cling to almost any surface. He also possesses a sort of sixth sense, known as "Spider-Sense" that warns him of danger. His spider-powers also allow him to heal quickly, though he is not invulnerable and can be injured or even killed.
Spidey uses web-shooters which are twin devices worn on his wrists which can shoot thin strands of a special "web fluid." Parker, possessing a genius level intellect, develops the Web-Shooters himself and uses them not only to traverse the skyscrapers of New York, but also uses them to as offensive and defensive tools to take down enemies. In alternate versions of the story, including Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, Peter uses organic webbing that shoots from his wrists - another result of the spider bite.
Peter's dedication to fighting crime stems from the many tragedies in his life. From the death of his parents at such a young age, to the guilt he feels for his role in the death of his Uncle Ben and also of that of his first love, Gwen Stacy.
One thing that makes Spider-Man different from most other superhero's and is perhaps the reason so many fans relate to him is the fact that beyond having superpowers, Peter is a normal person with normal problems. He's not a billionaire playboy, so he often must work. In addition to being a high school and college student, Peter has worked as a teacher and scientific researcher. However he is most well known as a freelance photographer working for the Daily Bugle. He uses his ability to get the best shots of Spider-Man to earn money and also portray his alter-ego in a positive light.
The first live-action portrayal of Spider-Man appeared in the 1978 television series starring Nicholas Hammond as Peter Parker. Peter Parker was later played by Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi's trilogy and will be played by Andrew Garfield in Marc Webb's new franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man.
SO thereya have it! What you need to know about peter parker! Hope you took notes! See ya next time! -

Batman: Clevver U Lesson 14!

Hello students, I'm your substitute teacher for today, Professor Miriam Isa and it may be summer, but classes at Clevver U are just getting started and this week's lesson is all about The Dark Knight. One of the most popular comic book characters of all time is finally getting his due, so take your seats, grab your pens and papers and don't forget to take notes, because you never know when there might be a pop quiz. Let's get started on our lesson all about Bruce Wayne, aka Batman.
Batman was created by Bob Kane & Bill Finger and made his first appearance in May 1939 in Detective Comics #27. He was first know as "The Bat-Man" and has also taken on the moniker of The Caped Crusader, The World's Greatest Detective and of course The Dark Knight.
Inspired by the huge success of Superman, Batman's creation was highly influenced by characters like The Phantom, The Shadow and Sherlock Holmes. Like The Phantom and The Shadow, Batman originally carried a gun and occasionally killed criminals with little remorse, but soon adopted a "no kill" policy, which is contributed to the eventual origin of Batman which happens as a result of Bruce Wayne's parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne's being murdered right in front of him at the hands of a criminal when Bruce was as a child.
Unlike many superheroes, Bruce Wayne possesses no super powers and becomes Batman using his intelligence and great wealth to create (or have someone else create) powerful weapons and vehicles that he uses to fight crime. He also uses genius level detective skills to take down criminals. His skills are so strong that he even was able to take down his much more powerful Justice League allies at one point, including the powerful Superman. In addition to his intelligence and detective skills, Bruce Wayne is also a skilled martial artist, master of several disciplines and uses his physical prowess and his Batman persona to instill fear in the hearts of his foes.
Some of the weapons in Batman's arsenal include the batsuit which is constructed of bulletproof material, protecting him from small gunfire as well as insulation against electricity, fire and blunt weapon attacks. Batman's cape is also constructed of bulletproof fabric and is used as protection as well as a vehicle for gliding in some incarnations. His cowl, in addition to giving him his signature bat-like appearance, also is enhanced with special electronics that give Batman infrared, night and ultraviolet vision as well as some protection from gunfire and concussive blows. Of course none of these compare to his most powerful weapon, his utility belt. An all-inclusive accessory that contains almost everything Batman may need to take down the toughest enemies including a grapple gun for quick vertical escapes, the multi-purpose batarang, smoke bombs, lockpicks and even a voice activated signaling device to send the Batmobile right to him. -

Bane: Clevver U Lesson 15!

http://Twitter.com/ClevverU - Follow Us!
Hello class, I'm Professor Vivian Valadez and today we're continuing our course on The Dark Knight with a lesson on Batman's The Dark Knight Rises nemesis, the powerful Bane. So take your seats, grab your notebooks and let's get started!
Bane made his first appearance in 1993 in the story "Vengeance of Bane", which helped lay the groundwork for the fan favorite "Knightfall" story arc where he becomes known as "The Man who Broke the Bat". Bane was created by writers Chuck Dixon and Doug Moench and artist Graham Nolan as a "dark mirror" to the 1930's and 40's pulp hero Doc Savage and the character was also highly influenced by the story of Edmond Dantes in The Count of Monte Cristo.
Bane spends his childhood and young adult life as a prisoner on a small Caribbean island, serving the life sentence of his father. He learns to defend himself quickly and commits his first murder at age eight when he stabs a fellow inmate using a knife he conceals in his teddy pair named "Osito". Clearly, Bane is not someone to mess with.
Bane spends his time not only building up his body, but also exercises his mind reading every book he can get his hands on. Despite his muscular facade and his portrayal in some iterations, Bane is not just brawn. He possesses genius-level intellect, a photographic memory, excels in several scientific areas and speaks several languages fluently. He is a master in multiple martial arts disciplines, including some he devised himself and rivals Batman in the art of escape and infiltration. Though not bulletproof, he has been known to reflect bullets and is highly resistant to attacks from blunt weapons.
It's important to note that Bane does not possess any natural superhuman abilities, but is at peak physical condition for a normal human. While in prison, he is forced to become a test subject of an experimental drug known as Venom that enhances his strength, speed and durability to superhuman levels. Under the influence of Venom, Bane is virtually unstoppable, but the drug itself is his greatest weakness. Venom is highly addictive and he must continuously take the drug in order to avoid sever, debilitating side-effects. In the comics, the drugs are fed directly into his brain through the tubes in the luchador mask he wears. In Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, the Venom drug is replaced with a pain relieving narcotic that is administered through an elaborate breathing mask.
As a youth, Bane is haunted by nightmares of a demon bat and when a fellow inmate from Gotham City tells him about the escapades of Batman, Bane decides his destiny lies in Gotham City. He busts out of jail and makes his way to Gotham to confront Batman. He uses his intellect to deduce that Bruce Wayne and Batman are one and the same and decides to bust out the criminals of Arkham Asylum in order to force Batman into consuming all his energy on hunting down the criminals and returning them to prison. Bruce Wayne returns to Wayne Manor after months of trying to capture the vicious criminals of Gotham where he is confronted by Bane. Exhausted after his ordeal, Batman is no match against Bane and Bane breaks Batman's back, leaving him a paraplegic - causing him to be broken not only physically, but mentally as well.
Bane is later defeated by Azrael, Batman's replacement while injured, but eventually recovers from his addiction to Venom and at one point even joins forces with Batman in order to stop Bane's father, King Snake from unleashing a deadly weapon.
Despite the complex nature of Bane, he is often portrayed as a big, dumb oaf as in 1997's Batman & Robin where he is simply the mute bodyguard to Uma Thurman's Poison Ivy. Despite some fans objections to actor Tom Hardy's casting and portrayal of Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, Nolan's choice in including Bane as the main villain for the final film gives Batman a formidable opponent to go head-to-head against both physically and mentally.
So there you have it, everything you need to know about Bane to prepare you for The Dark Knight Rises. Your homework assignment is to see The Dark Knight Rises and report back your theories on Bane and Tom Hardy's portrayal in the comments below. Until next time, I'm your professor Vivian Valadez, class dismissed! -

Pupils, please take your seats! I'm Professor Dana Ward, here to help you swim in a sea of superhero fanatics who can tell you off the top of their heads what Daredevil's original costume was made of (the answer? His father's boxing robe). Today's lecture will be on the topic of Catwoman, one of the most mysterious and iconic women of the DC mythos -- and believe me, there's a lot more to her than just a leather cat-suit! Since her introduction in 1940's Batman #1, Catwoman has appeared in many different incarnations, but her character is always defined by her moral ambiguity and thieving ways. Let's start with the basics, shall we?
Catwoman was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, and originally intended as a foil and love interest for Batman. First introduced as "the Cat," the character is SO mysterious that no two writers can seem to agree on her origins, but she is most commonly portrayed as Selina Kyle, an orphan with a troubled past. She spent her childhood alternating between the orphanage and the streets, even doing a stint in juvenile hall for petty thievery. Depending on who you ask, a young adult Selina may have joined a gang of thieves, engaged in prostitution, or become a dominatrix to get by, and while everyone agrees she was trained in martial arts and developed a taste for cat-burglary, there are several explanations for how that went down. Basically, you just never know with this particular lady.
So one way or another Selina became an ass-kicking thief-for-hire. Her weapons? The famous bull-whip, a cat o' nine tails, knockout gas, restraints, the odd pistol here and there, and my personal favorite, a vehicle dubbed the "Cat-illac." Her costume? On first appearing the character wore no disguise at all, but soon began donning a cat mask during her robberies, and eventually adopted the classic costume, which consists of a purple dress, green cape, and mask with ears. This evolved into a green cat-suit in the 70s, and by the 90s she settled on the purple or black cat-suit that we are now most familiar with.
Throughout her 70+ year history, Catwoman continuously treads the line between hero and villain. She originally took up cat-burglary for the thrill of getting away with it and has been known to partner up with the likes of the Joker, among other paragons of evil. However, she abhors killing and eventually settles into a Robin Hood-style of thievery, occasionally even reinventing herself as a crime fighter alongside the likes of Batman and the Justice League. Speaking of Batman, Selina Kyle is often described as Bruce Wayne's one true love, and the two share an on-again off-again romance. They even get married during one of Selina's more heroic periods and have a child, named Helena Kyle or Helena Wayne, who grows up to be another super-badass, the Huntress, after both her parents are killed.
For as many different origin stories there are for Catwoman, there's just about as many actresses who have played her on-screen. Actress Julie Newmar was the first to don the cat-suit in the original 1966 television series starring Adam West. Former Miss America Lee Meriwether took over the role for the big screen version of the series while Eartha Kitt made the part all her own for the remaining two seasons. Michelle Pfeiffer famously took on the role of Selina Kyle aka Catwoman in Tim Burton's 1992 sequel Batman Returns and Halle Berry played Catwoman in the 2004 standalone film, but was not Selina Kyle, but instead Patience Phillips, a character created specifically for the film. The newest Catwoman to grace the screens is Anne Hathaway, once again as Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises.
Whether friend or foe, Catwoman has solidified her place as one of the most iconic comic book characters of all time and can you imagine where Batman would be without her? So there's everything you need to know about our favorite Feline Fatale. Your homework for tonight will be visiting the comments section below, as there is sure to be an interesting discussion of Catwoman among some of our more advanced students. Until next time, I'm Professor Dana Ward, class dismissed! -

Welcome back, class. You're probably familiar with DC's Justice League and of course Marvel's The Avengers which we previously covered, but you may not be as familiar with another group of heroes known as the Guardians of the Galaxy. Today we're here to bring you up to speed and get you ready for Marvel's upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie set to hit theaters August 1st, 2014. So grab your pencils and silence those cell phones and prepare to get schooled!
There are actually two teams that have gone by the name "Guardians of the Galaxy". Though the upcoming movie will focus on the newest incarnation, it's only fair that we start our lesson at the beginning.
The original Guardians of the Galaxy was created by Arnold Drake and Gene Colan and made their first appearance in January 1969 in issue #18 of Marvel Super-Heroes. The Guardians originate from the 31st Century in an alternate timeline known as Earth-691. In this timeline, mankind has colonized the solar system by genetically engineering individuals in order for them to survive the various environments of the different planets. The planets are invaded by the evil alien race known as the Badoon in 3007 AD and most of humanity is killed or thrown into slavery. The Guardians are formed by a group of survivors determined to stop the Badoon's tyranny.
The original team included Major Vance Astro, a mutant and astronaut from the 20th century who is sent on a mission to explore Alpha Centauri. Placed in statis for the mission, he awakens to find himself in the 31st century. Other founding members include Charlie-27, a human engineered with a large, powerful body in order to survive the intense gravity of Jupiter; Martinex, a scientist from Pluto with the ability to shoot heat and cold blasts from his hands; and Yondu, a Centaurian that Vance teams with when the Badoon attack his planet. Additional members that have joined the team include Aleta Ogord, Firelord, Nikki, Replica, Starhawk, Talon and Yellowjacket.
The original Guardians spent most of their comic book life making appearances in other heroe's comics and teaming with the likes of Captain America, Thor, Thing and The Avengers, both in their own timeline and in the 20th and 21st century. The Guardians finally got their own series in 1990 with a 62 issue series.
Other than a limited spin-off series called Galactic Guardians in 1994, the Guardians were pretty much MIA until a new Guardian team was formed in 2008. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning formed the team using existing characters within the Earth-616 universe. The team is formed by Star-Lord, aka Peter Quill, a human/alien hybrid who sets out to take a proactive role in defending the universe from threats. He recruits fellow cosmic heroes Adam Warlock, an artificially created human with the superhuman strength, speed and the ability to fly and manipulate cosmic energy; Drax the Destroyer, a dead saxophonist resurrected and transformed into a superhuman warrior in order to destroy the evil Thanos; Gamora, the adopted daughter of Thanos; Groot, a giant tree creature with the power to manipulate trees and Rocket Raccoon, a...you guessed it...a raccoon who is an expert tactician and marksman with a knack for heavy weapons. Other members include the powerful Phyla-Vell, martial arts master Mantis and soon Iron Man himself, Tony Stark. The team also finds original member Vance Astro encased in ice (sound familiar?) who joins the team as "Major Victory" after finding and utilizing Captain America's shield. It is Vance who inspires the new team to take on the name "Guardians of the Galaxy".
Though the Guardians take on various cosmic villains, they are most known for taking on one of the biggest baddies of them all, Thanos. Arguably one of the most powerful villains in the Marvel Universe and a major obstacle for the Guardians. So much so, they must recruit The Avengers to help them battle the Mad Titan.
So there you have it, a history of the Guardians of the Galaxy. I hope you took good notes, because we're just getting started. Be sure you're enrolled in Clevver U as we delve deeper into the individual characters that make up the Guardians team. Until then, I'm Professor Aja Dang saying class dismissed. -
